I've actually grown to like the engine sounds nowadays. Namely the Renault and Honda IRL. Still powerful stuff That being said, long live the V10s

Same here. The V10’s sounded gnarly, but these sound super refined. It sounds so clean, but still super aggressive. Plus, most people that dislike the sound are only hearing a small amount of what they actually sound like through their TV speakers. If they were trackside, and understood how loud they are, they’d probably feel differently.

The Renaults have that cool sounding whine when its revving up, not sure if its the turbo spool or the transmission whine. The Hondas have that aggressive off-throttle sound. The Mercs have more bass in their sound. The Ferraris just sound clean. I just wished they turbocharged the V8s instead. We might've got CART indycar sounding power units. Those sound nasty at full chat 15k rpm.

They do sound OK now, but I think a lot of it is just forgetting what V10s sound like. If you go back and compare back-to-back, the difference is quite stark! The modern power units definitely do not sound as unique as an extremely high-revving V10.

Gotta say, the Renault E-Tech V6 probably sounds the closest to the previous V6 era as it seems to have an identical deep bass and low throttle burble as the Renault-Gordini EF1.

The difference isn't that big. It's a small V6 with even firing order and equal-length headers. The thing that changed the most is how the turbine spins, the electric motor goes mad quick with no lag

Especially the V6 Renault and the Ferrari engines (apart from the 2018 Ferrari with it's awesome wastegate sound), the Merc sounds way better and also the Honda with it's growl off-throttle.

The Renault powerunit sounds awful. Like it's just an air handling system - all air rush noise, no combustion noise. The Mercedes and Honda's much better
