Should I go to university to become a mountain guide? - Ask a Professional Ep 1
A new Q and A series from Original Outdoors. In this episode Barry from South Wales (possibly Barry FROM Barry?) asks:
"My daughter is 16 and considering her university options.
She loves coming climbing and walking with me and wants to become a mountain guide.
Should she look to go to a university that has an outdoor education degree course?"
Richard Prideaux answers this question based on his experience working in the outdoor training and activity industry in the UK for the past 15yrs, and his complete lack of any university education whatsoever.
Throughout the answer Richard covers subjects such as:
How much does an outdoor instructor earn?
University mountaineering clubs
Injury and self-employment
Making your hobby into your career

This video has been extremely helpful and informative. I plan to start a mountain guiding business full time in Japan this year. My plan is to become a hiking influencer and use the publicity as a leverage. Extremely excited to start my career as mountain guide.

Brilliant video. I'm currently in university, and doing the Mountain Leader on the side. It's on pause with Covid-19 at the moment, but I will be looking to start my Rock Climbing Instructor too when I can. At the minute I'm keeping all my options open. In four years time I will have a lot more experience, a clearer idea on whether I really want to be a Guide (IFMGA) or not, my ML and RCI, and I will also have my college degree and high proficiency in French and German. I was originally looking at outdoor courses, but decided against it. You basically outlined my reasons for that decision in this video. Thanks for the interesting viewpoints.

Bit late to the party on this one, Rich. If I knew what I know now about becoming 100% freelance, I definitely would not have taken that decision in 2015. Plandemic situation has taught me that being freelance in the outdoor industry, for me at least, is just not financially viable. Myself and many others lost thousands of pounds worth of work over-night due to Covid and the inevitable over-reaction. Leaving me destitute if it wasn't for my remaining student loans. You could argue that I should have saved for a rainy day, but I've never earnt enough to be able to. > So now I've been forced back into 'proper' work in order to survive, although said work is yet to start. That said, I will still freelance for the likes of you, Kate/Ross, a couple of others and Go Below, but it will no longer be my main source of income as it's just too risky. And as I'm a F/T student that is also registered self-employed, I have not been able to claim for any help off the Government. > I could have become homeless (for reasons you know about), but I have been very lucky. > I am left wondering how much of the remaining year can be salvaged in light of Covid as far as outdoor work is concerned? If I'm honest, I would prefer to train people in outdoor skills as opposed to guiding them up Wyddfa countless times (I love teaching nav/map reading, for example). So if you're ever in need of anybody mate... > Great video Rich, see you soon :)
