Most people just don't understand that the tv and video of the day blurred out all the details of the model. These were crucial to making it look good on screen. Modellers know all these tricks of shading. The hull plating. It gives a feeling of size and depth onscreen. This is what most people get wrong in their recreations.

David, that's absolutely true to a degree, for sure, but... Those of us who have studied the model for decades and read the books, primarly the making of Star Trek and Star Trek lives, those of us who have gone to the conventions, we've seen the details for decades. However, there are those in "The Community" that give out false information on purpose and there are those who absolutely cannot admit they are wrong, even when show proof and who will gather an enclave of minions that will back them to the last and that muddy the waters on some of the details, because they are privy to certain information, but not aware of everything. Personally, I know that Matt Jeffries did not want a bunch of greeblies like the Star Wars models and there is minimal "Plating" on this ship. I prefer to build a fresh, pristine Enterprise model, something that looks like it rolled out of dry dock yesterday.

WOW. That was a treat. And I was especially amazed to see for the first time that photo of the broken mirror shards inside Gene's "power balls". I've only seen a blurry image of when 1701 arrived at the Smithsonian with the engine domes missing. :) BIG THUMBS UP.

Loved seeing that! Always thought and had read somewhere long ago that there were mirror shards to reflect the lights onto the frosted domes for it to look great on camera, which it does and is so simple! Awesome!

Man, I'm glad they undid that monstrosity of a "restoration" the Smithsonian did in the 90s. Broke my heart to see the grand old dame tarted up like that.

Seeing the process above, I can understand now why TOS series rarely showed space combat actions because filming it will take a huge efforts.

If i remember when gene Roddenberry asked Matt Jeffries to design his ship for his new project star trek Roddenberry said to Matt no flames and he came up with one of the most iconic star ships in pop culture history

At 308 there' an image of the impulse deck pointing out a slight indent on the underside, the reason is because on the ends there was a piece of cloth I think it was which only covered the ends of the impulse housing.

I bet you were. I'd love to go see it, but the "Restoration" was all of that to me. They got more than one thing wrong and the lights are too bright, makes it look like a model... If you catch my meaning.

@@josephmelvin7508 I do, but there was something surreal about seeing it in person. I couldn’t tell what the Smithsonian got wrong. Probably because I was in fanboy mode.

The Smithsonian model has a small rod-like probe extending from the lower sensor dome, but I don't see it in the detailed photo shown here, was it something that only occasionally appeared?

I've been studying this ship and devouring everything that I could find for decades. I used to work for Trekcore and did thousands of high-res screen captures. I also had tons of data sent to me which included never before seen pictures and information of this ship, including never before published photos and never had I ever seen that on any documentation, never saw it any pictures and never heard it referenced before a few years ago and I called out the guy that photo shopped the image. It all started with a guy named Sasser who is no longer with us and the current "Experts" who are anything but have kept it going, it was actually a personal FU from Sasser to me and a few others. it's not there, it never was there, and Greg Jein did not replicate it on the 6 ft. model.

JJ Abram should be slapped for trashing the original star ship design, he ruined the movie. The main feature of the OST Enterprise that still makes that ship look modern is the rectangle main viewing screen, it's just like the TV's we have now.........

Jar Jar Abrahms and Bad Reboot are an affront to actual Star Trek. It's my opinion that there has not been any real Trek since TUC. Enterprise was a joke and everything in more than 20 years has been trash Trek. Generations was / is an abomination. Hated the way they handled Kirk's death... So much crap with the Trek label on it. The recent stuff isn't Trek, it's idiocy. Paraborg allowed it to happen and now they are broke.

@@josephmelvin7508 I agree 100%, Star Trek went totally to crap after Star Trek 6. I cant stand the NG series or movies..... I still cant make my mind up if I ST-2 or ST-6 the best. I'm still a big fan of the original 60s ST series, but even back then there was some episodes that should've not been made like the one with Spock's Brain was stolen........

Okay now, as far as the nacelles. Are they clear as shown here or do they have an orange tint as displayed at the Smithsonian? Thank you for your answer in advance. -Jim
@josephmelvin7508
@josephmelvin7508 Жыл бұрын
The nacelle domes were frosted clear as I have shown in the screen captures from the Roddenberry vault. The color came from the lights on the inside of the dome and were NOT painted orange. Those that painted them during the restoration were wrong. They were not orange, or crap brown. Even in the scene from Balance of Terror, when the enterprise is playing dead, you can see that with the lights are out, the domes were frosted. There are other instances, but clearly, they are frosted and not painted.

Go to the previous video here and within 9 seconds you can see the screen capture of the dome as frosted before the lights are turned on. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHalhGOZd9qUgZI

@@josephmelvin7508 cheers for that, I’ve often wondered myself, as onscreen they do indeed always have an orange tint, overall. My guess is it was a side effect of the incandescent bulbs used and how they appeared on film, so perhaps the smithsonian tint was a compromise due to the new led lighting not producing the same overall effect in person?
