OSFirstTimer I do *not* want to be rude, but you did mislead Diana a bit in this video. Using the TOR browser isn't *illegal*, It depends what you do with it. For example, in some countries there are websites that you just cannot access there, because when your proxy comes from that country it denies the access. That's where the TOR browser comes in. With the ability of bouncing connections one from another makes it easy for people to access websites what are not allowed in their country... It's not Tails OS' or the TOR browser's fault that people use it for doing horrible things. TOR is actually made by the US government, to let people in countries that do not allow people to access some websites.

EctoBrine Actually, if you do indeed live in america (not saying that you do, and i'm not sure about the laws in your country) but in America, using a proxy to access blocked websites is highly illegal, so using a TOR browser is illegal here in the US with the FCC defining it as "Using a proxy/VPN to access geo-blocked websites"

I don't think you've fairly represented this OS. You've shown the bad things that can be done with it but you haven't even mentioned the fact that is it used by people in oppressed countries in order to communicate with the outside world without fear of being persecuted by their governments. People like Edward Snowden also use Tails in order to protect their privacy. If you're going to feature something like this on your channel then I think it's important that you represent it properly and not just make it out to be something used by shady people trying to buy drugs or hire an assassin.
@Chr0n0s3810 жыл бұрын
I agree, there are plenty of people in countries with oppressive dictators, where TOR and the deep web are used as a whole to help keep revolutions organized. The deep web is how some of this information gets sent to 1st world powers, and why countries like the US ever got involved to begin with.

You may not know this, but there are countries in this world (i.e. China) that try to keep their population as uninformed as possible so as to rule them using propaganda and censorship. This OS provides a way for the people who live in these countries to inform themselves about actual reality. The Windows XP-like GUI enables people to do so even in a public setting (like an internet café). Privacy is not a bad thing, it is the foundation of freedom and should be embraced for what it is.

EDIT TO ADD: I've thought about this more and Diana did not have the full story behind TOR, deep web, etc. (because this is an April's Fools joke type set up)... So, it's not really fair for me to be "shocked" by her reaction. However, I still hope both mother and son consider the broader implications of anonymity and the danger posed by condemning tools because of those who misuse them. The very same objections she voices were used decades ago against the internet proper when it first came to light that people were able to download things like the anarchist's cookbook or instructions on how to make pipe bombs. You can look up all kinds of dangerous and harmful things on google... does that mean we should eliminate it totally so people don't have access to that information? No. The risk of people abusing such information is just the price we pay for living in a free world with a free exchange of information. The internet (and deep web and TOR browser) are just tools. What people do with those tools are on them and any criminal activity that arises from such tools is NOT the fault of the tools themselves.

This mother's comments sound very much like the arguements used by those who claim their only intent is to stop illegal sharing of copyrighted works. "SOME people MIGHT use it for illegal activities, so it shoud be shutdown for everyone". IMHO, people who use these arguments are either unaware of the consequences they will have, or are dishonest individuals who depend on everyone else's lack of knowlege to increase their own crooked power (I realise the mother belongs to the former class). That said, I would suggest the viewers and the OSFistimer team watching some of Richard Stallman's videos, or reading some of the things he's written. That way, you can see just how dangerous such blind decisions can destroy cyber freedom. As Cantecleer as pointed out, it's not the tool's fault if the owner does something "bad". IMHO, he/she deserves more likes than he/she has at the time this reply was posted.

And here I thought the U.S. mindset was getting bad. It's sad to see people who think "illegal" equals "immoral", that, instead of government being granted limited powers, citizens need permission to do anything, and that crime prevention is preferable to crime punishment :( Anyone can offer up a web page with a list of links to allegedly illicit sites; that doesn't mean that the links actually LEAD to illicit sites.
@amihartz10 жыл бұрын
Illegal doesn't equal immoral, yes, but the majority of stuff in the deep web is immoral. And those links DO lead to illicit sites. The whole purpose of the TOR network is to host illegal sites. No one really uses TOR just for an anonymous browser. It's too slow.
@Hiraghm10 жыл бұрын
Amelia Hartman is the purpose of the TOR network to host illegal sites... or immoral sites? I balk at the suggestion that simply because a government makes something illegal it is de facto immoral. His mum was having moral qualms because she suspected the sites were illegal, not immoral. If, for example, she thinks selling weapons outside the sanction of government is immoral, I'd like to summon the ghost of the Marquis de Lafayette for her edification. He smuggled 100k state-of-the-art assault weapons, aka "Brown Bess" muskets into the American colonies, so that we might escape being subjects and become a nation of free individuals. She's freaking over the existence of the deep web, not over what she has documented proof has taken place there. That's advocating a Minority Report society, wherein your freedom is subject to what others fear you MIGHT do.
@cantecleer10 жыл бұрын

Better name it "Mum assassinates the Tails OS." :D Actually it's not the Deep Nets fault that people do missuse it. Surfing the Internet without being tracked is a good thing! People in some countries as well as journalists need to get information without being tracked. etc.

Since when was the now discontinued linux action show ever about selling stuff? On a side note, thanks so much for mentioning jupiter broadcasting in a previous video - I listen to everything they have to offer now and it's all thanks to that las reference in a really old video.

You've missed the point entirely... There was no explanation of what good could be done with a service like anonymity.... You could've mentioned how journalists use it, how it helps people under the rule of dictatorships or totalitaristic governments use it to communicate. You also should've mentioned how it was created by the Marines(I think...), and that although you can do illegal things on the internet you can do them irl too. This is just an easier safer medium to do so.

Even though, Windows XP is going to be discontinued there is still a slightly newer Windows operating system, called Windows POSReady 2009. This OS is based off of Windows XP, and still performs the same. The support for this version will continue until 2019. **Would be a good OS to showcase**

Tails really allows you to access the dark web. The deep web is slightly different and can theoretically be accessed from any browser, if you have the information or know where to look. Also it's not necessarily about doing anything 'illegal', on a fundamental level it just gives you access to things that big corporations such as Google don't want you to find and have the power to filter out of search results. As a side-note, I think it would actually draw more attention by using Windows XP! Linux is getting more common everyday so only the uneducated would question someone using Linux.
