Great critique, enjoyed it! What do you mean backlash is only an issue for retractions? Your analysis of patterns from dual-gear extruders is how I found your channel. I thought of you when I saw that large single gear design. Surprised you aren't more impressed by it!
@MihaiDesigns
@MihaiDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
Oh, I am impressed, but as with all things, I can't wait to see it in action. What I mean by backlash is potential play common in geared mechanisms which has an effect when changing the direction of motion, with a bit of a dead zone (for lack of a better term). On X/Y/Z axes this would be a serious issue, but on the E axis, the only time you reverse direction is during retraction, which is not of much relevance. It could impact the seam quality if the backlash would be high, but even on normal geared extruders I haven't found that to be an issue at all.

I like your thoughts. One thing with the load cell for calibration is, that you can't mount another Hotend, and I doubt that prusa engineered a Hotend with the capability of a magnum or dragon. So no especially fast printing possible I guess. I guess they ditch the mmu and go for the multi extruder thingy because you get rid of the quite expensive swipe towers where you often can find more material than in the print itself. But that might block the use of an additional mmu. So you are locked to a max of 5 colors. Palette 3 hast an already built in canvas hub prohibiting it with the use of another octopi or Klipper combo. So only a palette 2 possible at max. I love my palette 2,but I haven't looked if you can still buy it. Many interesting ideas for sure. I want them to succeed and keep the time frame for the first time.
@MihaiDesigns
@MihaiDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
Awesome insight! I haven't done any multi-material printing in a while. Am also wondering if the extruder design choices will prevent it to reach accelerations/speeds now common with CoreXY printers. I also don't like purge towers, reason why I'm working on my hotend swapping device.
@spedi6721
@spedi6721 2 жыл бұрын
@@MihaiDesigns there is a side wipe possibility with a retracting arm (actuated by the carriage) wher the Hotend makes a blop that gets ejected. So even if you have a tall object with centimeters of the same color, you save A LOT on material and printing time. Guess it should be the same time like changing the tool head, but without the issue of oozing while sitting idle. Oozing maybe prevented if the waiting tool heads wait at a lower temp when idling. Like 170 degree maybe. Heat up should be fast enough.

@@ArneSchwarck the guys at Phaetus were nice to send me two Rapido UHF hotends. I did some flow tests and I can extrude 50mm3/s at normal print temperatures. Is that good enough? I think the 3 stepper drivers that you saw on the electronics board are just for the x, y, Z movement. (The Z might be two motors on the same driver again, like you didn't want to see.) I think I recall Josef telling Joel (3DPN) that the stepper driver for the extruder is on that breakout board. I think Josef mentioned that only power and signaling goes between the main board and the extruder. If so, all electrical functions (fans, stepper, heater, and sensors) are driven by the breakout board. Not sure what all the connectors on the displayed add-on board are for unless the tool hanging mechanism needs them. Josef did mention that the connectors are PCI-E, but I don't know if actual PCI-E signaling is used, or if they are just using the physical connectors as a low-cost and easy to source connector part for the BOM. As far as open sourcing, Prusa's track record is to not release the open source design files until after the first batch(es?) ship. This gives Prusa some sales before the cheap knockoffs start using Prusa's design directly.
@MihaiDesigns
@MihaiDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
Yup, could be that they're reusing the Z leveling solution from the MK3S and lightly crash the bed into a couple stoppers to align it with them. Which is OK if they get those stoppers adjustable. For the tools - pretty much CAN bus or similar 2 data wire + 2 power wires - that's why I wonder why you need an expansion board for that. I'm thinking the PCI-E is just the existing connectors but I don't see that running gigabit data transfers anytime soon. It would be great if they made it open source, but indeed cheap clones will pop up very fast if it's open sourced. On the other hand this printer is aimed at small businesses looking for reliability and support, and the clones won't be providing those features but could make for an affordable solution for the tinkerers.

Good belts don't typically stretch when properly applied to application. There are force and acceleration limits. Heavier or faster acceleration will impart more force and willrequire a thicker/wider/use of kevlar/ more cord layers in the belt.

How is your building of the ratrig going?
@MihaiDesigns
@MihaiDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
I found some time to work on it over the last few days. Got a lot of setback with not figuring out the right things to print, or not enough of them, or not oriented the right way. But there's progress 😀

@@MihaiDesigns nice. I have now enclosed mine and it is quiet and have now been able to push it up to 1500mm/s. 2.3 KG of filament move so quickly through the mosquito magnum.

The promised a bunch of stuff like Prusa Connect for the Prusa Mini and it's still not been released. Don't buy it for their fake promises. Just look at what's currently ready.

Mhm the hot end drops out of the heatsink. That is a bit of a dangerous accident waiting to happen, but they can guard that with the second thermistor, so they know the heatsink is actually thermally coupled. The smol belt is probably OK given the printer is large but not gargantuan. I think CoreXY with its super lengthy belts actually works best at small sizes, though it is a bit... involved with just the number of parts, which precludes its use in cheap printers. When it gets scaled up, the belt needs to be scaled up drastically as well; or maybe steel backed belt is needed, which needs larger bearings else it explodes. Pet peeve: belt toothed side running on a smooth idler AGAIN. I don't understand why people do it. Depending on the phase, the tension is uneven. I mean i do understand why some designers do that, they expect the idler bearing to seize up, in which case smooth idler still functions, but i mean, it would be a little embarrassing if the machine this expensive came with garbage bearings. Overall just about the most exciting thing to come out from an actual manufacturer in recent years. Even if it all turns out to be half-working gimmick. Nozzle load cell as probe - how good is it? I mean you're going to have a booger on it; which means you have to probe hot, but you don't want to drive a hot nozzle into PEI. Glass bed?
@MihaiDesigns
@MihaiDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
Very good points and I'm hoping we'll be getting more details from Prusa on them. The nozzle push force into the bed should be very small with a sensitive enough load cell to avoid it start digging into the PEI sheet. I hope 😁
