I've been saving this video on a browser tab for a few weeks, and I finally found the time and headspace to watch and give it the attention it deserves. At times I found myself getting antsy because I was getting so excited by what I was learning. But I lit a candle, took breaks, took notes, ate snacks, made a night of it. Thanks so much for taking the time to make this, and thank you for the inspiring info-It was worth every minute!

Am so late to the party with this I feel as if flares have come back into fashion in the time elapsed! But wow! This is such a helpful and fascinating video both for the lovely ambient music vibe and the detailed FM sound design. I will come back to this over & over as I learn and play with my new Digitone which arrived yesterday. Interesting to hear you say you don't use Overbridge. Overbridge is the single most important thing Elektron have introduced, for me personally, as I like expanding my hardware setup along with still using a DAW. I actually have no more inputs available on my Apollo interface and don't have physical space for even a small mixer without totally reorganising the room, so Overbridge allows me to use the Digitakt and Digitone without need for analogue inputs to my system - an absolute godsend. I wish every hardware synth by all manufacturers had an equivalent! In fact my Volca Keys is now also going into my system via overbridge, through the analogue input of the Digitone. By the way, the finished piece puts me in mind a little of the slow intro section to Tangerine Dream's Ricochet. 👍

Probability has to be one of the most powerful functions. I used to have to record 2-3 min audio loops to achieve the quality of a 13 step seq with probability! The first time I experienced the wonders of probability functionality was with the Novation Tracks. Then the Peak update gave us probability on arp. Really great tool for ambient composition because you no longer need 128+step seq to achieve a natural organic random quality and the illusion of long spaced out loops.
@OscillatorSink

Amen to this. It's the staple of generative music and the first thing I go to check is present on any sequencer.
@yarobrock
@yarobrock Жыл бұрын
I own the Five12 Vector sequencer for Eurorack and it has my favorite flavor of probability. You can have it on/off like the Elektron sequencers, but you can also choose another note that will be hit x% of the time. I love this because you can have a regular sequence with no breaks that has variation built in. I haven’t figured out how to do this with my Elektron sequencers.

I'm still just in the first sound but I had to stop and comment on how amazing and creative I've found the way you programmed the steps with all the note values, the modulations and parameter lock. I was wondering for a long time how people could achieve such a moving pattern, almost perceived as modular self-generative, with the digitone 'closed' pattern system and you just gave me the answer. I guess I still have to commit to the Elektron's sequencer potential. But this was nasty! Thanks a lot, now I'm gonna keep watching the rest!

*BRAVO* 👏🏼 Wonderfully done! Thank you so much-I learned a lot of technique that can be applied to many machines with similar capabilities-like my MPC ONE, on which I can literally replicate everything you’ve done here on the Digitone, though not as handily! I also love the way you explain how and why you’re selecting and adjusting the various parameters of each control/filter and so forth, _”to punctuate…some goddam reverb…in context…”_ 😎 The composer of the ‘The Outer Limits’ main theme score and much of OL’s background music would have no doubt sacrificed at least one limb to have this sonic capability, it is simply immense-esp. at around 45:00 (I’ve been trying for decades to electronically replicate that _reverse-running electric vacuum cleaner_ sound-I often came close, but no luck to-date). 😊 Personally, I’m reluctant to ever buy one of these or any other *_ELEKTRON_* synth because of the display-it is profoundly, inexcusably bad in every way shape or function! Even if they were trying to present it as _a cool old 8-bit world reminiscent of the earliest LED display technology,_ it just plain massively sucks. If actually trying to be ‘retro-cool’ or something, it is a miserable, unfathomably ridiculous, insanely absurd failure. Why? Even the cheapest toys out there have better displays, x 100%! It makes me wanna hammer an old Casio Data-Watch into it! THAT would be a hundred times more preferable than Elektron’s current LED display technology! _and the _*_voice stealing! THAT is a total deal-breaker!_* My God People! THIS IS 2023!_ 😂😉

Cheers! Kind of, but your options for shifting timbres within the digitakt are a little more restricted - apart from using long samples which have lots of movement in them already. I have talked a bit about a potentially complimentary technique for ambient, rather than drone in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooTPmZljd56EoLs If you're interested in what I've with my digitakt in terms of drone/darker ambient, there are a few pieces I posted last month (and you can get the project files from my bandcamp page if you want to see how they're constructed).

@OscillatorSink
@OscillatorSink 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely - but if you do this then you probably don't want to turn off amp envelope reset and be a bit more restrictive around your voice allocation as you're more likely to steal voices from other tracks if both are using dynamic assignment. I think the whole voice management stuff on the Digitone is full of nuance and everyone can improve their use of the DN by understanding it better (and then using it better, of course!).

you've said Korg OP6 is (was?) one of your fave instruments, I think. It and the Digitone are nominally both modern FM instruments with interesting sequencers, etc. Can you compare/contrast them, for us? I have used neither and don't see myself acquiring and learning both (hence my admiration for you). So it would be useful to have help choosing and understanding their relative advantages and differences. I HAVE watched several demo/tutorials for both, esp DTone, FWIW. I've been wanting to make that exact comparison video for a long time, and it's still on my list, but it's a tough one to structure because feature comparisons are kinda boring so I'd want to build the video differently and I haven't quite worked out how best to approach it.

that's one of the greatest tutorial video i ever seen on youtube:) i've been looking into buying a digitone and mostly i make drone music, so your video explain it well! i don't know if it happen that you ever tried the kodamo essense fm mkII ? i've been researching since quite sometimes and now i'm either gonna buy the digitone or the kodamo, the digitone seems to have a better character then the kodamo, but the limited part is 8 voices vs 300 voices... would be awsome if you can give me any tip or help to choose between these 2? also i wonder if you might ever consider doing a tutorial on the kodamo?

I've never laid hands on a Kodamo, and it's probably a bit of an expensive niche instrument for me to grab one right now. I think, fundamentally though, they are two different instruments - the most interesting stuff that the Digitone does comes at the intersection of the synth and the sequencer and how performative it is, whereas the Essencefm is a synth for synths sake - that's the feeling I get anyway.

@@OscillatorSink yes it make total sense what you said, I've been using the octatrack since almost 8 years so I kind of used to the flow of electron and they're quite perfromative as you said...it's quite interesting how you managed to to create interesting drones using only 8 voices... from my research the essence FM is more close to the DX7 but with 300voices but there's something not so fun about it, anyhow I have sent a message to the kodamo team, they're pretty active and I have mentioned your channel and this video, so who knows maybe they can send you one;) thank you for sharing your thoughts

Just ordered the Digitone. Got any beginner tips? where should i start? Also, have you heard the music from the movie Solaris(Clooney version)? excellent movie, excellent music.

I'd go watch Cuckoo's Mega Tutorial and Jeremy from Red Means Recording's series exploring the Digitone. I'd also at least skim read the manual (the full online version, it's only a quick start on the box, although maybe read that too!).

I wanted to create some cinematic drones and music for my hiking videos. Would it be too hard to pick up for a complete begginner? and do we need other equipment to record from it? I always wanted to create that hauting old church organ sound, would i need to sample that sound or can you create sounds like that? think.. bloody kisses by type o negative.

@OscillatorSink 21 күн бұрын
It would be great for those sorts of sounds, although I would be lying if I said that there wasn't a learning curve if you were completely new to electronic instruments - it's one of my favourite instruments in the world, but I wouldn't pitch it as a synth for beginners. More generally to record it: you would need something to record it with. The lowest friction option with Elektron boxes would be to record it over USB into digital audio workstation software (or even something like Audacity would work). You could also use the audio outputs into a standalone recorder (like one of the Zoom Handy series) or through an audio interface into a DAW again.

Can you make full so gs with dgt2? How do you mould 1 sequence into another? And export as wav s for editing with video?
@OscillatorSink
@OscillatorSink 22 күн бұрын
@@BOTG_Adventures yes there is a song mode, or you can do it live by building patterns appropriately. You would need to record the output of the instrument, either by using the main audio outputs or using overbridge.

Correct me if I am wrong here but you could probably get psuedo-generative using elektrons conditional triggers and probability on steps? I'm curious how far it could be pushed. Also, can one sequence sequences with this? I'm coming from modular and thinking about using this as my chordal, polyphonic textural space box that my modular expresses more rhythmically over.
@OscillatorSink
@OscillatorSink 3 жыл бұрын
Yes - with step-length per track + conditional triggers + random held LFOs you can certainly get to that sort of space. You can chain patterns if that's what you mean by "sequence sequences"? You can also send program changes for patterns.
