What I love about this interpretation is, unlike most piano duos, Basie and Peterson respect each other's musical space and leave room in the piece. They don't clash. They don't fight for supremecy. They work together perfectly in harmony. If you have seen the show from which that clip originates, you may find it warming to see how similar their personalities are to how they play. Peterson is intelligent and full of ideas yet Basie says very little, but makes it Count...

You can tell Oscar is in truly enjoying the moment, taking in those deep breaths, realizing the Count is across from him and they are killing it softly. You can teach musicians notes, chords, scales, but you can't teach them how to to swing it, and Basie was/is the master.

Let me say it two ways: 1.) This is not a cutting contest, this is an encounter between two artists mutually respecting each other, and attempting (and succeeding!) at creating a spontaneous masterpiece for the joy of, and appreciation by, the rest of us; 2.) For pianists, everywhere: Zeus meets Odin.

They both really do sit well - loose and fluid with no wasted body energy; alert but not rigid, clear but not dogmatic. They also both play with exactly the hand position that every classical piano teacher I know teaches. Good inspiration doesn't automatically mean good output -- the lessons, the practicing, the teaching is all about opening the channel from inspiration to sound. The road doesn't pave itself.

Basie once said it's not the notes you play - it's the ones you leave out. This piece is a lot harder than it looks. There is a conversation going on through out the tune as Basie and Oscar are feeding each other notes and obviously having some fun at the same time. Really enjoyable!
