I’m an Uber driver and put the Israeli flag on my dash after Oct7, because I work in a college town, and want the Jewish kids to know my car is a safe space. No one said anything about it until last night, when about 6 people did. One was a young woman who was just in Israel in Sept as part of a trip sponsored by Hillel, to meet Israeli’s and Palestinians. Another lived there as a child and she lost a friend at the Nova music festival. Real people, real lives. (I did similar things for Muslims after 9/11.)

As a younger person, within the demographic that seems to show some kind of strange sympathy for terrorism, I have found it unbelievably reality altering. Almost as if we’ve stepped into an alternate reality in the multiverse. The compassion for Palestinians and the justifiable criticism of aspects of Israeli political action is fair and appropriate. But the demonization of Israel and Jews wholesale is unconscionable and disgusting. I don’t know where we are now or where we’re going. While I believe you are a peacemaker, I feel you perhaps forget there are Israeli's who believe in a greater Israel and view Arabs with distain, at best. Both sides are fractured, not just the Palestinians, I was in Jerusalem during the October 7th attacks and saw this first hand. Some people blaming the dictator and settlers, some calling for Gaza to be wiped out. We dont need one, we need two Nelson Mandela figures to bridge these many divides on both sides. One day, the conflict will be over and muslims and jews will live in peace. The horrible atrocities both sides have commited against each other will need to be forgiven and left in the past.

So...greatly appreciative of your product on the topic of Israeli/Palestinian relations. I have for the past several decades somewhat superficially followed the twists and turns of the conflict, but since Oct 7th, I've tried to dig more deeply. One thing I've noticed, and this could be my own bias coming out, but in reading many articles and watching many videos about the history of the region, I have observed that, by far, material offered by non-Palestinian or allied sources, tends to be more objective and even-handed than Palestinian-allied sources. In other words, taking your own videos as an example, you admit to there being more than one viewpoint in the matter, you admit to your own potential for bias, but most of all you overtly attempt to minimize emotional claims or argument. Whenever evaluating sources of information for important factual content, I look for evidence of objectivity and reason, and avoid product driven by one-sided advocacy and appeals to emotion. Thank you for your efforts!

Thank you, Sir, for sharing with us not only your very valued thoughts on a very difficult matter but also your own personal experience. it sure boggles the mind how many people, like in the commentaries in the Washington Post, are supporting a known terrorist group who, by their own accord, carried out a major massacre and intend to repeat it, if permitted. this said, what it needs esp on the side of the Palestinians, is a minimum of understanding that peace can only be had with at least some good will. and that means shelving one's hatred to give peace a chance. teaching children to hate is certainly the wrong way.

I don't think you're honestly reporting the letters. I've read about 100 in nyt and maybe wapo is different. Of the letters expressing sympathy for suffering Palestinians ...the number praising hamas was .. . 0 actually. Are you giving a rigorous account, in which case wapo readers are Vastly nastier and more anti semitic than nyt readers ? If you are slanting your account, that's seriously Crying wolf and trivializing anti-semitism. When anti-semitism comes knocking it won't look like what you read. However if you are reporting honestly I apologize and I'm freaked out about wapo readers.

I feel that I have done away from this video better enlightened to the nuances of the situation. This is the first time I've finally been able to understand why the settlements are controversial. Your last video helped me to understand why the people in Gaza feel trapped or imprisoned. I don't know what the full solutions are but I think we can only find them through listening deeply and to everyone, even those who feel bitter against us. (I say 'us' in a general sense, for people of every side of position). I think you set an example here of listening even in the hardest of circumstances. You see news about kidnappings and murders, and proceed to listen and speak calmly. I admire this example and will do my best to do likewise. I cannot change the situation on my own, but you're inspiring me to try to bring a calm and empathetic narrative. Praying that such a gentle answer will help turn away the wrath you fade.

Thank you for a very nuanced and educational video. Not many engaged in a war are as nuanced as you. I do respect that very much. It seems to me the Palestinians greatest problem is their own narrative, and for as long as they do not chose the path of Gandhi or Martin Luther King Israel will be fforced to fight existential wars. In that perspective it will be natural for the Israeli opinion to become less nuanced and more radical. The present war may be a preliminary stage to a wider and more brutal conflict (I hope I am wrong though).

You've had some interesting videos. I first encountered your channel a few years ago when I decided to look up Jewish history because it was essentially a big gap in my area kf knowledge (didn't finish my M.A., I focused on medieval Europe, early Christianity, and public history). You've shown some fascinating things that I was only vaguely aware of or completely unaware of. The events of the past two months have been rather unfortunate and I have been worried that the only possible outcomes might be varying degrees of violence and misery, and that the strategy of Hamas is specifically to maximize this to radicalize people and present themselves as victims. I've recently been reading a bit about Jabotinsky. I rarely hear him talked about in regard to his influence today (it seems like the left faction as exemplified by Ben-Gurion is much more prominent in popular memory), but some of what he had to say is very interesting in the context of current events.

Thanks. I did mean Israel. I had to shorten my original comment a few times because it was rejected by KZbin. A British International law expert Natasha Hausdorf presents a cogent case that the West Bank is not "occupied" and no annexation has taken place because, in simple terms, a new state adopts the boundaries of the previous administration which in this case would be the area of the British Mandate minus Jordan. This is available on youtube. It is also well worth watching her interview with Katya Adler of the BBC where she exposes some biased reporting of the current conflict by our supposedly neutral national broadcaster.@@HenryAbramsonPhD

Hi again, Henry. I'm really enjoying your gentle and informative approach to this history and am learning so much but, that said, I'm the guy who gave you a bit of a hard time in the comments on your Islamic antisemitism video for glossing over the deeply entrenched, repulsive and undeniable Jew hatred in the Koran, the Hadith and the Sunnah. To your credit, you replied that the video should have been longer from which I inferred an acknowledgement that, if it were, you'd have delved into this unseemly but important reality. So, with that, I continue to watch your videos hoping for a course-correction somewhere, indeed, the very kind of self-awareness and criticism you commend the New Historians for at least claiming to aspire to (the skepticism's mine, not yours). But, my friend, you've done it again. Yes, for sure MEMRI offers abundant proof of the perverse, one might even say inverse or evil morality of some Palestinians openly relishing their children and other family members' deaths. Yet you then seem to have looked away when these same Muslims explain why. As devout Muslims, they consider these deaths attributable to "jihad" and thus guaranteed pathways to Paradise for not just the deceased but all their families. This is the death-cult side of Islam that we must face clearly if we're ever going to properly understand our enemies' mentality. One could delve deeper into the obscene financial reward system such "martyrdom" attracts, billions of diverted international aid flowing as honorariums and stipends to families left behind. One could examine the political, social and religious benefits that likewise accrue but it all starts with the sermons, the religious propaganda and the Koran verses and Hadiths that drive it. All that said, you're a very good expositor and I have no doubt that if you expanded your purview to properly engage this aspect of the problem, you'd do an excellent job explaining it. Sincerely.

You are giving Henry grief for being too easy on Palestinians. Others here are giving him grief for being too sympathetic to the pro-Israel side. For my money, that's proof that he gives a very fair, balanced picture of what's going on.

And that’s the fallacy of the middle. Just because I say the stick is three feet long and you say it’s five doesn’t mean it’s four. But, also, I’m not saying he’s too easy. It’s not their fault that Islam is so poisonous and fatal. They’re its victims just like the rest of us.

I am a big fan, orthodox Jewish with strong Israel ties. I think on this occasion you did not give a historical lecture but rather your view on current affairs. Also, did you really speak out as clearly earlier this year when a pogrom occurred against an Arab village with property burning and loss of life? I will continue to listen to as much of your teaching as I can and I appreciate the introduction you gave.

Thank you. And I did actually have things to say about Huwara, just not in this forum.

Professor Abramson, You emphasize time and again that people of good will should be able to get together and resolve this intractable conflict. I agree in principle, but it is apparent that Israel is the only party with any good will, always ready to compromise. On the other hand, as Abba Eban said: "Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity”. They see violence as the only solution. They appear For all intents and purposes to be devoid of any goodwill. We can only rely on The One Above and his IDF. Thank you for all your good work.

I completely agree with you on Hamas and I also would like for you to recognize the things Israel does which are similar to October 7th but are happening 24/7 to palestinians.

I am wondering if while you were at UofT. did you ever interacted with Danny Goldstick? If so, were you able to get along with him, given his political views, and did he get along with Fackenheim?

I see the pain in your face. Thank you for these three videos, which have shed so much light on my ignorance. I had hoped that the series would let me off the hook, and that I would be able to take a 'side'. But I can only see two sides; war and humanity. I am not on the side of war.

Your videos are very interesting. Just a minor correction-the so-called 'separation wall' was not the effective measure that stopped the Second Intifada. Moreover, the Dahia doctrine you mentioned came later, during the 2006 Second Lebanon War. The wall was initially conceived as a solution to the Second Intifada, but it took several years to build. What effectively ended the Second Intifada was IDF Operation 'Defensive Shield' in 2002. Contrary to the Oslo Accords map, the IDF entered Area A, penetrated Palestinian cities, and forcefully, yet effectively, suppressed the Palestinian resistance.

Thanks for this work. I’ve enjoyed listening to you for a few years now. I hear your despair in the 3rd video. But I wonder if there is not a blind spot in your analysis which leads inevitably to that despair. The key to dealing with this is in your hands.
