ORVIS - Fly Casting Lessons - The Tuck Cast

This is a great cast to learn if you spend a lot of time nymph fishing! A tuck cast is a great way for you to get your nymphs to the bottom quickly by causing them to hit the water before your fly line does. Tuck casts are perfect for when you're fishing nymphs upstream to the head of a pool and you want them to get to the bottom so they don't drift over the heads of your target fish.
Peter Kutzer, casting instructor at the ORVIS Fly Fishing School in Manchester, Vermont demonstrates how the flies land first when making a tuck cast. He also explains how they break right through the surface and head for the bottom without the line and leader holding them back, helping you find greater success when nymphing.

I use this cast for poppers when fishing for bass, too. Bass like the the fly crashing on the water

Nice tip Peter, or you could just give the line a gentle pull after the forward cast, but il give that one ago, why were'nt these vids on when i was learning 20 years ago, saying that its helped me brush up. Yep James is right over your right shoulder, it looks like a spoon/spinner.

I've been watching these instructional videos with great interest. I'm an "aspiring" fly fisherman (as in, I don't have a fly rod and reel yet), and these lessons are sure to come in handy. But, my ADD has me wanting to ask a question: Did someone snag a clouser minnow in the tree behind you? It's waving over your right shoulder up until about 1:05. Great vids.
