Orsino vs Qunari (Dragon Age 2)

If EA wanted another end boss so badly why didnt the writers just throw in a big demon conjured by the lyrium sword Meredith has or something? Why did they have to make it Orsino!!! He was such an amazing character and it didnt make sense for him to turn like that!

+ThatScottishLassy well, the lyrium sword doesn't work that way. it's tainted. at most maybe like Saren, just fight her twice and the second time she's tainted

@MrUnsteddy I actually think that scene was intended. Throughout the game, we're told that mages turn to blood magic when they're cornered because its easy and powerful yet we never actually see an example other than one-off characters we dont care for. Having Orsino, the most level-headed and reasonable mage met, turn to blood magic shows how desperate the situation has become and that mages and templars are both to blame.

Apparently Orsino wasn't supposed to be a bad guy, but EA told Bioware that they needed at least one more boss at the end, so they chose him. Really out of character if you ask me, but hey, that's how money rules it all, right

I wish I could romance Orsino... I mean, he's so wise... and relatively peaceful... I just can't, dude, I had the hardest time killing orsino in the last straw...

I've just recently completed the game and am still somewhat conflicted on his character. On one hand, you guys say the he became a villain because they were simply lacking one. On the other hand, Meredith was right when she said that he couldn't do all those blood rituals and summonings with no drawback on the first try. Then he mentions Quentin and it's pretty clear that he's O. He's the one that gave Quentin books to continue researching blood magic. He's the one that made your mother's death possible. I liked him at first, but then this happened and I gave up on him.

When Orsino could do this, it makes no sense to me why he needed blood magic for anything. He was more dangerous with just fireballs! =p

@MrUnsteddy Though this is mostly assumptions, but I always felt Orsino saw the circle as almost his family. Even more so since he probably can't even see his own family since he's a mage. The sight of them being slaughtered mercilessly probably drove him to get revenge with any means possible

Orsino had good Character, he was kind and gentle and Wise and he moves with Grace in combat.

Orsino would have been one of my favorite characters if he didn't become a victim of random plot jumping in Act 3 and become a Harvester out of nowhere. As it is, he's still a great character, and his VO was my favorite out of all the elves done in Dragon Age so far.

@MissGorczyca A few moments? All of the mages in Kirkwall - when it was Orsino's duty to protect and educate them - were being slaughtered. Scenes like when he took on the Qunari make me sad that his character took such a tragic turn.

@ukevergil He simply became desperate; his fellow mages were being slaughtered all around him, and he lost all hope. I agree, it was a stupid thing to do, but if anything, it shows how the Templars methods are wrong, especially when Merideth is in charge. They drove him to do this when there was no reason to do so. Mages FTW!!!

I find consolation to the fact that bioware did not intend him as an enemy if you joined enemies. Then they decided they needed two bosses at the end of the game and stuck with Orsino :(

Honestly, I think the writers ran out of time. He was so reasonable! Probably supposed to contrast Meredith...he would never use the logic "dammit we are going to die anyway midas well kill everything around me potentially including mages". Makes no sense.

@MissGorczyca Dude he was appalled by the devastation that he tried to prevent. Mages are fragile beings whose power can save or kill millions, they shouldn't be constantly beat down. It only drives them further into the arms of demons. The Tevinter Emperium is fucked up but that's more due its society than magic its self. Mages need to use Magic reasonably in a society that doesn't hate him. I bet that that if most mages were educated while still loved. Most would turn out like Bethany.

@ReiSilver both are true, but in honesty it makes no sense for him to become a boss battle. If anything he should have become a Harvester and stayed on your side if you chose to side with mages. Otherwise, he just ends up attacking his own allies. Bioware really should've had another way to handle him.

The main reason I dislike Dragon Age II is that all mages go blood magic so damn easily for no reason. Like Orsino. He was such a good example for mages that it made me chose the mage side my first playthrough and he just goes "DERP BLOOD MAGIC"... I did two more playthroughs as a templar to exterminate all mages after that.
