ORP and Your Swimming Pool - Testing the Effectiveness of the Sanitizer

So what is ORP? Basically it is an electronic test to determine how effective your pool sanitizer is in the water - the kill rate of the chlorine.
ORP is more widely used in Europe and is the main safety test for pools in that region. Though not widely used here in the U.S. ORP testing is nevertheless important especially in commercial pool application.
Do you need to test for ORP? Technically if you keep your Free Chlorine at 3 ppm, your pH at 7.2-7.6 and your Cyanuric Acid level below 100 ppm then your pool water should be perfectly safe. The pH is a crucial factor in chlorine effectiveness and it can bounce up quickly by the use of certain types of chlorine, neglect to check it regularly and from low alkalinity levels causing the pH to bounce. If you have a Salt Water Pool the pH tends to rise rapidly also and an ORP tester can show if the sanitizer is still effective.
If you service Commercial accounts the ORP test is essential to make sure the sanitizer is working correctly.
The three main factors that affect ORP is Free Chlorine, pH and Cyanuric Acid levels. Other factors that can affect ORP is TDS, Salt Water Generators, Non-chlorine shock and water temperature. The exact effect of the Hydrogen in a Salt Water pool and water temperature are not known - it is believed that the effects of both are low.

ORP is a very good indicator, however pH must be maintained to a stable level as ORP effectiveness varies with pH reading.

I really enjoy your tutorial videos, especially the intermediate to advanced ones! I never heard of ORP until I watched this video. How much does one of those ORP testers cost?

BigSexiMan They range from $100 to the one in the video which is $200. I just finished a video specifically on the tester itself.

I prefer digital meters but the tech for ORP in automation has gotten so much better.

As clear as mud . What stabiliser levels to you maintain in outdoor and indoor pools. At start of video you said orp is only affective 650mv to 750mv but most of your test results read low orp.

Thank for the feedback. No stabilizer is needed for indoor pools. Outdoor we try to stay under 80 ppm of CYA. As far as the ORP readings it is just difficult to get it right at the ideal range since pH is such a big factor. A pool with a pH pump would be ideal for very stable ORP. At a lower range it just takes the sanitizer a bit longer in kill factor time but the pool is still safe to swim in.

@@SPL I service orp and pH system that we make. But the biggest problem is pool guys and shops don't understand probe systems and why other pool balance effect orp readings. Don't get me started on Total dessolved solids or phosphates problems ohhhh the joy of pools in Australia.

Does PoolRX or BlueRay Pool Minerals effect the ORP results? These are technically only algaecides from my understanding so not sure how it would act in this case.

They shouldn't have any effect on an ORP reading.

@@SPL copper based ones can coat the orp sensor clean with acid the next day after using or orp will read low and over feed.

0:06 you've said oxygen reduction potential, which is wrong. ORP is an indication of either the activity of oxidation or the activity or reduction in the water as an overall average because both are actually happening but which one is more as an average. the reduction reaction is the same as oxidizing capabilities and oxidation reaction is the same as reducing capabilities.

Yes, I still use the HACH testers. My Salinity tester just dies on me last month. They last quite a long time.

My boss told me never to lay your chlorine and acid on the pool edges is he just saying that .

Ruben Ramirez Yeah -true. For filming purposes I did after making sure acid container was clean. I leave them in my tote otherwise the acid will stain the deck or you might forget it which would be bad - especially at a commercial account. Your boss is correct.
