But people need to remember that funny people turn excellent dramatic performances, but not a lot of dramatic actors can be funny.

I think people who are only equating her comment about "politics" to mean race is short-changing her message. Don't forget that a lot of Oscar season involves actors schmoozing in Hollywood to get a nomination (making sure your film is seen and has buzz to carry it over for three months) and once you get a nomination, you have to do all the publicity rounds and behind-the-scenes type of networking in order to "win favor" with a lot Hollywood who also happen to be members of the Academy. A lot of people have spoken about it. In this particular year, Mo'Nique refused to campaign for an Oscar and wanted it to only be about voters picking the performance they liked best. So, when she talked about "politics" she was really talking about that. Of course race does play as some movies need more campaigning than others and some films are simply going to be seen by more members based on their tastes which can be shaped by their own life experiences and what resonates with them. Look at the Academy demographic (race, gender, age, socio status, geography, industry) and you'll see what movies tend to be up their alley.

All the while, it is still her own fault as she was an adult that was supposed to be making adult decisions. And because she refused to do so, her daughter suffered even worse than she did. I guess we all understand now where Mo'Nique was coming from when she said "it was about the performance and not the politics"! Mo'Nique kept it 💯 as always

Mo'Nique seriously deserved that Oscar! When she walks up the stairs onto the stage and the music is playing in the background, it's so iconic!

I was already crying after watching the precious clip. Clicked on this and immediately saw Robin Williams 💔💔

To me this was one of the best speeches for the oscars. I've seen Monique in all of these movies where she is loud and big in personality that you forget the woman that she behind the character. She speaks with such intelligence and that's not something I hardly ever pick up on her when she was in movies before Precious. I feel like when you win something like this it's great to honor the ones that came before us and to reflect on all of the lessons before that big moment and she did so I applaud her. Congratulations!!!!

Somehow taken 14 years but watched Precious for the first time and Mo'Nique probably earned that Supporting Actress Oscar more than anyone else that has ever won it. Had to come see her speech after watching that. She was brilliant.

One of the best performance ever! Monique very well done. Your character was amazing. You are a real actress and your talent is such an amazing gift.

This movie was so intense.. It didn't even feel like Monique was acting.. more like a documentary. I still cry when I watch that scene with Mariah Carey and Monique

This was in 2010, celebrating films released in 2009. 70 years before this has happened, Hattie McDaniel won that same Oscar in 1940 for her supporting performance in 1939’s Gone With The Wind, making her the first black person to win an Academy Award. Damn, kinda poetic if you think about it

I just watched this Precious movie on HBO and my gosh this woman can act. Her performance is so strong. I cant speak of the other nominations so not as to compare, but to say Mo'Nique is very deserving of her win. And such an elegant thank you speech. God bless everyone and may you all stay safe

Notice how Monique didn't hug Lee Daniels when she first stood up or even mentioned his name during her acceptance speech. When questioned about it her excuse was that she already did on all the other award shows. However, the Academy Awards is way bigger and meaningful than the other award shows. Without Lee Daniels there wouldn't be no Precious or Oscar for Monique and of course now no Empire for her. If somebody gives you an opportunity of that magnitude the least you can do is be humble and thank the person who put you up there. I hate politics too but they exist EVERYWHERE not just Hollywood. That's just the way it is.

A Will I don’t think Lee Daniels was broke. He produced Monsters Ball in 01. The film won Hallie Berry an Oscar for Best Actress.

This is probably the only win that I feel it was 100% genuine, and based on the performance only. Most actors are like “look how many times i’ve lost, how much I suffered to get into the character, how many talk shows I went to, how much I fought to get this movie done, how likable I am, blah blah blah” Mo’Nique was different. She didn’t campaign, no “politics”. She did the film, delivered a great performance, people enjoyed it and the voted her. This is the power of a talented woman who believed in herself. Love her and respect her!!!
