People forget how much of a monster Sonny Liston was. Everyone thought he was unbeatable. When they took Ali's heart rate it was through the roof. They almost didn't let him fight. Its like his mind was telling him he wasn't scared but his body knew. Its incredible what he did in the fight though. One of the most impressive performances of all time.

It was great but people underestimated the size difference. Ali was from the new generation of big heavyweights and it only became apparent when they met in the ring Ali was towering over Liston

Still rates as probably the biggest shock in boxing history. Ali/Clay, was this untested "loudmouth" who people thought was nuts, and who needed his mouth closed and shut once and for all. Liston many considered was the most devastating puncher EVER seen by mankind. Liston had enormous reach for a man his size, and he wasn't as slow as people think he was. He also was actually a good fighter. Little did people realize just who was stepping into the ring with Liston that day. The rest is history.
@fubarin88968 жыл бұрын
+babystinky Totally agree with you , but that was Ali at his peak. After he came back from his exile he started to ropeadope and take very serious punches to the body & head. The long period without boxing did not do good to Ali.

Ali was not even at his peak in 1964. The Ali of 66/67 was 10 times fasters and punches a lot harder than the one who fought Listen in 64'. Here was only 22 years Old.
@hassanislam72277 жыл бұрын
randy yankam 70s ali was ali in his prime by far. People say he's the best in the 60s yh bc his most opponents were bums compared to his 70s opponents . They hit harder and in general much better boxers in the 70s . There's hardly any difference between 66/67 ali and 64 ali smh he was considered the best boxer at 66/67 bc his wins at that time . "Ali of 66/67 was 10 times faster and punched alot harder than the one who fought liston in 64" ??? Wtf do u mean by that bs? Shows how much u kno about boxing kmt
@omariblake217 жыл бұрын
Young man, I don't know if you were old enough to watch ali boxe in the 70s. He was not the same boxer after HIS LICENCE was taken and didn't boxe for 3 YEARS son! The Ali that fought Frazier didn't have the reflexes he had in his mid 20s yet took defending champion frazier all the way to the 15th round in 1971. A younger Ali would have finished Frazier alot earlier. He was a lot faster, better head movement and had better stamina than the one who turned up against Smoking Joe. Ask any one who old enough who followed Ali over the years and they'll you. How long does it take to recapture form at high level in combat sport after 3 years without fighting? Think again...

I think that Ali fans might find this an interesting tidbit. According to the book, King of the World, Ali, when still a very young man known as Cassius Clay, made the acquaintance of the famous professional wrestler who went by the name of Gorgeous George. Now, anyone who recalls those days will remember that GG had long golden locks and would make a display of preening himself before getting in the ring, spraying eau de cologne on himself and basically acting totally outrageous. This would get the crowd furious with him - and people would pay money and fill the seats in the arenas, just to yell abuse at GG and scream for him to get his ass kicked, he annoyed them so much with his antics. Young Cassius Clay observed all this and he saw how profitable GG's antics were to building the match. He took his cue from GG who told him, "Always be outrageous!" This was prior to the first Liston fight. So, Ali, a born showman, took GG's advice to heart - he realized that by behaving outrageously, he would get tons of media attention and fill the seats in the arena and build the fight - and also completely disconcert his opponent, in this case, Sonny Liston. So when you hear the young man telling all the world, "I'm so pretty!", and behaving in a generally outrageous manner, bear in mind that is something he picked up from the wrestler Gorgeous George. These were two great showmen of the ring. Of course, Ali was also the greatest fighter of his age - possibly of all time.

Ali actually talks about his meeting with GG in any interview contained in one of the documentaries about him on KZbin. He gives him credit for helping create the Ali public persona.

Ali acted like crazy because he wanted to show Liston that he wasnt afraid of him, cuz everyone had Liston winning the fight, Ali arguably was the best boxer of all times but without a doubt the greatest fighter in getting inside his apponents mind, maybe Liston was a better fighter at the time and he definitely lost the fight outside the ring, his boxing skills were shut down by Ali´s crazy behavior, and words “I’m the champ! I’m ready to rumble! Tell Sonny I’m here! He ain’t no champ! Round eight to prove I’m great! Bring that big ugly bear on.”

The beginning of Ali crafting a mystique that would make him seem unpredictable, crazy, immortal. Frazier, Foreman, Liston, and many others believe he was half insane and found, as he progressed as a boxer, they couldnt help but believe his ranting and bouts of manic self-aggrandizement. He got in their heads before he ever put hands on them.

I've seen the footage many times, but what I like about this clip is the audio. You get to hear the photographers yell things like "Hey Doc, get the hell out of the way of the scale, will ya?" and "Move, Jack!" Jack Nilon was a connected guy, so that took balls.

@rapcritic91 I agree, he works the camera, and it works so good that some people really have a hard time liking him, so they pay to see him, hoping that "finally" he will eat his words. That's one hell of a PR campaign. Especially being undefeated for 10 years. If he were a quiet humble fighter, people would get bored with him, his mouth helps to keep his reign interesting, and keep people paying top dollar to see him fall.

how come Liston doesn't get as much talk around here? He is top 5 heavyweights of all time, was 36-1 when meeting Ali, having beat the previous champ 2 times in less than 4 minutes. He was ducked for more than 4 years when he won it in 1962, and could be the most intimidating fighter there was.

@genericgeorge I saw Howard's commentary and he was right. Liston WAS sharp after getting up from the knockdown because he had plenty of time to recover. I also saw a close up of Liston getting hit with that punch. The punch was solid and Liston definitely looked stunned when fell. That close up footage was in a little known video which I believe was called " The Greatest: It's Official" where Ali was rated against other great champions.

@duprez2 I dont know if you've seen Howard Cosell's post match commentry, but he quite rightly points out that Liston still has reflexes after the knockdown and is trying - however clumsily - to avoid Ali's punches. He's not dazed at all. It was more like a surprise than the force of the punch itself. The punch knocked him off balance. A legit knockdown for sure but no knockout. Liston would have got creamed like the first fight if he had of been seriously trying to win.

Joe Pollino, one of Liston's cornermen, claimed years later that Liston had told him to rub astringent onto his gloves before the fifth round and Liston rubbed the gloves in Clay's face. Other fighters had claimed Liston blinded them in fights.
@jeffmejia35564 жыл бұрын
If you look at Clay’s fights prior to Liston there were shades of what would become the great Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali but Clay looked ordinary and beatable which is why many predicted that Liston would win easily. The weigh in I believe is where Clay won. Look at Liston when Clay is on the scale reaching out toward Liston and yelling at him. You can see Liston visibly swallow hard. Liston wasn’t used to this. Many of his opponents were scared and intimidated by the big man. I had often read about this weigh in but never had seen footage of it. Pretty remarkable. Telling a big strong invincible ex con that he “doesn’t stand a chance” and having people hold him back definitely scared the “bully”. Simple psychology by Clay. No one wants to fight a bully. But if you go up to a bully and tell him that you want to fight him the bully will decline. Well orquestrated by Clay.
