I commend you for your transparency. I did 1 shoot last year for the first time and it was so bad, I never delivered it🤦🏾‍♂️ But at the same time it taught me so much. I just passed my part 107 this month and picked up the Mavic 3. My goal is to first build up my portfolio then focus on paid gigs.

Good tips. I ran into the same thing after talking to several local real estate agents in my area... nobody wanted “just a drone pilot” - they wanted a complete package offered with photo, video, and drone together.

Hey Ken, nicely done! You were straight forward and to the point, the good, the bad and the ugly. Thanks for this excellent real-life video for those what to look into becoming a Real Estate Camera/Commerical Drone Videographer. Thanks for speaking the truth and opening yourself for others to hopefully learn.

I do farm and rural aerial imagery plus videos and for me the best time is noon or when the sun is high as the goal is to accent the property and shadows just mask the details. Also auto exposure if you use the M2 zoom as a fixed exposure will not work while zooming in. I also try to focus on the idea of making the subject the focus not special effects or music as most realtors do not want a cinematic movie the just want a good representation of the property. Keep in mind this is not residential but rural farm land.

Pick a look and stay with it. Not only do you make a "brand" but there is also the added benefit of a consistent workflow, which means, you can scale up rapidly. I just saw this. It is very great advice. You're a kind, considerate and generous young man!

I know this video is a year hold but it will hold lots of value for ever really. I am really thinking about doing aerial videos with the Autel Evo 2 and the mavic Air 2. I know I will need a nice camera gimbal like one of the ronins or something and eventually a camera and different lenses. Like you said, a phone gimbal could be used at first start-up until you get up to speed. Thanks for telling it straight, that no one is gonna pay you to fly your drone all day. I knew this was true but kinda thought it would be more than 15% aerial and 85% would be walking around inside homes and doing video inside mostly. This is good news to me though as I live up north in Pittsburgh Pa area. I was wondering what a winter would like trying to do this full time. Even if there is snow on the ground some properties would still look great im sure. Studying for my part 107 currently and I wanted to have a look at what to expect. This video really helped. Thanks Ken. As always, stay original. And I used to live down on Marco Island FL for 10 years and I lived in Ft. MCCOY Ocala FL. Also for about 4 years. Go Gators lol

Lot of good advice! Being your own worst critic is tough, but then you push yourself harder to do good work. Now, since you asked for some critiquing, a couple other things you should watch out for... It's "realtor", not "realator", which often makes realtors crazy. It's like "jewelry"; SO many people say "jewlery". A minor thing but gives some people the wrong impression about you. Last but not least... "video-ography" (7:36) ? Videography is one word. ;) Thanks for the great insights!

I've been in the game for 15 years, it's a bit different in Australia, as the vendor is paying for the video, not the agent. My base price is $1500 ... my high end clients are the 4-6 K price range. My advice, don't go in cheap...practice your craft, and when you kick ass...charge for it. But you need to deliver every single time. I shoot RAW as my budget allows for dedicated time for color grading. Amateurs blow out windows, pros make sure not to blow out windows. My number 1 tip , if you want to separate yourself from other...KEEP YOUR VERTICAL LINES STRAIGHT!!! So many people overlook this simple thing, but makes a massive difference. And learn to shoot without a gimbal , it's easy to walk through a house with a gimbal. Keep it as a tool, but don't shoot the entire video on a gimbal. If anyone wants more detailed tips...hit me up.

Excellent. Love the honesty as we've all been there. You can think you're great with the craft, but when you're starting out you can be afraid to put your foot down because you just want the job. My first gig paid me great money, but my client was calling all the shots and micro-managing. I wasn't ablet o get everything the first day (it was a giant apartment building). My contingency plan was to tell them I needed to come back and finish (what I didn't get to finish because the client pulled me off of what I was doing to do an impromptu interview I hadn't planned on). They were all "yeah, yeah" and I'm thinking they were liking my commitment. Nope. I showed up to get the shots I wasn't able to get and they had a fit. That conversation we'd had completely out the window. So, yeah, do NOT let them call your shots. With experience it gets better but that's just it - experience.

Heya again, OB. Good tips. As to dumb stuff on a shoot: Because of the hurried pressure by the groom's father (and 4 different locations for the event) at a looooong wedding shoot one time, I forgot to press the RECORD button on one of my 3 camcorders ... caught it a few minutes later, but too late for an important part of the ceremony. And wouldn't ya know it, my cover camcorder's El Cheapo SD cards went tits up and the footage was totally corrupt. Anyhoo .... awaiting delivery of my Sony a6000 in a couple of days ... and my Parrot Anafi (my 1st drone ever) delivery in a few days after that. Been scouting eBay, etc. (will hit some pawn shops tomorrow) for a 12mm Rokinon 2.0 for the a6000. I do have an active real estate broker license but am tire of fighting that agent path. I do have some video shooting and editing (use Vegas Pro) experience. I say ALL of that to say this: I am going to jump into doing real estate videos as soon as I get up to speed on the Anafi & the a6000. So, I appreciate all of your tips on shooting R. E., and other, videos. Keep 'um comin', chief. . . .. Almost forgot to ask, you my questions: what is your take of delivering the final video to the agents in a Cinematic form: letterbox & grading vs just a video look? . . . Cheers from Jacksonville, Florida ... Chuck : +)

Fo many agents, stills are the core of the presentation. They go on the website, they're used for brochures, on FB, IG, etc. You have to do those well. Aerials are useful only if they add value. The house is on a golf course, on the beach, or mountaintop. A track home with neighbors on four sides is usually not a great candidate. Lastly, videos take up a huge amount of space. A lot of agents just can't use them for that reason, or want them compressed into oblivion. Make sure your agent has room for videos (hundreds of MBs). Many don't An alternative is to publish on KZbin and provide a link. But remember, KZbin compresses them too. One more thing. Don't undercharge if your work is first rate. You'll spend 2-3 hours on location, and 2-4 more in post. You've got $000's tied up in gear. Get paid for it. Good luck.

Dude... You're awesome, thank you for those tips. The smudge I'll definitely be looking for all the time... What about panning with the drone instead of overhead shots for areas that aren't drone ready for overhead, what's your thoughts? Question: I have a Sony a6400, which wide angle lens would you suggest that I grab? I was looking at the Sigma 16mm Contempory along with the Laowa 12mm Zero Distortion (this is full frame which means it would be 18mm on the a6400).
