I would have to assume that the Western phrases, "Men are pigs," and, "He was a total pig," probably originate from Circe turning some portion of Odysseus's men into pigs during the Odyssey.

Also the generally negative perception of pigs as ugly, stupid and generally disgusting and even violent creatures; stereotypes also heavily associated with men. It's totally false since pigs can actually be cute, have comparable intelligence to dogs, and are fairly clean and docile creatures when looked after as pets, but the common perception of pigs mostly stems from wild pigs and pigs kept as livestock. Because it's a lot easier to kill something and turn it into bacon to eat when you think of it as something negative. As for the association with men? No, that's accurate. And I say this as a man. We are pigs. Hell, some people even think we taste like pigs.

Fun fact: The Journey to the West is actually relatively modern despite being very deeply rooted in the eastern media now days. The novel was released somewhere around late 16th century meaning it's contemporary to William Shakespeare's work.

So i looked it up, apparently the whole deal with the demon and the princess being reincarnations of heavenly spirits that were in love in heaven at the same time as the princess being a kidnapping victim makes a lot more sense in context. Apparently, when that female heavenly spirit reincarnated into human form, her memories got a bit... Lost. And the demon did not take that very well leading to him kidnapping the princess who happened to be the reincarnation of that heavenly spirit. So reincarnation amnesia is the reason why the story was so weird there with the princess being simultaneously a kidnapping victim and somehow also the incarnation of a heavenly spirit that just so happened to be genuinely in love with the demon when he was also a heavenly spirit.

It's not so much an anime plot twist, but more a psychological observation of what happens when one feels LOST. When someone feels betrayed and doesn't know what to do. They fall into depression, they might lash out in rage at the slightest thing because it 'feels better' when they cut loose, and they might indulge themselves in other things to make themselves happy to cover up the hurt or try and fill that hole. You don't need to look at anime and see that. You can see that with real people. Someone who gets fired from a job they've been at for a long time goes home in a daze, thinking only 'how did this happen?'. They get home, and notice their neighbor left a hose out and it's partially on their property, and get irrationally angry, yelling and throwing stuff. Maybe they decide 'screw it. I'm unemployed. I'm gonna go get wasted' and go to the bar and spend WAY too much there because... it makes them feel better. Not normal... but it's distracting them from that yawning hole in their life and purpose. For now.

The demon didn't know that the dragon who attacked him was Tripitaka's horse, so turning back into horse form and hiding out in the stable was the safest option once he was too injured to fight any more. Also, the dragon acts like a normal horse most of the time because he's under orders from Kuan Yin to, well, act as Tripitaka's horse. He's not allowed to make the journey too easy for the same reason that Monkey isn't supposed to just jump Tripitaka straight to the monastery even though he can jump to the ends of the universe. I would say the dragon horse is more useful than Pigsy. For one thing, he is literally carrying Tripitaka, and we all know that if Tripitaka were walking the journey would take three times longer than it already does. Also, Pigsy was totally ready to bail, and the only reason he went to go find Monkey is because the dragon horse made him do it. The dragon horse doesn't actually do much, but he's really the most steadily reliable of Tripitaka's disciples. Pigsy's a lot more active, but he also far more likely to screw things up out of laziness or ego.

the horse/dragon changed into a horse cause nobody would think twice about a horse being in the stables, so then it could heal off the injury it got from the demon ya know ya sometimes say you're slow on the uptake.....and you're usually correct also the problem with Sun Wukong isnt that people bother him, its that he gets bored real easy and goes off to find fun, which usually means killing and or destroying a LOT of stuff

I love when the Red's video got interupted by a cottonelle comercial. And at the perfect place, too. I'm not going to lie, Pigsy was kind of unlikable in this chapter. Xuanzang kind of was too, but at least he learned his lesson hard in the end. Well, kind of. I was interesting to hear Red talk about how Sun Wu Kong represents the mind in this scenario. And I love that the Dragon finally sort of did something.

Fr she was the main villain of the Lego Monkie Kid for 3 seasons. I think the appeal of her is she isn’t physically strong and she outsmarts the people around her or psychologically manipulates them, which makes for a interesting foe for someone like Sun who is also very clever and provides him with obstacles he can’t just punch. But needs to match whits with. Also as someone who is reading the book’s currently, she’s only alive for like, 3 pages at most before he kills her. However is responsible for a “divorce arc” which is the REASON Wolf Star ever even stood a chance, because no monkey. The drama is genuinely compelling. I think that’s why she gets a lot of special attention in adaptations. And it’s also when Pigsy learns to appreciate just what Wukong left behind, flower fruit mountain is a paradise where Wukong’s every earthly desire is met, he could sit back and have a blissful eternity, loved and adored by his monkeys with needing to worry. But for book Wukong he’s trying to fill a hole inside of him. He wants enlightenment and to make himself whole. And Pigsy is in awe of what Wukong was willing to leave behind in the first place. Pigsy misses home a lot in the book but Monkey never once complains. Because Wukong GENUINELY wants to be a better person and reach enlightenment. Any homesickness he feels is buried under his desire to go to the west, fulfill his life debt to Tripitaka and reach enlightenment. Pigsy and Wukong fight like a cat and dog for 95% of the book, and Pigsy knows he’s the one to blame for convincing Tripitaka to throw him out. Wukong doesn’t tell pigsy ANY of this but he recognizes it and is filled Pigsy with a determination to mend the bond between Wukong and Tripitaka, no mater what. So pigsy lies and says the monster called him a “skinny, unstable, stable boy.” It’s honestly one of my favourite moments in the book. It’s funny, heart warming and it uses one character to explore another. It’s delightful and very compelling. Wukong is the funny sassy powerhouse but there is more to him under the quips and prank wars. Red isn’t kidding when she says this book is really good.

Red didn't cover it, but Tripitaka dying DID cross Monkey's mind to escape the curse. That train of thought doesn't last very long, though, because Tripitaka activates the spell and points out that Guanyin could activate it too.

I'm not sure what 百花羞 means in the original novel. But based on my knowledge of Mandarin and Chinese culture, it can be translated into "she is so pretty that make many or all of flowers feel shame."

It _is_ curious that a lot of characters based on Sun Wukong tend to be on the,,, less intelligent side of the spectrum, to put it nicely. Because while Wukong is impulsive, he is the Intelligent Stone Monkey for a reason; he's actually _incredibly_ clever and a sponge for knowledge.

It might interest you that the main cast of the original Dragon Ball are straight up based on the main cast here. Not just Sun Wukong. The monk is Bulma, Sandy is Yamcha, Pigsy is Oolong. I can only assume the dragon is Shenron since it is so rare.

Also, Red brings up the book's age because early novels are actually very weird structure-wise for us modern readers *looks at Persian Letters*, not to mention the old epics that were passed down orally.

To Aurier and anyone interested, there are actually abridged translations of Journey to the West that make for an easier read. One that I read and recommend is Monkey King by Julia Lovell. The style of writing is crafted to suit a modern audience more so for those that don't feel like reading the 2000 pages of the original (Monkey King is only about 300+ pages long), I recommend that^^

But if you're wanting the audiobook, I recommend the Arthur Waley translation (which doesn't show up in search results for JttW since it goes by "Monkey"). The narrator for the Julia Lovell translation is not good, while Monkey has Kenneth Williams who is a really talented actor and narrator.

And Tripitaka's commonly used name in real life, Xuanzang Sanzang, is read as Genjō Sanzō in Japanese. Kinda interesting that 奘 and 蔵 rhyme in both Mandarin and Japanese. (Xuanzang is the name he took when he became a monk, Sanzang is a byname that often gets used with his monk name; iirc, in JttW, the fictional Xuanzang is called Tang Sanzang, or Tō Sanzō in Japanese)

Okay to say two things in the horses defense (from what I’ve seen of him from OSP) 1. While he might not have as many uses as Pigsy, Pigsy is also actively detrimental to the group at times while the horse isn’t. Horse won’t save the day but he won’t ruin it either. 2. Pigsy might have been the one to get Monkey but he only did it because Horse forced him to. If it wasn’t for the Horse Pigsy would have quit here and the Journey would have been finished.

Honestly, for Blue, a lot of the History Hijinks are good. Also, Red's Pride Tales and Blue's History Makers on Sappho will be great when Pride Month Roles around. Stranger in a Strange Land is good for Deep Thoughts with Himeline. And there are some early gems of OSP's history in the Shakespeare videos, while the Animated videos of their streams show the team just hanging out and having fun (plus the line of "My Hubris!"). We're Sorry is good, while the De-Vine series always gets a laugh out of me, though you might need some familiarity with Red's designs for different mythological beings.

Perhaps the metaphor is that after the base urges (Pigsy) lead the enlightenment-seeker (Tripitaka) astray, it leads to the mind (Sun Wukong) having a breakdown. The unthinking follower (Sandy) can do nothing on his own, and honestly the will (horse) can’t either. However, the will CAN get the other parts motivated & get things back on track when the whole thing falls apart.

Honestly in this chapter I really didnt like Pigsy and Tripitaka. Like you keep getting saved by one guy and you dont even attempt to trust him even a little, while Pigsy makes unnecessary problems between them. What annoys me is him using the chant so much on sun wukong. Like if Wukong went on rampages I can understand using it to stop him and talking to him about it later or if Wukong were to attakc him, but if its a life and death situation... Like Tripitaka doesnt do anything if Wukong kills Demons but if its human murderes then its forbidden, which is stupid.

12:11 Wukong is far from a Mary Sue. He's OP, yes, but he often doesn't win fights, and has been injured several times already. A Mary Sue is basically a character that never struggles/never loses.
