Fun fact, Speech Recognition actually debutted in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, powering the same technology that used Microsoft Plus! for Windows XP. As such, while this is the first version to introduce Windows Speech Recognition natively, the original version was actually introduced in XP TPC for the dictation feature, and thus is probably even in a worse state from the Vista Speech Recognition. Also, Speech Recognition wasn't actually touched since Windows Vista (until recently with Voice Control for Windows 11 which is basically Speech Recognition's replacement).

I find in my experience with an ok microphone (with no enhancement algorithms being run) and a training session or two, Windows Speech Recognition actually ran pretty well for me. The best part is that it 100% ran offline, as opposed to the built in dictation tool in Windows 10/11, and the Microsoft Voice Access tool in Windows 11, which is not only better for privacy but also helps it run a little faster than that too.
