great speech about taking small bets on more original ideas rather than huge bets on corporate box office machines

Mark Ruffalo was talking about a similar project he did, I cant remember which one. He said - it was rough, we had no money to do ABC and XYZ and we had to really suffer in doing certain parts. We can do it low budget stuff and still create something great and others can do it too. You dont need big production companies to be in control, you can be in control and deliver great stuff.
@zacklarez10 ай бұрын
He's right. Stop betting the farm on your huge ass expensive movies when you make such bad decisions. Bet on smaller budgets, more unique perspectives, give each smaller section of moviegoers the movies they love, movies for them. Statistics and analytics are counter to art and this is an artform. Give artists the reins.

Congrats to him and what a great speech. What he said was important and timely. Hollywood and the Oscars should be about more than just the big budget films. Diversity is still lacking, and Oscar is still extremely YT. Nice to see "the little guy" steal one that was well earned and well deserved.
@brunonola900610 ай бұрын
My favourite speech all night. But diversity over merit is what’s killing movies. And there is a lot more representation in film these days. But that shouldn’t be the barometer for good art. Good art is universal. Not white not black, just human. Stop making it about the differences and start seeing everyone as part of the same community.

3 minutes into the movie I said “Greenlight special!” As I watched it confirmed my “how to win an Oscar when you’re black” theory. Still. Magnificent! It was a tractor beam coming from my big ass TV. I couldn’t even go to the bathroom. I felt the characters and the imagery were of utmost importance, Except for the ones with lifestyles I will never buy into. I considered those “price of admission roles.” After fast forwarding I couldn’t wait to get back to the real story. One thing I can say about race in America after watching this, if dealt with correctly, it yields great writing!

Hopefully the lesson here is there is an audience for things that are different. There is an appetite for things that are different and a story with Black characters that’s going to appeal to a lot of people. Black films don’t need to take place on a plantation, they don’t need to take place in the projects. It doesn’t need to have drug dealers in it and doesn’t need to have gang members in it. There’s an audience and market for depictions of Black life that are as broad and as deep as any other depictions of people’s lives.

Greta deserves a nomination, to say the least. I had a stint with the industry and heard a story how - back in Sacramento - she was dumped by her then-boyfriend, who told her she would never achieve anything, while he was kicking her out of his car. Guess, she proved him wrong...
