This channel is part of the International Association of Facial Growth Guidance. A nonprofit organisation which aims to raise awareness of alternative orthodontic methods and ideas, which too few people are informed of.
The main aim of the platform is to precipitate debate on why teeth are crooked. Most people are not aware that (in most cases) the dental profession has little or no idea why the teeth are crooked, or for that matter why children need major surgery. Clearly there are genetic issues, however the science is clear, the weight of quality research papers, in respected peer reviewed journals, show that our modern lifestyle is a more important factor and most importantly we can do something about this.
This is especially important as sleep apnoea, TMD, forward head posture and a most otolaryngology problems are implicated as other symptoms of the same underlying problem.

In the pursuit of the truth it is normal in science to make speculative comments which may not have full scientific support, and we welcome feedback and discussion.
In general, the videos posted on this web site are not advertisements, and will clearly be labelled as such if necessary. Apart from educational books, the association does not sell anything or encourage anyone to have any form of treatment. It does aim to make people think, consider all options, ask questions and become fully informed.
Much of what is discussed on this site is not available from even the registered members, however a list of members is available on the web site, orthotropics.com.
Orthotropics essential means straight or correct growth. If your faces grows well it tends to work well. The concept is based on the Tropic Premise; www.watkinsden...
The underlying pathology of malocclusion and the related symptoms is referred to as Craniofacial Dystrophy;
www.nature.com/...
The association feels that it should be possible to prevent or at least minimise the level of craniofacial dystrophy through simple public health measures.

I have slept with my mouth open my entire life. My mom just told me that's just my natural way of sleeping because I have done it since I was a baby. I suffered from sleep apnea in high school and was told that removing my tonsil would help so I got them removed. It helped a bit but I still had sleep apnea. Finally I started mouth taping and my sleep has improved a ton.

How do you prevent rolling on your back? It's dangerous...your tongue can close your airway. I tried taping my mouth but I woke up with arroussals. My mom was the same. And my sister laughed at me sleeping with my mouth open, because she had her lips seeled at night.

One thing I’ve noticed after I started mewing is that I have stopped drooling at night. That was a positive side effect I hadn’t thought of, but it’s really great cause it must mean mewing and sealed lips have started to become subconscious for me

@@whalien1756 Thank you for responding. I want to do the same, this is why I am asking. So, it was a conscious act of keeping your lips together through out the day for 6 months that helped you transition into closed lips at night during sleep?
@whalien1756
@whalien1756 5 жыл бұрын
JoyousChris8 At the beginning, definitely yes. You have to keep reminding yourself to seal your lips and put your tongue on the roof of the mouth during the day. But once it became more natural for me (it's difficult and takes time, but if you are consistent it will happen), that's when I noticed I didn't drool anymore

So I always had a (weird) fear of being kidnapped because if they duct taped my mouth, I couldn't breathe and would die. I have been a lifelong mouth-breather. I tried the tape method for sleeping and surprised myself by not dying and now I know that I CAN survive by breathing just through my nose. Also, after a couple of months, I subconsciously now keep my lips sealed during the day, and my tongue against the roof. I have not noticed the beautification part, but then again, I am 61. Amazing info! I am happy to have found a technique that seems to have changed the actual mechanics of my facial bone structure. Thank you Dr. Mike.

Hey guys! The best tip is to sleep on your back, but with a thinner pillow and with your nape a little upper, like the chin tuck. This will make you stay in a anatomical position and put your tongue in proper posture. Try to sleep like this as long as you can.

Glad you typed this because I have a frozen shoulder and there's no way I'd be able to sleep on my side (which is tough because til the shoulder pain; I was always a side sleeper) Another good tip for maintaining this position is to place a pillow under the knees to help support the lower back

Why don't more people know about this? I went to my primary care provider, sleep doctor, swallow test doctor, Orthognatic Surgeon, Orthontist, Dentist, & most recently counselor. None of them picked up on that I was mouth breathing. Just found out three nights ago. I already have so much relief from mouth taping. It wreaked havoc on my body & mind/brain, and I am 29. In August I had braces put on (2nd time) & 2 teeth extracted to prepare for jaw surgery in summer 2021. Class 3 maccl, open bite, under bite with deviated septum. Caused me a slough of issues, just from not breathing thru my nose. Im literally in shock. Im now able to think clearly & communicate what was wrong with me, piecing together all of my issues. This info obviously needs to be spread across the world- I am an Alaskan Native. I wish I would of known sooner. I had like a super memory as a child, but slow & things were hard for me. Just recently, I noticed I was misspelling words & losing focus. That frightened me more than anything. From one night of mouth taping, my brain feels less swelled.

I started taping my mouth closed with band aids at night and it completely changed my life. I suffered chronic fatigue syndrome for years and my doctor couldn't find any reason for it.. I just had this constant brutal exhaustion and would wake up exhausted even after like 8 hours sleep. Would need to nap every day no matter how much sleep I had. Anyway started taping my mouth when I heard it can make dreams more vivid.. woke up before my alarm went off the next morning which has _never_ happened for me D: I now wake up feeling like I actually slept even if I went to bed too late.. it's been one of the most beneficial things I've ever done. What I noticed also is I started waking up with my tongue pressed to the roof of my mouth (mewing) which I was not expecting!! :)

Thank you so much for your work! You geeeniiusss! I'm 43 and just by being aware of where my tongue is and keeping it in the right place, and lips closed of course, I have achieved great results in just a month or so.. I have always had an atypical deglutition, pushing my teeth forward ( i have an overbite)..plus sleeping with my mouth open. Now I have already gained the habit and I wake up with lips closed and tongue in place. Also my wrinkles on the top of my mouth and nasolabial folds are softer, my lips fuller, my jaw stronger and more forward. I write this to encourage also older people to believe in the great results that they can achieve with mewing. I can't wait to see my face a year from now. Thank you Thank you Thank you. This is an issue I had all my life and no one ever managed to either fix it or even give me directions to improve it. Cheers!! All the best

Comments like this worry me because at 43 progress is VERY slow. Most facial changes happen before 16. The consensus that most change has to happen before 25. The arguement after puberty that any (SMALL) changes would take 5 to 10 years. When people leave comments like this it makes me worry people are using this for purposes beyond its limits. At a certain point it can't change everything.

I drew and painted a lot growing up (still do) which probably meant I was looking down at paper a lot more than my twin. My teeth were more crooked and I have dimples (which I believe is due to the muscles being shorter than the bones which had probably lengthened) but my sister has better teeth and barely there dimples. I then had braces (RIP) and my twin did not. I have a gummy smile which I hate and my sister does not. I would love a consultation with you mike, I have completed the form on your website and recognise you’re very busy. Two identical twin girls (21 years old) who have different severities of craniofacial distrophy would be an interesting case study. Thanks for everything.

thank you, excellent video. personally i have used surgical tape to keep my lips closed during the night, in conjunction with stretching my mentalis muscle to improve the issue of lower lip sticking out/rolling forward. you can best stretch by manuall pushing your lower lip into your mouth over your tongue (placed in front of your lower teeth). by lengthening that muscle it is easier to fall into the correct lip posture. it is uncomfortable and harder to sleep in the beginning. then, after a few weeks you will start to keep lips together more without the tape. the "reminder" techniques in this video would be extremely helpful in making the correction. other postural exercises that have also helped me in this way are to avoid sucking on straws or whistling, which are habits that hurt the form of your tongue, cheek and lip muscles

@mensb1936
@mensb1936 4 жыл бұрын
@@bloxZ yes, over the course of some years all of the above has greatly improved my lips and cheek posture. tape over lips while sleeping is excellent, i almost never breathe through my mouth when sleeping anymore. i think it is also important to learn to sleep on your back with a minimal pillow, this seems to align airways better for natural nasal breathing and keeps your neck and spine in a better position too. i also have less shoulder pain since i quit side sleeping. as for lower lip in particular, the mentalis muscle being tight between your lower lip and chin is the great hurdle to correction. use your tongue to push out between your lower lip and chin, while using your hand to hold your lip back. you will feel the intense stretch in that small muscle. this stretch alone will hugely accelerate lip posture correction, but you must also take the behavioral component into account, and learn to keep mouth closed

Thanks for these videos. I've been mewing for almost 3 weeks now and have noticed a huge improvement. my right cheek hasn't been rounded like my left (was hollow-like), but now it is shaping like my left cheek. I have been trying to just lie on my back to help my face to be in balance. I don't have the downturn lips anymore, my mouth shape is more uniform ( palate) and even my lips shape is getting more symmetrical.

My teeth hurt a lot during the first days (but my mouth hurt a lot when I got my retainers as a kid, so I was why not go thru the same hell as I did?). Watching these videos, there is much emphasis on causes of 'long faces' with restricted forward growth. In my own case I believe that a number of contributing factors: ie mouth breathing, pets in and passive smoking in childhood home, extractions of ×4 molars before puberty (and x4 wisdom teeth aged 18) have resulted in a recessed maxilla, underdeveloped mandible, small upper palate v-shaped bite and the appearance similar to 'short face growth pattern' - I'm an otherwise healthy individuals who has never suffered from 'hypodontia'. I believe that I was genetically dispositioned to have a shorter mid-face, but that that I received badly formulated practice from a UK registered orthodontist in the mid-eighties.

Lots of postural problems related to my spine ( I have scoliosis, kyphosis and hiper lordosis). My hands sometime feels numb or tickly... and so I keep on with this list. I had nose surgery when somebody told me I was a mouth breather because I had deviated nose bone and I had chin surgery... And, as you said, after that my face look fuller and better... but I can’t keep my lips shut yet...soooo difficult,,, I’m 38 now. I want to meet you, I’m a little far away (Argentina). I agree, sleeping on your back without pillow makes your whole spine straight and it's the only way to mew over night. If you sleep on your side or stomach your cheeks are PRESSING AGAINST THE PILLOW which WILL make your teeth crooked over time for sure, also you literally can't mew with proper tounge posture with pillow pressing your face/cheeks so I agree with you guys, I have no idea where did dr. Mew get this from, this is clearly wrong, sleeping on your back straight with no pillow nakes mewing easier at night and it's the only healthy way to prevent crooked teeth, I believe he's wrong about that, he should adress this.

Hey Dr.Mike Mew. I respect your work and dedication. I must have a question. 1. My back part of tounge should rest where. Like I reach back, there is a curve/buldge towards the inside of mouth. Should my back tounge push this buldge or something else even back then that. 2. How to mew while sleeping. Like have that force on the roof I have spend countless researching and trying to make mewing a habit and I have improved a lot. But still the few things trouble me. @sheryla54
@sheryla54 5 жыл бұрын
1. Yes, the position is the ng part of the word sing. Pressure on this will, in theory, separate the transverse Palatal suture and encourage bone deposition in this area to grow the face forward. 2. While sleeping you are not conscious of tongue position, so mouth taping or wearing a chin strap will give you a better chance of keeping the whole of your tongue against the full length of your palate. Hope that helps. Happy mewing!

I've been Mewing since December last year, am 29 now and even am still noticing results in facial posture. Tongue is always on roof of the mouth, I can move it out of position and feels like a magnet is pulling it back in place. The biggest problem is the lips, I am struggling with this. If lips ain't sealed it pulls your jaw slightly open, and trust me it will slowly start becoming more and more apparent. Although I made results, it's frustrating being unable to overcome this. I now got more motivation to really push myself to keeping lips closed.
