I don’t understand why people keep bringing up Lando lifting on the yellow. Like are we seriously debating a qualifying session over the safety of the other drivers? I don’t think “pushing the limits” and “trying to get away with it” is worth it when you could potentially kill someone. Irresponsible when at the end of the day it’s just a sport.

Whether it’s a matter of not letting a yellow flag knock you out of Q1 when you know short flags are commonplace in every session or committing to a move - or even committing to doing the selfish thing like he started to do in Hungary rather than swap the order when asked safe in the knowledge you can repass him instead of leaving it until it’s too late: If you trust in your own judgment and your own ability you maximise your chances. That lack of faith, borne ultimately of not believing he’d be where he is without his father’s wealth, is what has both Leclerc in a much worse car on average and Piastri ,who he should be decimating in equal machinery based on experience, so close with him. I’m harsh to Lando because I think he is good enough - he might not be a Senna level talent, but if he hadn’t been deposited right into McLaren (which was always going to be a force to be reckoned with even when they weren’t performing as well as they should on a Sunday afternoon), if he’d had to spend a season or two getting rammed by a Grosjean or Mazepin type instead of having the loveliest bromance with the all around mensch that is Carlos Sainz Vazquez de Castro and just being showered in praise from all corners - and if he’d gotten through F3 and F2 with the same sort of sponsorship deals the others have to chase down in their junior years, he’d only be strengthened by his honestly impressive performance last year proving to himself and everyone that he has earned it and can really deliver with a winning car - but it’s like something changed in Qatar and now every little step Oscar has taken with fewer material resources at his disposal both through his progression and in the present is a threat. I’d be fascinated to hear the opinion of a psychologist without F1 knowledge or biases, but as someone with the same “affliction” (albeit very different circumstances) it’s clearly massive impostor syndrome. The greatest most accomplished sporting heroes rarely start out with huge privilege. I mean they’re not all Esteban Ocon whose parents were all “let’s be homeless!” or Robert Kubica who never had wet tyres karting because engines were more important, but basically none of them are like Stroll, Norris, Pedro Diniz, Ricardo Tosser or others from the largely Latin American culture of ‘90s nepobaby pay drivers. Norris undoubtedly has the most talent of that bunch - he/his parents should be commended for the fact he is a likeable, humble guy, but if his talent were combined with a more narcissistic personality a la the aforementioned Tosser/Rosset, or even just that of Lance, he’d be better off.

The issue is why is he not setting a lap earlier. It's q1 all he has to do to get to q2 is beat 2 alpines, 2 Saubers and 1 Vcarb - IN A MCLAREN to get to q2. It's a street circuit where it's almost guaranteed someone is going to screw up FFS Stroll and Perez are in this race. His championship rivals all had decent laps in well before the yellows. It's not like topping the time sheet in q1 gets you pole. Whether that decision is made by him or Mclaren - the result is the same. They tried to get cute and paid the price

Would it be entirely incorrect to suggest that Lando lacks the temperament, composure and perspective to fight for a championship. There's no doubting his speed, and he's certainly cheeky and entertaining. However, Oscar is revealing himself as a determined stone-cold assassin whose posture at all times just reeks of a maturity way past his years. I look back at numerous examples where Lando has rashly made the wrong call...Sochi is a great example. By comparison Oscar's radio call at Silverstone this year demonstrated clear thinking and rational decsion making. They're both great...but I suspect only one is a champion in waiting.

It depends. If those McLaren wings help them a lot and they have to change it it completely might shift again. Oscar does has it in him to not lose his cool under pressure to be a future champion. Lando his self blame doesn’t help him. He puts himself under pressure combined of course with the expectations of the British media and fans because he has the fastest car. If McLaren still has the fastest car it will be a hell of a fight between Lando and Oscar. Other teams might profit next year by focusing on one driver. But I think the rules will be sharpened on the wings next season and it will be a huge fight between the 4 teams we see right now.

@nfpnone82482 ай бұрын
If you were a betting man, you would know how improbable it is for him to win ever, much less next year. There is a consistency element that he would have to have just to compete for the championship, and how many drivers will be competing next year for the championship, especially since Red Bull is not dominant as they were in ‘22 and ‘23. He may end the season with more points than Lando next year, as it’s impossible for him to pass Lando this year as they both are in the points, if not on the podium, every race. Next year he will have to win over Leclerc, Hamilton, Norris, Alonso, maybe even Sainz and Russell. It will be a free-for-all next year, the championship will be wide open, but I think the competition is too stiff for him to win.

@ Cameron, why aren't you placing more emphasis on the "mini-DRS" that Oscar had. Surely, that was a major contribution to being able to hold off Charles. How can it make sense that Charles was unable to pass Oscar on the track with the longest straight. I think Perez was at fault regarding the accident, as he was the car behind and was left more than enough space to move over to the left. Lando wasn't at fault for not going through to Q2. The blame is fully on McLaren for putting him in that position in the first place, like Mr Windsor said.

Well I have the benefit of hindsight but it makes all their comments appear to be twaddle . What a difference a week makes.That hindsight is Singapore. Lando domination. 41 secs ahead of Oscar and Lando was lapping cars. Marko said even if the RB had been optimised with the new updates it could not have been close to Norris. Horner said Lando was so fast he was taking the P>>>, 19 secs ahead of Max on lap24. The reality of Baku is that Oscar couldnt get away from Charles even though he had the fastest car and Charles couldnt attack because of Perez behind him. The fastest driver in the race was Lando but he started in 15th. Lando has outqualified Oscar 17 -4.including sprints. Is that a potential world championin Oscar? Oscar is a great driver and he may become a world champion one day if he improves sufficiently. If Lando hadnt had bad luck ,and no he shouldnt break safety rules or drive to the yellow flag as the driver doesnt know what has caused it, he would have easily won Baku.
