Rick Steves' Europe

Rick Steves' Europe

Crouching down to squeeze through the passage of the most amazing prehistoric chambered tomb north of the Alps, I kept thinking, “For 5,000 years people have lowered their heads to enter this sacred space.” As our “Rick Steves’ Europe” crew was hard at work, I took a moment to grab this clip to share Orkney’s Maeshowe burial mound with you. Watch your head!

I have always had a deep fascination with the historic world that are from the BC time. Especially the ones in the UK because we understand so little

I must say Rick, watching your videos on England, Scotland and Ireland, I may have enough destinations put together to justify a trip there over so many other places around the world worth seeing. That’s always the challenge. Deciding what destination to see next and prioritizing them. I never assume another trip will happen so Great Britain has always been lower on my worldwide travel destination targets. With the great pyramids, Great Wall, Victoria falls and safari, or Machu Picchu as examples, it’s hard to put British Islands ahead, but you are helping me lean that way. Only 3 days left until my European trip. Landing in Zurich in 4 days. Keepin on travelin

Orkney is certainly not "barren". It is in fact extremely fertile as you may have noticed from the rich farmland surrounding Maeshowe. Don't let the lack of trees confuse you.

I watch this vid and truly begin to question the 'Out of Africa' evolution of peoples theory!

*Chase Sage* Humans came out of Africa about 70,000 years ago, long before people settled Orkney and built these structures.
