There was much psychedelic weirdness in Michigan in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. There were large cities there and, in the post-War decades at least, burgeoning, still-relatively-affluent suburbs. The concentrations of middle-to-upper-class white kids there were the same type who, in a sort of logical extension of the mid-’60s garage band phenomenon, tended to create a lot of psychedelic weirdness later on. Jupiters’ Children’s fantastic “This Is All I Ask” is a Detroit-area record from 1970. The noisy production, haunting background vocals and bassline drone make for a strange record for certain, but its deeply melodic sensibilities are somewhat unusual, even by the standards of all that was “strange” about locally-produced psychedelia for the period. Everything is kept restrained in an era of meandering jams and over-the-top vocals. The Carnes listed in the song’s credits is Preston Carnes, who most likely sings on this. Carnes was a local singer and musician who released a few rock’n’roll-oriented 45s in the early ‘60s. Carnes also operated the Astra Records label, with some fine local R&B and instrumental rock ’n’ roll 45s to its credit in the early ‘60s. In late ’66 or ‘67, operating under the sobriquet Preston, he released “This World is Closing In On Me” b/w “Waterfalls,” a brilliant and (again) wholly unique record of unique and early Michigan psychedelia, first released on the Sound Patterns label. (“Waterfalls” can be heard on this old Office Naps mix.) This record is also worth seeking out for the equally brilliant, wigged-out flipside, “Check Yourself (Superman’s Got Blisters).”

@@RedVynil Have you ever heard of Garage Punk or Acid Punk? Come on - why did you even end up here - go listen to U2... they released their records on coloured vinyl... even red... lol... it's the attitude that counts, not the year
@RedVynil
@RedVynil 5 жыл бұрын
No, I've never in my 62 years of collecting records ever heard of garage punk. I've heard of garage and I've heard of punk. They are two completely separate things. Nor have I ever heard of acid punk. I've heard of acid rock! That's got nothing to do with punk or garage, either. I came here to get a look at this label because they didn't have it posted on the site where I was reading about it.Why would I wanna listen to U2?? They suck large rubber donkey donagals!! The only good song they ever did was, "Sunday, Bloody Sunday". In the case of this record, the attitude is psych with a faint hint of garage. Learn your genres, like I did, instead of making them up as you go along. It's not hard.

@@RedVynil sorry - didn't mean to be rude. I was a bit upset by another comment at the time I answered you. My apologies for being disrespectful. Garage Punk is a widely used term - to give some weight to what I say, I can mention that there is even a compilation series called Garage Punk Unknowns. These are, like many terms / genres, something that has come along during the years of collecting to better describe a certain sound. I'm only 39 years old, so Im sure there is still much to learn, but it's not something I've made up and people who collects garage most certainly know the term/genre, at least as an expression for the more punk-attitude garage rock around. Same goes for Garage Punk that sounds like it's been recorded on acid... they simply call it Acid Punk. As for making things up as they come along - you seem to be a Trump suporter according to the things on your YT channel. He does that all the time and it actually hurts people and their lives. Maybe that's somewhere you should apply the same philosophy
@RedVynil
@RedVynil 5 жыл бұрын
All I'm saying is that it is ONLY people in the last decade or so that continue to call garage rock, punk. Punk didn't exist until the late `70''s and they are two completely different types of music. One of the biggest reasons genre confusing cheeses me off is that I like to get psych compilations and I don't know a lot of the artists or songs on these comps and quite a few comp producers CLAIM they're selling psych and I lay out as much as $20.00 for one thinking I'm getting psych when everything on it is garage! I like garage, but if I'm looking for psych, I want PSYCH, NOT garage!!Likewise, I'm not much into punk so, if you're going to call stuff, punk, when it's actually garage, and I'm looking for garage, I'm going to steer clear of it because you've labelled it as punk. I've seen a number of records labelled as psych JUST because they were released in the `60's, even though they aren't the LEAST bit psych! I've seen some sellers that don't have a clue what they're selling, so they call it, Northern Soul, even though it's not ANY kind of soul!! Liar, Liar by The Castaways is northern soul??? Even my neighbor, whose been collecting since the `40's, will tell you about that stuff happening to him all the time. It makes buying stuff more bothersome because you DON''T want to keep buying things from a store and have to keep returning them because they're mis-genred. Pretty soon, the seller's either going to stop selling to you or will refuse to take returns from you. It's not his fault, but it's not mine, either. I'm buying, blindly (without hearing what I'm getting) what the producer is claiming is one genre that I'm looking for and it's actually something I'm NOT looking for. It also wastes my time and money.

Why is this labeled dark psych? Great song but stuff like Things To Come around '67 is true dark psych.
@oscarowski
@oscarowski 8 жыл бұрын
because it has quite an eerie feeling to the arrangement and I felt the lyrics were kind of dark-ish... you have a point though as Things to Come has a much higher "dark" index as to the lyrics.
