I prefer my Orvis Encounter over my clearwater any day. It just casts and feels better. The fact that it's cheaper makes it even better.

Thats suprising! But a lot of people do love the Encounter

this guy is getting weight forward line confused with an intermediate line or sink tip line. weight forward line just means it has a big taper towards the end

Weight forward line floats, sink or sink tip line sinks.
@markthompson62463 жыл бұрын
A weight forward fly line is one where the profile is moved towards the front of the fly line made so as to ease loading the rod for distance casting. A sink tip is what you are referring to which has a forward section with a sinking density so the tip will sink. A weight forward floating line will float all day unless you use sinking bead nymphs or a sinking polyleader to get the flies down. This combo can be used for dry flies although it would be better with a longer leader to allow for better presentation.
@dclnmre3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! im leaning heavily towards picking this as my first set up. Ill be fishing majority Dry flies so ill need to swap leaders in order to do so, otherwise this rig will work for dry flies ?
@jarodmore28363 жыл бұрын
This line tip does sink slightly. Also this rod is not very durable I have the 8 foot 6 in. 5 wt I have broken the tip section of this rod twice. I would recommend a reddington field combo.

I’ve had one for about a year and still love it. I just bought a sage setup but it wasn’t because of anything wrong with the orvis it’s just because I am an impulse buyer and want shiny new stuff lol. I’m not a great fisherman so the difference between a 170 dollar rod and a 600 dollar rod for me is minimal
@andriusbandrius2 жыл бұрын
too funny, weight forward is NOT going to pull your fly underneath, it has nothing to do with floating or sinking. Most weight forward or WF lines are floating. Its a line shape influencing your casting, not floatability.

Thank you. Just one question: where are the rod, reel and line made? I am sure many viewers would prefer to support America businesses and jobs.
@intoflyfishing Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure Orvis' lower level rods are made in Korea. Their upper teirs like Helios are still made in the US I think. Pretty sure all the big manufacturers are like that aside from Winston and Scott

Can this rod be used for sea fishing?
@intoflyfishing2 жыл бұрын
I used mine in the sea for a couple seasons and was fine though it’s not recommended as the reel is not totally sealed as far as I know. Don’t dunk the reel and always rinse the whole kit off well in fresh water and you should be fine.

Would you recommend the 8wt over the 6wt for a multipurpose rod?
@intoflyfishing9 ай бұрын
It depends what you mean by "Multi-Purpose". Just for trout and bass I'd say the 6wt is fine. If you're going saltwater, particularly bigger species, 8wt is an absolute minimum. 8wt is overkill for a sub-4 pound trout, but if you want to also use it in salt, you'll have to go 8 or buy 2 weights.
