The "funny progress bar" was a firmware update running. I'm guessing that MBP had never been updated to a new enough OS to get a firmware update; so the High Sierra install applied it during its setup - the long beeps and multiple restarts is the behavior of a firmware update. (The different looking progress bar, too.)

It's really odd to think that these are already so old - we had no problem installing these a year or two back, as the certificates were still good, but it's 2020 already - really crazy how we don't even notice that time moves quite fast in terms of how old certain software is... Windows 8.1 is also reaching EOL soon...

So in short, the SOLUTION is to hold down alt/option+Command+R (entering INTERNET RECOVERY MODE) directly after starting computer and letting go of keys when the search starts or when the globe thingy appears. Your mac will probably search for the latest (or first) suitable version for your mac, which is probably High OS Sierra or sometimes the version your mac came with. Simply select the MacOS version suggested and do the installation. Good luck!
@mspeter974 жыл бұрын
Yeah, your High Sierra installer actually did a firmware upgrade, hence that god awful beep and different progress bar. Some installers did indeed expire because the certificate used for them went out of date september 2019 if I remember correctly. The one downloaded from Apple must have a newer certificate for it to work. That whole problem is definitely caused by an expiring certificate.

I am going to go out on a limb here and guess the issue has to be with the certs used to sign the El Cap installer as well as the packages used during the installation. If they are expired, then the OS won't install the package and throw ups that error. This would also explain why setting the date back fixes it, as you are essentially making invalid expired certs suddenly good again. So the take away here is if you are installing an older Apple OS, just set the clock back 1 year after that OS was released and you should be good to go.
@johnDingoFoxVelocity4 жыл бұрын
Ok I can explain everything and you are not going to like it so high Sierra comes with a firmware update with a special nasty feature from Apple called lockout mode now lockout was designed to prevent users from downgrading back to there original operating system. The first error you received was because elcap has to be connected to the internet to verify that you legally own it and that the installer is legit. This is why a patcher was needed to create install media for this version of Mac OS X The clock does have to be changed and the reason is dumb as hell. Apples new firmware with High Sierra detects date and time after a select date the firmware is told to drop supported os so you have to roll back the date and time in order to install the os to bypass the limitation
@IanMatthewMyers4 жыл бұрын
This is not correct. The root cause was that the very had expired in the installer. Expiration date was October 24 2019 if memory serves. You can verify this yourself if you like by taking a Mac that is HS or newer, downloading a fresh copy of El Cap, and install with it w/o rolling back the date. It will work now as the copy of the installer now has the newest cert.

Ken, I'm glad you made a video about this. When I tried to install El Cap it does the same thing. But the machine i tried to install it on was an iMac. So I deleted everything to do with El Capitan and just let it sit there for a couple of months. After a while, Was thinking about it so I tried the update again, and luckily it worked! I did absolutely nothing different. It was very strange... Then for my cheese grater I tried, got the error message, and thought to my self "Not again!". I've experienced every issue you've described (in a very entertaining way) on this video. Do firmware updates come down automatically with OS X when you select Software Update from the Apple menu? I picked up a bricked 2011 i7 (with the Radeon GPU). It powered up, but the owner told me "it only runs Windows or Linux." Sure enough, there was a Windows install on it. I set about trying to do Internet Recovery - and was getting errors, "The Required Packages Could Not Be Installed," or some such. Messed around with it for a couple of days, and finally I found an image of lion floating around the Internets - made a USB disk and it installed. But the goal is to get to High Sierra. So, High Sierra requires you to have at least El Capitan. So I tried El Capitan, downloading the .dmg from Apple and installing it from the Application folder - and it was taking forever to install, just creeping along, and so I shut down and it threw me back into the state I was in previously - *and* my Lion USB drive also couldn't install. I was up until 3 AM, wiping the drive on a Windows system, removing the efi partition... everything failing - then as a last ditch effort I zapped PRAM, and the install worked. I suspect something like this is how the machine initially got into this state - and I suspect it has been in this state for a while, as the Radeon seems fine. So, now I'm back at El Capitan. Same download - createmedia to create a USB thumbdrive for El Capitan - it loads, I can get into the tools like Terminal, but I cannot click to start the El Capitan install program, or ANYTHING on the main menu (Disk Utilities, online help, etc...) I ran Software Update under Lion and it downloaded a bunch of things - but I wasn't sure if it downloads system firmware patches. BUT... I've downloaded the firmware from Apple and tried to install it, and it throws up a message that the install isn't for this system (2.4 and 2.7 - which are BOTH supposed to be for the Late-2011 Mac i7 according to www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/apple_updates_firmware_for_2011_macbook_pro_air_imac_mac_mini ) Other sites say that if a firmware won't install, you're already up to date. But system profiler says Boot Rom version MBP81-0047.b27 and SMC Version 1.69f And I feel like that is NOT updated from what I've read? But it would sure make life easier if Apple made the information match... if you call it 2.7 in the download, why not call it 2.7 in system profiler? Anyhow, that is where I'm at - I've got a MBP 2011 brought back from the dead running a dubious copy of Lion that can't seem to run ANYTHING else except Windows or Linux - and these are my questions. If anyone has any answers, I'd be grateful AF. :)

Follow up to report success. As I said before, neither Recovery Mode into El Capitan nor Internet Recovery Mode into High Sierra worked. Bootable High Sierra USB stick did not work. What DID work was an unexpired El Capitan installer from Apple's website as you mentioned just past 5 minutes. I made a bootable USB of this using DiskMaker X instead of terminal Since I had probably downloaded the High Sierra installer (which didn't work) from the same Apple page, It appears that my old MacBook Pro simply did not want to go straight to High Sierra. I assume that with El Capitan installed, updated and running, I'll now be able to upgrade to High Sierra, even if I have to get there through Sierra first. I'm happy I didn't have to go into Terminal. It seems that a fresh unexpired installer accomplishes the same thing as setting back the installer's clock. Thanks for the video and explanation.

Thank you very very much. I've tried to solve this problem for eight hours until I discovered this video. That solution worked for me.

Amazes me that in 2020 so many others are having the same problem I am with an old mid-2010 MacBook Pro. After wiping it and attempting a clean install of the default El Capitan, I was caught in the same loop. Found your video, and since my intent was to upgrade El Capitan to High Sierra, I followed your instructions for internet recovery mode, found the High Sierra option and proceeded to download. Looked like it was going to work, but after appearing to complete the installation, it reported the same type of "cannot install" error message as with El Capitan. Is my ony recourse to go into Terminal and turn back time? I'm not clear or confident about doing that. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

2:37 That exactly happened with my iMac 12,1 when I was installing macOS High Sierra but it installed and still worked, nothing wrong.

This is also the solution if you boot into Mac Install and it says that the installer is corrupted in VBox and VMware. (just don't forget to turn off the vm internet)

OH MY GOSH This is my life saver. I had been struggling solving this problem for 2 weeks. I called apple store, they said I need to buy a new software that support new OS version. I called other store they charge me $175/hour only for labor fee. what a cost!!! My iMac 2011/ 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, the latest version I can update is 12.06 Sierra. This trick still works on 04/09/2020

Can you make a video for if it says “File system verify or repair failed”? I have a brand new hard drive and I’ve tried so many things already and it’s still not working. I have a 2012 MacBook Pro.

Dude... that mac can support imaging. Are you familiar of making system images in a custom manner? And have a large hard disk drive to store them all?
