This movie has all of the pieces you'd find in a masterpiece. It has a brilliant cast that delivers captivating performances, beautiful cinematography, and out of this world production design that you certainly don't see everyday.

Like most truly visionary projects, 'Babylon' is destined to be misunderstood and polarizing for the next 10 years until detractors realize it really was That Masterpiece all along. Yes, I'll plant my flag now and compare the current spate of reactions to those of Kubrick's films, another visionary artist who spent much of his career being sorely misunderstood and unfairly maligned: initially the feelings of a new Kubrick film tended to be confusion, frustration, and a sense that the man was mired in self-indulgence. But then, as year after year after year passes, suddenly there forms a sea change in recognizing the works' latent genius. It happened with '2001', 'A Clockwork Orange', 'Barry Lyndon', 'The Shining', 'Eyes Wide Shut'... and it'll happen to 'Babylon'. Yeah, I'm saying it. Best film of 2022, and an early viable candidate for film of the decade if the divisive responses are any indication. The most divisive films always end up being the most important ones, whether you like it or not. ;)

Great cinematic experience, a boldly uncompromising masterpiece. I think it did not well at the box office because of the ending. Everyone you have grown to like and root up to goes down. If the movie had ended 20 minutes earlier with some vague hints of tragedy it could have been a hit. I hope Damien gets full backing for his future projects. He is great artist and visionary on a scale rarely seen since the rise of Coppola and Scorsese

I don’t understand the hate towards all the big recent film projects. Once upon a time in Hollywood, The French Dispatch and now Babylon never get the reviews they deserve. I think people get way too caught up in the idea that a film has to tell a compelling and deep story that delves into the characters soul for 2 hours straight. Why can’t a film just be the experience of it? Why is it so hard to just get pleasure from looking at a series of chaotic images working in tune to music, colours, people, nature, style, beauty. The film’s main criticisms all seem to be linked to things the film isn’t even trying to show in the first place.

Yes Ollie, I have always been frustrated by the long-held notion that Style and Substance are somehow mutually exclusive, that a film whose central function is that of Form is suddenly a film without Substance -- even though that Form *is* the Substance. I don't understand why this is such a difficult notion for people to grasp, but it's also the reason why I literally cannot have a discussion about cinema with your typical mainstream viewer who sees maybe 10 films a year or something, and they're usually not very good in the first place. Film is the perfect medium for abstract representations of reality, but all mainstream audiences want are fluffy, easily digestible, formulaic narratives in which everything from symbolism to metaphor is spoonfed to them. Pathetic.

One of the major problems in Hollywood right now is marketing. Mind you the movie was a bit dark but I saw so many ads on apps like tik tok or even ig where they focused on individual characters like Toby’s cameo. Where Toby is a creepy goon. There were even bits with filters of a snake (where the snake was talking)….I liked the movie it felt a bit long but it was nothing like I thought it was going to be. If this movie didnt do too well like the one before it. A lot of it was the marketing.

I really enjoyed the film. I think it would have been more successful to focus more on the love story bt Manny and Laroy relative to the other scenes. The ending would have stung more and the plot would be more focused. That would've gotten it to masterpiece territory. As someone who loves cinema I still did enjoy this film alot

@@DurpyKraken Guy is a complete fraud. Whiplash is great but he hasn't come close to that movie since. The first 10 minutes of La La Land was great but everything else in that movie was so meh. First Man was boring. And now he's made this Trainwreck. The decline has been steep. People were way too kind to La La Land and First Man because he had the good will of making Whiplash, his only properly good movie. Now he's been exposed as a one hit wonder. La La Land was especially overrated.
