In regards to the whole "soul-less children" line, I've seen others interpret that as stillborn children. If not for the God's intervention, then Ai would have given birth to stillborn (soul-less) twins. So, the God put Goro and Sarina's souls into otherwise empty vessels to become Aqua and Ruby. Well, there is really no room for headcanon here. Human without a soul=dead. Which is extra horrible for Ai's case because 1) she put her hopes on her kids to find love And 2) every examination of the babies till her labour was fine, they were as healthy as they could be. Meaning she would have stillbirth during labour. That's pretty fucked up.

I liked that this episode gave more context about Goro's life. Back when watching episode 1 i thought Aqua being happy and even feeling grateful to Ryosuke for killing him to be a wild statement considering it looked like he led a decent life with a steady job. I theorized that maybe he didn't want to be a doctor but ultimately chalked it up to your regular anime humor so it was nice to be proven wrong, it makes his reincarnation all the more tragic now that he was gonna be able to live as he wanted but God was like "What if you went through the same fate again but you actually saw your mom die this time lol." and put him in what i'd argue is a worse place than his previous life was.

The age of 16 isn't some random number that Goro picked, it was the age of marriage in Japan at the time the story was written. i.e. "I'll consider it when it's actually legal to marry you.", though it's clear he was mostly saying this as a kind gesture since they both knew she wasn't going to live that long. (Though this year under intense pressure from the United States threatening the loss of favorable trade agreements, Japan raised the age to 18).

She forbade staff from telling him. They only told him she was dying right before she died. When he said he'd consider it he was being genuine.

@@morrigannibairseach1211 You need to reread because what you said isn't true. He was a doctor, he obviously knew she was terminally ill with cancer and had access to her medical records. This idea that you are trying to push that he didn't know is absurd and makes literally zero sense. The only thing he didn't know was that her condition was getting worse for about 2 weeks prior to her death because her getting worse is what was being kept from him. He was surprised by her sudden deuteriation because she seemed fine just earlier that day, and that is when he was told she wasn't actually feeling fine and she was just pretending to be fine because of how much she valued her time together with him. Also, what he said to Serina was pretty clearly just him trying to avoid giving her an answer as a way to avoid hurting her. At no point in the story does it ever seem like he "loved" Serina in that way. And to be frank, I would even argue Serina's feelings for him probably isn't even that kind of love either... it's more along the lines that he was all she had... and in such circumstances those feelings can be easily mistaken for love (kinda like puppy love). She just never had a chance to grow out of it or really approach those feelings in a normal way.

@@SilvyReacts No. You need to reread OnK and read Spica. He was an OB/GYN *resident* and she was not his patient. She had terminal brain cancer. He was a pussy doctor. There is no overlap there. He hung out with her to avoid work and being lectured by his boss. She explicitly forbade telling him she was terminal. He believed she would get better. In Spica Goro explicitly states that he never would have given her false hope. He was being genuine. Before he met her he was a playboy. He quit after meeting her. When she died he got absolutely wasted at a bar, an old fling tried to pick him up saying she thought he had gotten an actual girlfriend and is now back heartbroken because he got dumped. Then her bf showed up and started beating him to death because he didn't care because he didn't want to live without her. It took divine intervention to save him. Then Goro projected Sarina onto Ai to cope. Goro then tacitly refused to deny he would date Ai given the chance. Aqua then describes her as his ideal woman. The Season 2 OP is Aqua pov singing about Sarina/Ruby. She is his fated love. Because the trope being employed here is a classical Japanese literary trope of Star Crossed Lovers Reincarnated as Twins. They were soul mates who were brought together at a time where they could not be together. It's hilarious that people will put down Sarina/Ruby's love for Goro but won't say a word about Kana who met Aqua when she was 5 under the false pretense that he was a normal 4 yr old and not a reincarnated 30 yr old playboy gynecologist. Or Akane savior worshipping him. Nevermind that Ruby held onto those feelings for near 2 decades in a life completely separated from him with all the chances to find someone else. It's also funny how "Gorqua clearly doesn't love her" yet he never manipulates her to his benefit whereas with Kana and Akane he constantly manipulates towards his own ends.

Not sure how likely that is. As i dont think the Dr's murder was planned, since it looked like the stalker was just asking questions to him about AI. And if killing him was more of an "In the moment" decision as he was stood by a cliff, then he wouldn't have had a place to stash the body planned since in that case it wouldn't be premeditated so he wouldn't have the need to prepare a place to Stache a body. So then the question would become of all places at night how would you stumble upon a random shrine with a small cave behind it, idk. Anything is possible i guess but it just doesnt feel likely.

Re: Soulless Children. I think it's implying that the twins were 'supposed' to be stillborns but the goddess interfered. I would not mind if the story didn't touch on the morality on reincarnation but I am glad it provide a good justification while hinting at the bigger picture lesson/motive for divine intervention. I don't know much about the Japanese pantheon but it's would be refreshing to see how they are portrayed here.

I was thinking the same too and it makes a lot of sense. Ai wanted to be able to love and by extention, to have children, Sara wanted to be healthy and be with Sensei and Gorou wanted a reason to live. The god basically granted their wishes in a twisted way: Ai is finally able to love but dies in the process, Ruby is healthy and close to Sensei but they are now siblings and Aqua has a reason to live, but it's revenge. Either that or someone/something interfered with the gods.

Polytheism is very apparent just by the word "the god of entertainment" so she can say "the god(s)," and not be refering to herself in 3rd person. If she's a god, that is. In other words, the subtitles could've easily said "the gods are surely kind" or "the god(not me but a different one, I'm a god too) is surely kind."

There's no ambiguity of singular or plural in terms of "who is/are the entertainment god", because we know the mythology referenced. Amenouzume is the goddess of entertainment. You are confusing multiple entities. The Goddess that hid in the cave was Amaterasu, the prime goddess of Japanese mythology, not the goddess of entertainment. The entertainment goddess is Amenouzume, who strip-danced in front of the cave to lure out Amatereasu out of her hikkikomori lol. This is a pretty famous Japanese folklore.

Regarding signs of malice in the death of the doctor: even if the examination of the bones only suggests the doctor fell from a height which caused injury severe enough to kill him, which they undoubtedly will, the fact the skeleton is found in a cave, which is impossible to be the place the landed from his fall, is enough to show the body was moved after death. The absence of predation marks on the bones indicates the body was not dragged into the cave by animals. The extent of the injury we already know means he was unable to drag himself into the cave. When it's mentioned Ai's children are soulless the way I interpret it is that if Gorou and Sarina's souls didn't occupy the twins' body Ai's child would have died at birth. There's a lot of nods to Japanese/Shinto mythology in this episode. If you're not familiar, every shrine in Japan is dedicated to a god, which is housed in the shrine. Every god has specific things that people pray to them for; good health, wisdom, prosperity, etc. The specific shrine they mention housing the goddess of entertainment, then, is where people would pray for success in entertainment. There are a _whole_ lot of shrines in Japan by the way. But I noticed you mixed up the stories in your conversation. They mention an ancient story of one of the great goddesses of Japanese mythology; Amaterasu, goddess of the sun. In the story, Amaterasu hid away in a cave and refused to come out. But she was lured out by the sound of the other gods celebrating right outside the cave. Amaterasu is not the goddess of entertainment. Great discussion as always!

Because of this the other gods trying to get her out held a party outside the cave where she locked herself in... curious she peeked out to see and another god held a mirror to her face to show how she looked, which in turn walked out the cave. Amaterasu has another brother Tsukoyomi (moon god), sometimes explicted as woman. Crows represent death in many lores abd myth.

Amaraterasu is generally considered to be the chief deity of Shinto. Her full name simply translates as The Great Goddess Who Shines in Heaven. She is one of the “Three Precious Children” of the creator God, Izanagi. One thing in particular she is associated with, that is of relevance to the series, is the illumination of hidden or secret things. Shining light in the darkness, in all the ways that can be interpreted, is one sphere of her operation. She is NOT the goddess of entertainment 😂 There are many deities in the Shinto tradition. One deity saying, “God is…” wouldn’t be at all unusual. Remember it’s a translation into English so your ideas of godhood are being evoked by the language but they aren’t relevant to the system referenced by the original language. It’s very misleading in fact. I think it has been subtitled specifically for an American audience. Crows are associated with death in a multitude of religious and folkloric systems throughout the world and birds in general are thought of as messengers between “heaven” and Earth. PS… as for moving the doctor’s body, the killer was shown standing over him as he died. I always assumed the killer hid the body. It’s also not unheard of for a human skeleton to be found intact in an open cave without having been buried, even decades after their death.

She's probably not God. In Shinto mythology there is a guide who takes the form of a crow and guides humans to the will of the Gods, they might be some sort of divine being in various interpretations. The fun thing about anime is it makes you look up everything from Shinto and Gnosticism to philosophy because otaku love including themes from these things in their stories lol. The fact she's dressed in black and her hair and eyelashes are very feather like is likely intentional as she's representing a crow that is watching over them. The crow appears all over the anime in the background of scenes so she's always been there in that form. She could probably appear as a human girl if she wants to or that's maybe her true form. From the way she speaks she's contemplating why this is God's will and not really talking about herself, probably because she knew they'd return and she was going to guide Ruby. Oh and I'd imagine the body was moved and hidden by the killer to avoid being caught as he killed the doctor in a panic after being questioned and chased. That shrine looks possibly abandoned so it'd make a good hiding place being in the middle of nowhere. We know at least the stalker had help so he could have had help in hiding that body. With Ai he was caught off guard by her words and freaked out so he never had a chance to cover his tracks.

I love seeing how several reactors believe, or have the theory, that Akane will somehow be able to figure out the whole reincarnation thing 😂. As smart as Akane is, she is also a person who is guided by logic and needs a certain amount of information before coming to a conclusion. And reincarnation and the other supernatural elements of this story certainly don't fall into the category of “logic”. Still, the funny thing is that we, the audience, aren't the only ones with this blind faith in Akane, as we will see in the next episode.

It’s reasonable for her to deduce that the body is Ruby’s sensei, and to learn that he was Gorou Amamiya. And it’d be very easy for her to learn when he disappeared, approximately if not an exact date. It’s not like that’s legally protected information. Imagine you’re Akane, and have the above knowledge, and ask yourself this: When did the Hoshino twins know Amamiya?

But now that you mention it, Akane also doesn't have enough information to figure out that the corpse she and Ruby found is the same person Aqua was looking for. For starters, Aqua never tells her that this person is already dead, instead, he asks Akane if it would be possible to find the remains of a pet.

Goro is *not* haunting Aqua. They are literally the same person. There is no Aqua. The body Goro was put in was soulless and would have died at birth if not given the soul of Goro. Aqua repeatedly refers to Aqua in third person and himself as I. Because he is Goro and Aqua is a mask that he wears. Just the symbolism in the opening. Goro is used artistically to depict his own sense of guilt. Because that is who he truly is. Aqua even identifies Guilt Goro as himself. He is guilting himself. Imagine being reincarnated and not seeing who you used to be in the mirror. Having to hide who you actually are. Having to pretend to be a normal child. This is what Aqua meant when he said "The line between myself and Aqua is disappearing." Because his mask is finally growing into who he truly is.

One thing I want to point out in many people keep mistaken (not y'all) Gorou didn't see Sarina in a romantic way. He was trying to encourage her because she was a dying patient. Because she was dying from cancer, Gorounwas trying to encourage her to gove her as much time as needed as patient who lost their will die faster than those who been givin encouragement. Sarina didn't have much more to live, but Gorou's attempt extended her life as much as it could.... especially Sarina's circumstances (which will not be explained this season).

She also assumes that Goro had disappeared for 6 months because he had gotten a girlfriend and is now back and heartbroken because he was dumped. There is a reason that was put there. Also if he saw Sarina as a daughter there was no reason for him to stop being a playboy or dating at all. There is a classical Japanese literary trope and spiritual belief that often serves as a basis for love songs: Star Crossed Lovers Reincarnated as Twins. Goro and Sarina were soul mates. They were fated to love one another. However since she was terminally ill the red string of fate brought them together too early. So they couldn't be together romantically. Which made them star crossed. If she'd been healthy and met him at 16-18 he would have been 28-30 and he would have married her. The use of tropes in media helps to give context and subtext to it so that not every detail needs to be explained. The Season 2 OP is Aqua singing about Ruby/Sarina. He can't live without her. Its why he dying was part of his revenge plan. Ai was his coping mechanism because he was given a divine directive. He was projecting Sarina onto her. Reminder that Aqua described Ai as his ideal woman and he thought Sarina shone more brightly than Ai. He also tacitly refused to deny that he would date Ai.

The anime butchered the GoroSari scene. In the manga, it is MUCH MORE emotional. Sarina has touched his right face and Gorou cried when Sarina died. Also, Ruby cried when she discovered his body.
