Back in 2000, I restored a '76 Olds 442 identical to this one. The 350 engine was in very poor condition. We located a severe body damaged '73 Olds 98 that had a 455 in it. We rebuilt that engine, put in a W31 cam, dual-plane aluminum intake manifold with a 735 CFM Holley carb. We also rebuilt the turbo 400 transmission. We got a Currie 9" Ford differential, with disc brakes, to replace the Olds 442 stock 10 bolt differential. Final results were a very stout and nice car.

Thanks for bringing another car that many do not remember or have not seen. Oldsmobile was riding high during this period with Cutlass being the number one selling car and in 1977 the Oldsmobile Division broke the 1 million sales mark. Who would have thought back then that Oldsmobile (and Pontiac) would be gone. I was in high school when the muscle car era was quickly going away from 1970 to 1974. As a result these types of cars were underappreciated at the time as they were directly compared to the previous performance cars. At that time I did not appreciate the nice ride and interiors these cars had along with creature comforts the older cars often did not have. Today I have high regards for these cars for what they were during that period and how now they really look good as compared to the cars today.

I had one of these - exactly like this with the black and silver. I looooved that car! Originally from southern Indiana and drove it to NC - it lived with me there for 3 years. When I moved to GA, my boss in NC begged me to sell it to him (he had a Cutlass with the leaky t-tops) so, regrettably, I did. I've wanted it back ever since! I liked how it made me feel just sitting in it. I did have to repair the floorboard over the catalytic converter but the metal shop helped me with that so it was done nicely and cheaply. I changed the carpet out, but I lived in Fayetteville and they had a huge flea market every weekend that sold every car part or accessory ever made. I bought a molded, beautifully made, perfect fitting replacement carpet for around $20!

Him and my oldest brother would go cruising in it about every weekend. My uncle had the Chevy version of this , a Laguna SS in maroon with white stripes. I had to check this out because my parents bought a leftover Cutlass Supreme at the end of summer '76. Much later I bought the 1976 brochure at Carlisle. Ours was a 76 Supreme coupe, Lime metallic with a white top and black and white Interior, which was so common in GM coupes in the 70's. For proof check out Dennis Gage's video of a low mileage 76 Grand Prix. We had the black dash , carpet , buckets and console, too, but with white seats and door panels, headliner and pillar moldings. Good to see that this one is well optioned with swivel buckets, better suspension, power windows, clock, delay wipers and rear defrost. Our green car just had popular options like a/c, automatic, am/fm, plus the sporty touches like the wheels, mirrors, @ bucket seats. The base price of the Supreme was $4900, notice how a/c was 10% of the price! The drive train is the same as ours, 350/q jet with a 2.41 rear. The good new is that on a trip, you could get over 20mpg on the highway even with a catalyst. I never tested mine, wonder if anyone could tell me what a car like this could 0-60 or 1/4 mile?

Hi, Lou! In 1976, the Oldsmobile Cutlass was America's best-selling car. By then, the original 442 concept may have been pretty well watered down, but I think the Colonnade design did lend itself to the 442 package quite well, and Larry has certainly done well to keep this specimen alive for all of its 45 years. And it's great to have something different from the "usual suspects" that you can give the showgoers and everyone out on the road a chance to see. When you have that, who needs trophies?! The car itself IS the trophy! Many thanks to you and Larry for giving us all a good look at it!

Hey big bro Lou! Thank you! Another thoroughly awesome video and review, man. I have never seem one of these with a 442 package. The rear 3 quarter view is sloping and badass. Love the cantered grille. The Rocket Division. Oh God, I miss Olds-I used to see them all over the place when I was a kid, no doubt. God bless the owner-and his military duty-of this beauty and how he has her looking so sweet and new at 45! That swiveling driver seat is so freakin' awesome, Lou! Me? I'd be in the backseat with my cleats off after JV baseball practice (I PROMISE I'm a White Sox fan...maybe...lol) and my tubesocked and ribbon stirruped stocking feet twitchin' outta that driver's side window with myriad girls circa 1985/86/87...;) ;) Wonderful to see an object like this Olds so lovingly looked after and cared for. Gives me joy in this crazy world :). Little bro JV Johnny

After watching this video, it reminds me of the 75 Cutlass S GMO we used to have, the GMO stood for the Gallant Men of Olds, it was a Cutlass S but with a landau roof instead of the triangular windows, it was Sandstone with white swivel bucket seats & a matching white vinyl roof, it also had the Super Stock wheels, ours were argent silver instead of color keyed, a 350 engine was under the hood with automatic transmission, air conditioning & more, my mom bought it at Martin J. Kelly Oldsmobile in Arlington Heights Illinois, the dealer was torn down for housing, it was a great car, but because in 75 with the new catalytic converter, it got the worst gas mileage, the sticker said 15 mpg one city, 20 mpg on the highway, but in reality, it got about 12 mpg, not too impressive, in regards to other cars with the swivel bucket seats, besides the Cutlass, the Monte Carlo was the other, & I believe you could get them in the Chevelle Malibu as well, I wish I had the money to buy that car & restore it, but it would be tricky on account of the sheet metal, but I'd also love to have that gauge cluster in it, that would be a cool upgrade, ah yesterday

Beautiful car. GM must of had factory issue confusions in the 70s. My Mom order a 1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, seriously the only option she ordered was Air Condition. The first trip on the highway a week after delivery the wiring harness melted. The problem was the car was suppose to come with the small block 350 v8 but surprise the car had the 454 V8 turbo jet. Factory error. The wiring harness was set up for the 350 small block hence the melt down. Instead of juat taking the car back and giving what was ordered the Chevrolet rep had the entire wiring harness replaced, which took two Months to change, and a loaner car. So Lou maybe my Mom got someones big block in her bare bones 72 Monte Carlo. That 442 is sweet.

WOW! I bought a 77, which is identical to the 76 other than the grill, back in 1979 with 12,000 miles- $3999. Bummer than it had a 170 HP low compression , smogged down 350 with a bonnyville salt flats 2.41 gear but with a used Holley stree dominator intake, 600 cfm holley, a W31 knockoff cam from comp cams, headers and a 10" converter out of a vega , lastly, a 4.10 gear and that heavy tank actually ran, with L60 Dunlop GT qualifiers, 14.0s at 97 MPH. Slicks? probably could have got a 13.90, maybe 13.80. Had that old ride til 1987. Put a 1966 Ikds 425 in it back in 83 and that thing screamed. Didnt need th e10" converter, an 11" was fine along with a 3.55 gear. I havent seen one of these cars since I went up to the Olds homecoming in Lansing in 2001. Cool first car. Have an 8x10 , black and white, of it the day after the high school drags in 1981 on my wall above my computer.
