There's always something new to learn about Jerry even all these years after his death. To say they broke the mold when they made Jerry is an understatement. His gentleness and nuanced playing was too subtle for many to appreciate, as it didn't conform to the stereotype of what many thought a Bluesman should sound like. The gentleness (a quality that I feel was both innate and also re-affirmed by his close relationship with Mississippi John Hurt) shouldn't never be equated with naivety, as Jerry was one of the most sophisticated souls I've ever meant. I especially appreciated "Spreadswings" insightful comments below on Jerry's techniques.

I was privileged to be a student of Jerry's in the late 60's in Philly. The lessons he taught me remain at the core of my playing through the many styles I have played. I miss him, and the joy he brought into my life.

He worked with Daryl Hall & John Oates in their early years.. He really helped John Oates to understand about rhythm and how to play behind someone and how to transpose parts from another instrument to the guitar. John Oates quoted .. 'Jerry was the man who refined me musically '

Rightup to the essential point about this man as what you've said. He has given me just the same feel as what you described, gentlemans music with the focus on the gentle aspect and lots of blues.........

Jerry emphasized the underlying beat, and how in fact it was the same as a "heartbeat". Notice the drive of his music is silence. Also notice the beat supporting everything he is putting on top. Listen closely, you will hear at times he generates the beat with silence, letting the silence imply the beat in your mind. Also, note what he does carries over to the crowd, they are completely transformed in the moment to be where he is at...they are silent...that was typical of his performances.

Thanks for the comment and I would have liked to be in your place. Funny but I heard quite similar about him, being much that of inspiration as teacher and person as well. I hope these files will remain here forever so everyone still can enjoy this. All the best with guitarplaying and kindest regards, Aart
