Eddie Murray was the best clutch hitter that I ever saw. Others might have had a better average or more home runs, but he was the one that I wanted to see coming to bat in the late in the game with runners on base. He hit the ball out from both sides of the plate, so there wasn't much opposing managers could do. And he seemed to be at his best in high pressure situations. A lot of fun to watch for an Orioles fan. Eddie! Eddie! Eddie!

Murray never had a gargantuan season (season high 33 home runs) but he was remarkably consistent for a long time and a great clutch hitter.

I was at The Ranger Stadium in 1983. Ken Singleton came to bat I was rooting for him. The woman behind me was throwing popcorn at me. I also noticed Chuck Thompson and Brooks Robinson in the announcer's booth. I called out Brooks' name and saw the TV camera was put on my brother and me and Brooks was saying we have some Oriole fans here.

The Orioles missed out on a possible World Series in the early-90’s when they traded away Murray, Finley, Harnisch and Schilling. It would’ve been tough to get there considering how great the Jays were becoming, but they would’ve given the Jays a run for their money.
@hardestyrl4 жыл бұрын
Very true, if they did not trade Murray, there would have been no reason to trade for Glenn Davis, and they would have kept Finley, Harnisch, and Schilling. Those early-90s teams would have been a lot better, especially if Finley, Harnisch, and Schilling developed like they did elsewhere.
@CasiodorusRex3 жыл бұрын
How about 1996 when Jeffrey Mayer blocked Tony Tarasco from catching Jeter's fly ball that became a HR and stopped us from going to the World Series.
@TheMadStork833 жыл бұрын
@@CasiodorusRex - possibly. However, the Yankees were undefeated at OPACY that season and the Yankees proved what they could do being down 0-2 in the following series against the Braves.

@@hardestyrl after that horrible 88 season orioles had to rebuild. Murray was not happy playing for orioles and his numbers were declining. Orioles obviously did not get enough in return when they traded him but that glenn davis trade may be one of the worst in history.
@hardestyrl2 жыл бұрын
@@loyaldude10 Murray was unhappy in Baltimore because owner Edward Bennett Williams publicly threw him under a bus back in 1986. Murray had injured an ankle and his recovery took longer than expected, prompting Williams to say that Murray needed to be in better shape and be more productive. Reading between the lines, Williams called Murray lazy. While Murray was out, Jim Traber hit 13 home runs in 212 at bats, leading people to think the Orioles had Murray’s replacement on the roster (though Traber never replicated that production). Add to the list a crowd that started to get on Murray’s case, not to mention the press (e.g. Ken Rosenthal), the situation was made worse. To be fair, Murray didn’t help his case much. He didn’t have the best relationship with the press. Ken Rosenthal called Murray the “Frown Prince.” Some suggest that is why he never won an MVP award, though he finished second in 1982 and 1983. One could argue that Murray should have beaten out Cal Ripken for MVP in 1983. It was a bad situation all around. At that time, the Orioles were in need of a complete rebuild. The farm system, which used to be a strength, was not where it used to be. And, as you point out, they didn’t get enough in return for Murray. The mid-1980s were bleak years.

Eddie was Earl's stud, everybody else were just fillers, even Cal. Saw the Orioles play the Tigers in the late 70's at the old Tiger stadium, it was a double header and saw Eddie hit a home run to upper deck right center field and I swear that ball was still rising when it entered the tunnel. I would have loved to know his exit velocity because everything was on the nose.

Memorial Stadium Eddie Murray memory: O’s in the cellar, meaningless game vs Toronto. Blue Jays pitcher walks batter before Eddie to load the bases (to set up possible inning ending double play). From the right field bleachers you could almost hear Murray think out loud: “You gonna walk the bases loaded to get to ME”?? BOOM, grand slam. Don’t dis Eddie.
