You are spot on with the short history lesson on how this car came to be. It was a miracle Studebaker-Packard survived past 1956 when the banks and insurance companies refused to loan them any more money, even with Curtiss Wright giving them a nudge.

Thanks for saving this bit of history, there can't be very many rust-free ones left. If you have seen the YT channel "Cold War Motors", one of his lawn ornaments is a 57 Studebaker 4-door sedan, with rust problems. On the driver's side, where the B pillar meets the lower sill, it is detached and moves around. He called it the "B-pillar delete" option. I was looking at that area when you showed the side views, and good for you that this one is still solid. I remember that some of the Studebakers of this body generation had fresh air opening louvers behind the front wheels, which often rusted. I guess it's a good thing that this one does not have that feature.

If it's not a Studebaker engine, then without seeing it, my shoot at the moon guess is that it's a Rambler 327. If I remember correctly, Packard had a stake in developing that engine and it debuted in '58.

That front sheetmetal really does look like a shark. . . . Are those headlight extensions made from pot metal, fiberglass, or steel. . . I know they are a factory add-on for the 58 dual headlight law. . . . Congratulations on your new purchase!!!! Love those vids!!!!
@OsbornTramain3 жыл бұрын
Both Sheet metal and pot metal. There was no law requiring 4 headlamps, it's a styling feature.....Quad Headlamps were not legal originally in all States in 1957. Nash put them on their Ambassador for the 1957 model year and did it in all 50 States, where Ford, and Chrysler offered Quad Lamps in States where it was legal in 1957, by 1958, all States allowed this, but, again, it was a choice, the low level studebaker offered only dual headlights, same with the Rambler American and other cars on the market.

1958 there was a recession, Fins of the Jet Age was fading. Struggling auto makers had it bad. May you have great success in restoring this old time capsule. Who was president and what was the top ten hit song in 58?

But yes, the late 1950's were a tough time for the industry. Hudson's last year was 1957, Packard lasted one more year, DeSoto was nearing the end, though I believe it sputtered along until 1960, and it was obvious that Edsel was a flop.

The finer model was the Packard skyline with a more squared open grill, this was the starlight and commander, the fish lip up as they called it.
@OsbornTramain3 жыл бұрын
Not exactly, This car's front clip is entirely different from a Commander or any Studebaker for that matter, no part of the clip are used on a Studebaker. The Fenders resemble a Studebaker but only a portion of the fender is the same. The entire lower front fender behind the fiberglass is a different shape and couldn't be used on a Studebaker. The hood and grill surround is all made of Fiberglass. The rear of the car shares a bumper and trunk lid, but the quarter panels and tail lights are Packard only. As I mentioned in the video, the green house is the same but the entire interior is different even using a different dash board. Just like a Buick or Olds, or Dodge or Plymouth share some components, this isn't badge engineered, it's platform body sharing. I've not heard of a Starliner????? The Starlite was the Packard two door Hardtop that matches the Sedan and Wagon for styling.
