DONE! Awesome vid as always Alex, I've been a spin fisherman all my life and last season I thought I'd try to fly fish with little success. Over winter I was determined to figure out how to get better. I discovered your videos and started feeling more confident in what you teach and this season I've already caught 5 good fish on my super cheap airflo fly and I can't thank you enough! Cheers to an epic season ahead.

I’ve been fishing with the Encounter 8wt Combo on the Tongariro for the last 12 months . I paid about $360 for it last year and have been really happy with it so far and after seeing your review I’m off to buy the 6wt also . I must have fished 30-40 full days, caught hundreds of fish and it still shows very little wear . I changed the line last month as it broke , getting wrapped around my Orvis pro boots which I also love, and found the Rio gold 8wtf floating line I purchased was a nice improvement on my cast , all the best everyone, regards Darryl

Hey Alex. I bought this combo last year after breaking my previous rod. It also catches brown trout as I am experiencing here on the West Coast of the South Island. Having fished for many years very pleased with the kit. Interesting to see you also use the floating line for streaming - will try that instead of swapping over to a sinking line. Might take off the tapered leader for the smaller streams/clear water. Thanks for tips. The rod holder is great for the long walks

Done , Great videos, now I am planning a trip out your way end of this year beginning of next, had a 5 week trip to South Island many years back, caught a few fish but GF at the time was little bit instant I pay attention to her and not so much the fishing, that did have benefits but missed out on lots of fishing. Will have to reach out during the planning session to see what to do and where to try, very open to trying both Islands this time and no women this time, wife as she is now stays at home lol
@jeffprice46112 жыл бұрын
I give free fly fishing classes monthly and have been impressed with some of the lower end combos lately. I’d like to have seen you throw the SA line on the rod also, just to see the difference. I’ve found you can improve a cheaper rod with a great line and continue to improve your skills with minimal investment.

More often than not I lose fish just like you lost one at 10:00 min mark ......how do you keep that from happening, is there a particular tip like chasing them down or a rod angle that'd help ....TIA bud
@TrippinOnTrout2 жыл бұрын
As long as you keep good tension throughout the fight, if the hook hold is solid, you will be fine. If you can follow them downstream and get below or at opposite them it’s def better but like in that case, sometimes you can’t. You tend to lose more fish when they are downstream of you coz you are pulling the hook straight out of their mouths (imo anyway)

I like your videos and the scenery is mind blowing! But is it time consuming making your own leader? I just buy Umpquas leader and add tippet ring and about 2 feet of leader ??

Takes no time at all. Building a straight through leader is Much more effective at getting your flies down quickly than using a tapered leader and worth doing

Well, OK, but hardly an objective test, since it's YOU, on a NZ stream. I mean, how much worse would you do with a curtain rail and some dental floss? A much more convincing demo would be ME, with THAT gear, catching trout THAT size, on a Washington State stream. BTW, if my comments ever sound bitter, it's because I am. And BTW, awesome fun as usual, thanks!
