Today I purchased this very Brazilian Raintree in a auction at our holiday party. It was donated by Mr. Paul Pikel and the money went to the Central Florida Bonsai Society. This video doesn't do it justice and it's great to see where this tree came from before I became it's new owner. I look forward to the future of this great tropical and can't wait to begin working on it. I will probably get some advice from Paul in the future since he has expierence working with this type of tree.

Thanks very much. I’m still active and still displaying trees. Florida is actually very fortunate for our long growing season and variety of plant material. If you haven’t already, be sure to search for a local club, Bonsai Societies of Florida has clubs throughout the state. Also the convention is May 24-26 this year in Orlando

Hiya Paul, ive only been performing the art of bonsai for a few years seriously, but always loved them, out of all the youtube channels, forums, etc, for research, you are by far the best channel that I always go to, if i'm stuck on something, more often then not, you have a video explaining it in perfect detail, in depth, giving me confidence to proceed in a certain technique. I picked up some 'old' maples from a local remote nursery, and will be applying your air layer technique to them. Thank you so much for your video's, and please, keep up the good work, always look forward to new ones... cheers from Australia ;)

paul, after a month or so; my air layering with the fire tree which i told you seems working! :) i can see some strands of roots peeking out through the plastic covering i made. i opted the plastic over the tin foil btw cause using the latter makes my rooting media(tried an ordinary nursery soil which i collected from another pot that we have here at home ;) ) dried much faster, we have much higher ambient temps here maybe that's why. your tutorials really helps! :)

Congrats on the baby, first of all. As for the sacrafice branch on the BRT I find that the branch actually pulls the tree to the direction of the branch so yes it continues to affect the tree and a very good way.

I'm interested in this too. I see a lot of trees with really long thick trunks several feet tall with no branches until the top. If air layered just under the bottom branches, they would make wonderful, thick trunked bonsai. I just don't want to kill a perfectly nice tree just to find out if it can be air layered. I would love to try this though.

That is an excellent question. It is true that the trunk will not continue to thicken once the tree is put into a bonsai pot. In areas where branches meet the trunk the trunk will continue to swell in that area much like reverse taper in a tree when you have multiple branches in that same area. However you will not get the uniform overall growth of the trunk to continue in size once put into a bonsai pot the sacrifice branch only works on that specific area. I hope this answers your question

I recently inherited a Brazilian Rain tree from my best friend who passed away. It is very in need of being cut back I think. He passed in Jan and hasn't touched the tree since that month. So I don't know when he re-potted or if he had it's all a guessing game. I've been researching and learning as fast as I can. I have also a maple and another tree I have yet to identify. Any help would be great. I really want to take care of these as much as he did.d Thank you so much :)

Somethings you say about truck thickness conflict with each other. At one point Ive heard you say once the tree is out of the nursery mix your truck is gonna be as wide as its gonna be. Then you say, once in bonsai mix, you leave a sacrifice branch to thicken the trunk. Can you clarify? Thanks, good vids.

Thank you for the video...I've been away from bonzais many years and picked up at 25-30 year old BRT. Ive only had it for six month and learned more in your 10 minute video then I picked up during that time. I am in Atlanta and so far he has been inside on the a southern exposed window and also use a grow light. Recently no matter what I did he lost all his leaves (hes always inside) I freaked out, continued to water and a week ago new buds were coming out everywhere...after one week Im astomished how much foliage is there!!. I water once a week while inside and Im wondering if thats enough...Soon as temps stay over 60 Ill bring him out on the weekends and see how he does...I thought I could post pics but I can not...Thank you again and Ill be watching!

Hey, This video was great! I just transferred my Brazilian rainforest bonsai tree to a bonsai pot, using cactus potting soil and very small lava rock mixture. When watering it right after the water would not drain out the bottom holes. I am worried that this might cause rotting to the roots. what would you suggest i do? thanks, zack
@OrlandoBonsaiTV
@OrlandoBonsaiTV 9 жыл бұрын
If it isn't draining I would cut back on waterings to give the tree time to evaporate some of the water. In the Spring go ahead and repot into a better draining soil mix

@OrlandoBonsaiTV
@OrlandoBonsaiTV 10 жыл бұрын
The best way to get it to thicken up is put it into nursery pot (maybe a one gallon size) and just let it grow. Protect it under 45 degrees. Keep it fertilized over the winter because it needs to keep growing during the cold weather. It may take a full year to get it to a good size

Hey Paul. I was wondering about how the tree would develop any thick surface roots being planted in bonsai soil. Will that happen, or is that a sacrifice that must be made? Thanks, and like always, enjoy your videos.
@OrlandoBonsaiTV
@OrlandoBonsaiTV 9 жыл бұрын
Surface roots are one of the hardest things to develop on bonsai so that's why we pay attention to them most when selecting material. It helps to visually stabilize the tree and helps us selected the front of the tree. If you put a tree into bonsai soil you're going to have a hard time getting surface roots to develop. However if you plant the tree in a nursery pot with nursery mix for a lengthy period you can get them started and they can improve over time in the bonsai pot. However for substantial surface roots you'll want to have them in place before going to the bonsai pot

Hello. I have one for about a year from home depot. It said irs about 7 years old. It was growing mushrooms on the soil so i decided to repot her. Now, she looks a little weak and still sprouts during the day along with losing leaves. Im concerned. Soil seems to be wet and not moist so I put her now outside to dry up the soil a bit. any suggestions?
@OrlandoBonsaiTV
@OrlandoBonsaiTV 8 жыл бұрын
+prinmiami85 if your soil is wet enough to grow mushrooms you need a better soil mix. Something that drains better otherwise the roots will rot because they are not getting enough air.

hopefully you have solved your problem and saved the tree, but I had the same exact issue with mine. people kept telling me "don't water it too much, let it go dry before you water it again" so I took their advice and only watered it maybe once a week. this was back in january so I figured it didn't need a lot of water, but oh man was I wrong. brazilian raintrees are tropical, and require a lot of water and sunlight to thrive. so my advice to you is this: give it water every 3 or 4 days depending on how hot it is and how much sunlight it's getting. I used to come downstairs in the morning to find 10-20 small leaves had fallen off the tree, and others had turned yellow. I started watering it more frequently, and now it's growing like crazy (I have to prune it every week or two) and it hasn't dropped a single leaf in months. my bonsai went from dying to being one of the healthiest trees I've ever seen.
