Another underplayed Sousa gem given a crisp and convincing reading by a top tier ensemble! Thanks !

When I was in Junior High, the Detroit Public Schools had a FM radio station. On Monday nights at 9 they featured a High School Band Director who hosted an hour of band music. The theme they use at the end of the show was the trio of this march. It still brings back great memories of listening to concert band recordings he featured.

Sousa was close friends with Wilfred Wilson, University of Michigan band conductor from 1915 to 1926. When Wilson suggested that he compose a march for the University of Michigan, Sousa responded that Michigan already had a great march. Instead he chose to compose a waltz for Michigan called "Coeds of Michigan", which he composed in 1925. With the "Coeds of Michigan" waltz, the University of Michigan became the very 1st college for which Sousa composed music. The other schools for which Sousa composed music followed suit. "The Pride of the Wolverines" march (1926) was composed by Sousa a year after "Coeds of Michigan" & dedicated to the City of Detroit. However, Sousa certainly had the University of Michigan in mind when he composed it. That's why he called it "Pride of the Wolverines." There was no Detroit Wolverines pro sports team that existed at the time. However, in 1928, 2 years later, Detroit started an NFL franchise called the Detroit Wolverines which was led by University of Michigan QB, Benny Friedman. The Detroit Wolverines only existed for 1 year before the franchise moved to NY and became the NY Giants and was led by Friedman in NY as well. So, yes, Sousa composed "Pride of the Wolverines" for the City of Detroit, but he also composed it with the University of Michigan in mind.

How about "Wisconsin Forward Forever", composed in 1917 and dedicated to the faculty, students, and alumni of the University of Wisconsin?

For my money this is Sousa's best. Has a terrific tuba part, too!

Yes, this march is about the University of Michigan, but it was dedicated to the City of Detroit. It has nothing to do with the State of Michigan except that the University of Michigan & Detroit are located in the State of Michigan. In fact, the University of Michigan and Detroit existed before Michigan ever became a state. U of M was founded in 1817 in Detroit, then it was later moved to Ann Arbor in 1837.

Sousa liked the University of Michigan fight song, "The Victors," (written by Louis Elbel) so much that he said it was the greatest football fight song. Sousa did come to Ann Arbor to hear the Michigan Band play The Victors. U of M's athletic teams are called The Wolverines - just coincidence?

Sousa never made the statement that "The Victors" was the greatest college fight song ever etc.... Sousa did, however, give the first performance of the march in its band arrangement. A few weeks after Sousa's premiere band performance, Sir Dan Godfrey and the British Grenadiers Band came to Ann Arbor and also played "Victors" as an encore. It was Sir Dan who made all kinds of praiseworthy comments to the press about the march. "Brilliant....exciting...the best..." William Revelli once told me that the oft quoted Sousa remark about the "Victors" did not sound authentic. "Mr Sousa would never make a comment like that. Especially about someone else's march!" The Sousa quote, said to Wilfred Wilson, that Michigan already had "a very good march" is true. Hence, the "CoEds of Michigan" waltz. Revelli felt that Sousa had already composed the waltz and had not given it a title when Wilfred Wilson requested a march. It is interesting to note that on subsequent visits to Ann Arbor, Sousa did not always play "Victors". Rather, he usually played what was, then, the favored fight song on campus, "Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight". The "Pride" in the the title of "Pride of the Wolverines" refers to the fact that Detroit--then one of America's most bustling and exciting cities--was truly "the pride" of the State of Michigan. (Told to me by Leonard Smith) Dr Revelli was very fond of "Pride of the Wolverines". It was a staple encore whenever he went on tour. Often, he would play three "Michigan" marches in a row without pause: "Michigan March" - Goldman (written for the U of Mich Band), "Michigan on Parade" - Karl King (written for the U of Mich Band), and "Pride of the Wolverines" - Sousa (written/dedicated to the mayor of the City of Detroit)
