Honestly Aqua was so dumb like his biggest reason for self-destruction is to avoid becoming a murderer, as it would tarnish Ruby’s reputation. Yet in the end, Ruby gains fame from having a murderer father and a murdered brother. So why not just shove Hikaru off the cliff and let Ruby have a murderer brother and a murdered father instead? What’s the difference? This logic is like saying, “I, Aqua, don’t kill women or children, when clearly neither your wife is a child, nor your son is a woman". At least that way, Ruby could visit him in prison instead of being stuck now, looking like she’s lost her mind. And i'm sure if Aqua just straight up stab Hikaru he would gain sympathy from public due to Hikaru reputation being exposed by Nino
@Leafmyst

Simple, he's in subtlety shown to already feel tired living in such a laser-focused purpose of exacting revenge against their father that has ties to murder of him in his past life, as well on the idol Ai that is also his mother in his reincarnated life, while trying to endanger Ruby in the process amidst the crossfire.
@liben5052
@liben5052 Ай бұрын
@williemherbert1456 to boot, Aqua was a doctor, he had this murder hunt but all throughout oshi no ko you see how he cares about the lives around him, and how his main purpose for hunting down their father anyways was because he was a threat to Ruby's life. And the exhaustion is a good point, bro lived two life times. He was a middle aged man in his first and didn't have dreams of being an entertainer. He was just a protector from beginning to end, and it's not like he knew the consequences before he made the decision. Lastly, ruby's father being a murderer doesn't affect her so much when she had 0 known contact with him, but she lived her whole life with her brother. It's not fair, but society would criticize her for "not seeing the signs" or having a "completely deranged family" if half of the members of her immediately family were murderers
@phobics9498
@phobics9498 Ай бұрын
@@liben5052 His purpose has "always" been that? What are you talking about? His main purpose for hunting down his father has never until the very end been to protect anyone. It was pure hate. Did you not watch the ending of the prologue? Did that look like the gaze of someone out on a quest of heroic sacrifice? Hell no. The show and manga literally never paints Aqua in a good light. If you seriously believe this I feel like you missed the entire point. Hikaru being a potential threat was revealed incredibly late for Aqua. The ending just deletes his entire moral dilemma of kill or not to kill by ensuring he has a rational reason to kill his father. The entire story turns from "man struggles with his purpose in life" to "man waits for information to be revealed which enables him to see his moral dilemma was actually very simple!". I felt like the manga was going a bit off after the dark ruby arc but I feel like Hikaru being introduced by killing someone should have signalled it would end like this. I can see Aqua's logic in why he did what he did. I think the fault lays on the story for making that decision the logical one. It's like the ending bails out Aqua from having to make a hard decision...

So if you break up the kanji for "oshi" you get characters that can be read as "suishi" which means "death by drowning". the brackets, which give an effect of boxing in the title, are formally part of the title as presented. This means that the title can be read as [suishi no ko] which means "The Child Who Died by Drowning" which is inside of a box (coffin).

This is a surprisingly common thing for manga. Prison school had something similar where the author just went "I don't like that this is popular and I don't like people who like this." and then decided to end it poorly only then to come crawling back to it because in his case the only successful work he had was prison School, That's the annoying thing about this guy is it isn't like the only successful thing he has is Oshi no ko so he's talented enough to make more but it's like there's a genuine disdain for his own work. And because of how consistent the ending problems are you can't put that on "he just doesn't know how to end a story." For me personally I did not enjoy the ending because yes it was rushed. And it's not a satisfying ending in any way, it would be one thing if it wrapped everything up that needed to be wrapped up all the strings that were left hanging are dealt with and you end it like that. Ok that's all right but he didn't do that and it almost feels spiteful.
@lostnemesis
@lostnemesis Ай бұрын
This is just some replies I've seen about the story. From T. Akana should be smarter than aqua and was prepared to die for him, but it didn't happen. (I don't agree with the smarter thing a but so dogmatic to die for him absolutely and that would have been an arguably even more fucked up ending for aqua if he was trying to stop that. I think that is one where if he committed to it it would have been surprising that he committed to it and also it could have resulted in a very interesting ending) Kana's character ark with aqua is trashed a couple chapters before the ending, Aquas death was a weak plot point, Imagine promising his beloved sister to not end up like their mother who has to lie all her life and that she is happy and having fun only to end up like her in the end because aqua thought dying will protect Ruby, Side characters are forced to be happy until the end because the writer is a psychopath. (That is just funny) From Jay. Funny. Still leaves above jjk and mha ending, From Shuraine. So, Oshi No Ko's ending has been disappointing to say the least. Now, Aka Akasaka has not one, but 2 insanely popular manga's that he somehow butchered due to rushed he wrote the ending. But that is not whats important right now... I honestly dont care if this ended as a tragedy, but the way Aka did it is just so BUNS. Like, i wouldn't have mind if it was well written, but like its not. Its like it is put there as a "Shock Value". And that's not all, cuz Hikaru (Father of Aqua and Ruby) is literally fucking shitly written, she has been going back to being good, then goes back to being the villain for the sake of the plot twist. It just became so forced after Aka did that. Not only that, but God crow girl is literally the one of the most useless piece of plot device added to the story, it didnt even add narrative to this shit we didnt learn about the reincarnation which is honestly disappointing. Also Aka literally wasted like 70+ chapters of Aqua's development for the sake of this SHIT ENDING. He was questioning his revenge and stuff for that duration of the chapter and when he finally made up his mind, it was honestly a pretty great thing. But Aka literally threw that shit to the Lava. It was all useless. Lastly, my Kana problem. I was not a Kana glazer by any means, but it was honestly shitty. Aka was giving us hints in the final arc about the possibility of romantic relationship between Kana and Aqua, but like you already know by now the ending happened which made the entire development storyline of Kana built upon that point, useless. Aka Akasaka, you are one of my favorite romance authors and you did not deliver on this one. You're Kaguya-sama ending was shit but its was acceptable, but this one is just utter ASS. Rushed, destroyed the already built plot points, and destroyed character that has been built up to that point. What the actual fuck. Short explanation: Ending is ass and destroyed a lot of character development that Aka did for those character. The ending also left a ton of plot holes that Aka put and didnt address. One guy who just has a random username who ends up saying he's just here to laugh at the fans, And then a boatload of people like straight up I see about a dozen people straight going. what is it with this trend of shity endings. this was peak until it crashed straight into the dumpster. people read to escape life and here's the fucking MC fumbling worse than me. if you come here to read this crap guys don't bother it has so many plot holes and the author knows how to destroy manga. And one reply that has a lot more interaction than the main comment because the main comment is about people will think this is just an okay ending in a few years the reply is. People are disappointed because we know the potential it has. But because of the mangakas incompetence we get this shity conclusion, aqua will be remembered as an edgy MC who thinks he's dying will save the story but nah he's just edgy with main characters syndrome, I can keep going but honestly it's just sad seeing so many people disappointed with the ending.

I feel like ppl who do that are simply wasting everyone's time and resources to literally pour their hatred into something that ppl love, to provide some childishly arrogant point of view, that will never ever be accepted by the general public, especially once they find out they did it for personal reasons. Even after Anno got those death threats, he killed practically everyone in Evangelion and though I liked that movie, I can easily understand that ppl still hated him after that movie, because what he did wasn't justified nor the right thing to do. You don't waste millions or production facilities to take personal stabs at what ppl like or what they have said, because that's simply an abuse of status/power and no one should ever tolerate that level of arrogant behaviour. I know he holds resentment for his new manga being axed, but that doesn't justify him screwing over Oshi, and I wish some of the fans defending his badly written endings would see that. We want ppl to do better, not worse, and some fanboys really cannot live with that for some reason (it's as if those fanboys think of themselves as "true" fans, and us wanting better somehow makes us non true fans/bad folks).

Naruto, Bleach, Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan, Yu Yu Hakusho, The Promised Neverland just off the top of my head. Contrary to popular belief, I think the problems of Oshi no Ko were evident for a long time. I can’t really get why ppl think these bad endings come out nowhere. The only story I got invested in was MHA, and even I could tell it was going downhill. The reason? In an interview it was discovered the creator changed his story to align with reader polls over time, which explained why the best parts of it disappeared and ended the way it did. Star Vs is another example of something whose terrible ending was in the cards. The flaws that plagued its ending was in its first season. It just became more overt over time as the creator as given more freedom. OnK is the same. It’s even more obvious knowing that it was likely inspired by Om Shanti Om, and Aka probably figured Ai Hoshino killing Hikaru as a ghost was a bad ending lol. Basically, OnK fans are huffing copium. I can’t really blame them since ignoring the flaws until it becomes unsalvageable is kinda typical for any person, but this was inevitable.

Oshi no Ko honestly feels like that as well especially since the direction it was heading was Ruby x Aqua but it abruptly changed due to backlash (atleast thats what it felt like) and maybe caused it to go downhill since then. The main reason why people don't talk about these issues until the very end is because they are unable to form their opinion on whether the story was turning bad or not without fully reading it. Another thing is that when stories end the flaws become visible and much more noticeable to the readers and its quite unfair to say readers are stupid for not realizing it sooner. The story builds all these expectations for the readers yet it crumbles under its own pressure which leads to flops endings like these.

We can only pray that either the anime fixes all these inconsistencies and pacing issues, and make the ending less rushed, or Aka can pull a Horikoshi and release some bonus chapters (I doubt this) that can give a sense of closure to the ending. I am optimistic so far. S2 was very good though I was surprised how much it covered. I expected it to just cover the tokyo blade arc fully but it went further. I don't know how good the coverage was compared to manga as I read tokyo blade more than a year ago but it was still quite good. In the manga I did kind of feel like dark ruby arc was rushed and resolved way too quickly though I did still like it quite a bit. I wonder what the anime will do with all of this. Even tho I'm a Kana fan, I do think that in the whole Oshi no Ko the only important for the plot thing she did was joining B-Komachi. Everything build up with her was thrown off a cliff (just like Aqua ROFL). I'm not saying that Aqua dying would be bad regardless of the execution of that in the manga. Author could give his death a lot more weight, but he just ignored the buildup, rather than using it to enhance the ending he wanted. So a big part of plot points became Bondarchuk's guns (google it)

I stopped reading Oshi no Ko earlier on but I still kept up with the reactions because I had friends who read. Going on twitter and the subreddit after the ending and seeing next to no one happy about the way it ended was crazy. At least if it had been a polarizing ending there would have been some discussions on the merits or how in line the ending was with core themes but it was like the entire fanbase united against it. That kind of fandom unity is equally crazy and funny. As an outsider looking in, it always felt like he wanted a tragedy and planned for some kind of tragic ending but getting from Point A to Point B was a struggle between deadlines, unexpected popularity, and actually writing a plot that made such an ending viable. I also think that he and his editors need to work on him pivoting towards new series while in the final stages of his current ones but thats another can of worms.

The big issue with oshi no ko for me is that it wants to be a dark look at the entertainment industry a la perfect blue, but it doesn't actually have any systemic critiques, so all it can do is have an Evil Guy to get rid of. i dropped it after the arc with the cosplayer, because at that point i realized akasaka had nothing useful to say about the industry as a whole. if higher ups take advantage of entertainers they should just say sorry. and the exploited should just shut up and take it, complainers are the real problem. just a terrible, worthless way of dealing with the problems in the entertainment industry, and a super flimsy thematic structure to build a finale on. the core problem with idols and idol culture is that there's a Guy who Sucks and he's Really Sneaky so we gotta get rid of him. then it will be Good and Pure because the Bad Guy will be gone. bleh

Literally the worst element (besides the pacing) is Hikaru, he's like the catalyst for the story and he's hardly in it, in the movie arc characters imagine how he maybe felt when he was with Ai but like that's not a real way to characterize someone. Seriously they just assume everything, go to the stupid beach, and then show him the movie suddenly and try to make him feel bad I guess. And after all that utter nonsense, he's just a lying psycho anyway like we already knew because we briefly saw him kill that one girl many chapters ago. If he wasn't go to be important to the story why would you make one of the driving factors of the plot revenge!!! I can't believe some people actually felt bad for Hikaru during that insanely stupid confrontation, I didn't buy a single line or panel of him because it just felt like it was all a lie and a big giant waste of time. This is your protagonist and antagonist meeting for the first time and it felt in real time as I was reading it like it didn't matter...... ughhhhhhh...... I'm going to be complaining about this story for a while because of how truly awful the crash was. The train had derailed around chapter 100ish, wobbled dangerously all during the movie arc, outright fell off a cliff during the beach chapters, and drowned for the remaining chapters till it finally sunk just like Aqua.

Like if Ruby got hurt because of Hikaru and he saved Ruby with his own hands that, in a way, makes him not regret his past of not being able to save Ai. It isn’t a Japan obsession, let’s not pretend plenty of other stories don’t have their own bad endings. In Japan it happens more often simply cuz the authors are rushed. They have to make new chapters within a short time frame or to fit for an anime adaptation. They are overworked and that means they don’t have the luxury to prepare their endings. Having a tragic ending to a story is fine; if done well, a tragedy offers catharsis for the reader. But having a tragic ending without setting and building up to that ending is not. As people noted, Aka could have easily ended the story in less chapters in a satisfactory enough manner yet purposely chose the tragedy route. Yet he didn't do enough prior set-up to make the tragic ending feel an acceptable way to end the series either, leading to what poorly executed ending we got. To cite from Terrible Writing Advice on endings, essentially the ending does not need to be perfect; rather, it should be the most natural, emotionally resonant, or logical one possible, since a predictable ending is better than a poorly-executed twist ending. "Because if you try something fancy and screw up, readers will probably remember the botched ending more than the well-run marathon."

Also Aqua killing himself was pointless anyway since Nino’s confession led to the discovery of other accomplices, which ties to Hikaru being the mastermind behind the deaths of different idols. The pattern of Hikaru gaslighting people into becoming killers would start to emerge when they all tell the same story of how Hikaru was their friend and how they couldn’t let Ai be surpassed as an idol. Hell, we’re introduced to Hikaru murdering an idol and framing it as an accident. He would definitely be charged for at least one death. But oh well, Aqua decides to take of it himself because only he can deal with his father for all the bad things he’s done. This is after Akane and co. saved Ruby from being murdered by Nino but tragedy’s gotta happen I guess. A story is tragic when death happens in spite of MC doing the right thing. When death happens because MC decides murder-suicide was the best option when better ones were clearly available, it just becomes a farce.

There's a difference between a ending that does not suit your tastes (shipping, characters developed...happy ending vs tragic ending) but fulfill its promises and explores its theme like MHA or Erased, and shitty ending that fails his promises and throw their themes to the trash can... One that has lost itself in its theme and ends up giving something you're not quite sure what was the point the author wanted to make (Attack on Titan) and an ending that had bad undertones from the very beginning and revealed its garbage at the end. For me Oshi no ko is the latter. Right from the beginning there are things that made me only look from a distance / from time to time at how the situation evolved...and then the last few chapters dropped I wasn't surprised. Honestly Aqua felt like a male Mary Sue you could find in a 12 years old's fanfic. (and I say that as a fanfic author myself, you have to start SOMEWHERE what baffles me is that the author is a professional and edited with this level)

While i completely understand why someone would hate the ending for being rushed and unfulfilling, I also see how it can be equated to the entertainment industry and the endless cycle that it is. Aqua ultimately got what he wanted in the end, and Ruby did to, just probably not in the way they inotially intended. Aqua dies (again) and Ruby has to smile and lie just like her mom.

Idk that feels really cheap to me. They could've handled it better and showed more of Ruby but Aka just ignores her character throughout the entire story up until the final part. I would've liked how she ended up like Ai and her thought process and how she processes everything that has happened and same thing for Kana and Akane as well. I don't hate the idea of it coming back full circle if it wasn't handled like how its been handled.

i knew as soon as they introduced the weird incest plotline (the aqua-ruby kiss and kinda the weirdness with aqua and his own mom, though that's a bit more complicated) that this series was finished 😭 I also feel like the reincarnation plotline added too much fantasy to (what mostly felt like) a realistic series, but I love Sarina as a character so idk. Also, if I'm being completely honest, after Kaguya-sama's ending and ofc OnK's ending, I'm not really sure I can hype myself up for any of Aka's creations... Unless he gets to design another IA (vocaloid) voicebank I guess lol

I honestly didn't hate Kaguya's ending at all. A lot of looming time bombs were coming and he paid them off about as well as you could want. Only part I didn't like was the implied Ishigami pairing with Iino, but I attribute that to basic thinking on a side ship and not noticing how the ship doesn't work on multiple levels.

It really was that simple huh? Not only that the door theory, how Ai and Ruby was together on the other side of the door, telling Ruby to stay away. But also, how the name, "Aqua-Marine", referring to how he will end up (The way he died in this case)? Same goes with "Ruby", becoming a precious gem, that will glow the brightest in the dark.

I think its weird for people to say 'this manga/anime has a terrible ending' when it's usually people who have built a headcanon or expectation on how it SHOULD end not how the creator intends it to. Yes there have been times in the past where the mangaka has deliberately sabotaged the series (to love ru, prison school etc) but I dont feel it's that was with the majority. The creator of oshi no ko did not expect it to find as much success as it did and that puts a lot of pressure on creators. Just accept things for how they are instead of how you think they should be
@Leafmyst
@Leafmyst Ай бұрын
You are missing the entire point of the video... The whole reason why I made this video is that the whole entire plotlines of each of the characters was abandoned in the end. It is quite literally an objectively bad ending. Stories that do well generally answer questions that the story itself brings to readers. Even though I hate how Aqua died, it doesn't mean I couldn't have enjoyed it either. The story could've been handled in a way that leads to logical and fulfilling ending rather than abrupt switch where everything started crumbling down after a certain breaking point. The whole argument of how "the creator didn't expect their work to be this successful" is stupid as well... I think most of the successful mangakas, if not every successful people in the world, never expected their works to be this big but managed to create a masterpiece that left readers satisfied in the end. Plus its not like the author didn't have any time either. Aka Akasaka had a lot of breaks between OnK and had the vision for how the story should conclude but the execution of it was horrible. The ending feels like it was rushed so that he could pursue his new work and completely forget about the series that had so many people invested in.

What is irking the shit out of me at this moment in time, is how we're seeing fans with reasonable takes on why said manga/anime have simply tripped and failed, and then we're seeing the fanboys making up excuse after excuse as to why said anime has "good" endings, or why being mid is okay (seriously, it's not, if you think mid is okay, then by that logic everything can be mid and thus failure cannot exist, which is batshit stupid logic to snowball towards). It's okay to fail, but it's another if everyone keeps repeating or emulating it in unison, and we're seeing the latter happening in spades these past few years. I know Jump/Netflix and others are creating long-term issues for authors and their IP's, but something has got to give. Either the companies need to fire their superiors who don't know how to actually manage a studio to allow for good stories to be told, or they need to support the studios properly and set superior deadlines that aren't so airtight, as well as giving the artists/writers the space they need to actually produce a start, a middle and a good ending. Also some folks need to stop trying to fail upwards (yes this is becoming a trend these days, writers and such can actually fail upwards if tolerated enough, instead of going back and learning to do better or simply knowing when to bow out).
@Leafmyst

@@Leafmyst I'm old, so I only just learned what that phrase meant last year lol, but yeah, I don't think we should tolerate "just average" storytelling, because then we don't get books like LotR or HP, or HP Lovecraft, etc. People will likely get confused by my stance, but I don't tolerate average, because I know we can do better, and our species thrives on competition and a genuine strive to want to improve, so settling for less and less each time is regressive and defeating (which can also lead to depression for some, like writers for example). Also don't let anyone tell you to "lower your expectations", because that's a weak soft excuse for "just settle for average/lesser quality", and people like that are often defeatist in nature (I'm not saying ask for the moon, but I'm being realistic in wanting things to just get better instead of not at all).

Nah, I would rather the studio not adapt it at all. Mangakas need to learn a lesson regarding this stuff, especially since he wasn't even the artist, only the writer. He doesn't need any more residuals and royalties than what he's already received. That safety net of his made him half ãss and even give up on his own series. This is awful.
