@@SailingAnarchyUSA Because although it was an old boat, it's a high performance multihull. The on the water footage really contributed to the awesomeness of this boat. I've seen in Santa Barbara and it's visually stunning..

Dudes, thanks so much for making this video. This beast once passed me in my Islander 36 coming in past Point Loma like I was going friggin backwards with only a tiny bit of sail out. I knew about the transpac record but had no idea how fast they could make it to Cabo! It would piss me off if it wasn’t so damn awesome.

Such a shame this beautiful boat is now upside off the coast of Mexico, and such a shame it had to take a life doing so. A big multi is such a complex and powerful beast, and it'll chew up and spit out anyone who lets ignorance, arrogance, naivety, vanity, hubris, or complacency take over. Hell a multi half this size takes absolute dedication to get the best out of safely. Glad Scott got to make this video.

It’s absolutely crazy to even look at up close. It’s docked right next to the dock I always leave from. I’d absolutely kill to even get a ride on something line that. It’s a very very serious boat!

Funny to think, this boat was designed in 2003 and the US hasn't produced a boat that can compete. The Route de Rhum 2002 was the demise of the ORMA fleet even though it lasted until 2007. Another secret to this design was the mast cants further than the other ORMAs. In 2008, Oracle went to France to train on this boat as well to prepare for the monster Trimaran they used.

Thanks for this video. I know zilch about any kind of sail boat let alone a trimaran. I searched this to learn about the one owned by Donald Lawson and is missing ….setting sail from Mexico in early July. He’s from Baltimore and I’m in Maryland and was reading about this missing man in the Sunpaper. The Mexico Navy found the trimaran capsized and no sign of Lawson. It’s possible he’s adrift somewhere on one of the two life rafts on board. The complexity of this boat is so far over my head but I’m glad I could see this. I was curious as to sleeping quarters underneath. The workings are so complicated you have to be an expert to understand them. His wife last heard from him July 12th with some kind of problem..(can’t remember) but there was no communication after that. Anyway, any time I see anything I have to search it and get answers. So thanks for this. Prayers Mr Lawson is found alive. 🙏🏻

Boy that looks like a total blood bath if you don't pay attention. Had a major jones for symmetrical hulls and dagger boards back in the day. There was a time I was weaseling everything I could scrape together to make a stab at the Worrell on a NACRA 6.0 before the race went tits up. Closest I ever came to dying while sailing was on a NACRA 5.8. but that's a story for another day. Great video homey

Such a shame ORMA were abandoned back then. I bet they would have complete fly on foil by 2006 or something like that with a class association, consistent rules. Would have made for insane racing. Now in 2020 most race boats makes less sense. Gitana is great and the true heir to ORMAs but the potential competitor fleet is super small and no agreement could be found on a class. Cup boat are nuts, but not really in a good way. Why move lead ? Unstable, unsafe, very narrow operating range.

The Orma 60 is, in some conditions, faster than the MOD 70. This boat beat 3 MOD 70s in the transpac.. having Loic Peyron onboard probably helped

I wouldn't go so far and say that they were fragile. Not more fragile than ANY race boat as they are extremely lightweight while also under very much wearout because of the racing. And that's it. Name me a racing tri that is used as a cruiser after it's sailing career that has capsized. Yeah. My theory is they only flip if you sail them at the extremes. Which is done wiht sailing. But at cruising you don't get to the flipping point. Tris are safe up to 27° an area in which you will like never sail them under cruising conditions.

don't know about the actual crew on this boat, but in the ORMA days, crew depended on the race, around 10 for inshore racing, less for offshore (probably 5-6), 2 for the Transat Jaques Vabre (France to Bresil), and single-handed for the Route du Rhum (France to Guadeloupe)

@julienstephan5427

@@mattwarning8699yeah, the problem was that the class was not originaly design for it, but since the mediatic focus in France is on the big oceanic race like Route du Rhum, Vendee Globe, etc... they participated in the transat with these trimaran that are kinda instable, and during the Route du Rhum 2002 only 3 of the 18 finished the race. And after the end of the ORMA era, there wasn't a inshore circuit for multihull, so instead they went after oceanic records with bigger boats, particulary the Jules Verne Trophy (circumnavigation), and the Ultim class was born. And in 2004 Francis Joyon proved that it was possible to do a solo circumnavigation on a trimaran. Which has lead to today Ultim class, 100 foot long, 70 foot wide, fully foiling Trimarans optimised for single and double handed sailing, that can do a transat in 7 days and a circumnavigation in 40 days.
