Akane ran into Kana during her downward spiral. Kana was barely scraping by taking whatever jobs she could, sacrificing her acting, and she hated it. Akane reminded Kana of what she used to be like and Akane was still pure and innocent, not tarnished by the industry, and it just highlighted how much Kana hated what she had become, which is why she got mad. And for Akane's side, she always admired the old Kana and wants to save her in a way, by making her become her real self again instead of always sacrificing herself for everyone and letting herself be a disposable tool out of fear of being abandoned, like she did during Sweet Today. Kana is Akane's idol.

Even when Kana is given the spotlight (Sweet Today) she still holds back. Because she's afraid if she shines too much everyone will ditch her again. She gives up her passion for acting her best for the sake of others. Which arguably is a good idea for the overall production, but for Kana it is done out of fear.

People abandoned her because of her bad attitude, which still present. She thought she was the best, and getting outshined by Aqua made her afraid, realizing she's replaceable. Insecurities ate into her self-esteem and it affected her work. Himekawa is the opposite, dude a slob but mentally stable enough and is sought after because of skills.

Kana lost her fame and job because she was hard to work with when she was a child so now as the director and fellow actors described her now she is easy to work with. So she thought maybe fighting with Akane head on would make her hard to work with just like her old self.

Kana's current situation is a bit like the chef from menu. The original thing she liked about acting was shining bright and getting into the moment, but what people wanted from her wasn't it. She learend to kill her ego to keep doing what she likes, but to do that she had to give up the part that made her like it in the first place. Like how the chef in the Menu first started cooking just to make people simply full and satisfied, but after becoming a famous chef he had to keep doing sacrilegious and meaningless "artistry" to give people what they asked him for.

That's pretty much my take on it too. She would love to shine, but she's so scared of losing the stage/screen itself that she'll accept being support. Not really giving up, but not willing to risk the boat.

At least from my interpretation of it because all the stuff after akane saying that she can act in a way that makes everyone around her fade is new to me so I havent fully digested and analyzed it, but kana wanted to compete and give it her all to beat akane but because kana hadnt completely gotten over her inferiority complex and self loathing once she saw akane completely outshine she felt defeated and gave up competing no matter how much she wanted to beat her. At least speaking from personal experience from my running career no matter how much I wanted to push my self sometimes someone passing me or id lose a group I was trying to keep up with id just mentally give up.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Kana is such a great and dynamic character. I still don't feel like she's "given up" but maybe "accepted" is a good word? She's still trying, and she's still hopeful, but she's... Okay not rocking the boat... My take at least.

I don't think that she gave up or felt defeated by Akane's performance, but rather that she's painfully aware of her role to the point of forbearance. It comes down to their acting styles and the clash of what they think is the right way to act. Kana used to be a star, but due to her declining popularity and loss of jobs as she grew up, she adopted a more subdued and flexible acting style to survive in which she became obsessed with matching the people around her and being easy to work with. She had to constantly hold herself back by essentially playing nice and doing the right thing by putting the production first before her own wishes, killing her ego. Akane is acting like Kana used to do in the past where she puts herself first and wants to bring the old Kana back, but because of Kana's past, she's reluctant to act out and restrains herself to doing the "correct" thing in the moment which is to let Akane's performance shine.

@@TheGenreVerse I think both words apply because she gave up on competing with akane because she was extremely adamant about outshining her before but now took the role of supporting her light but its also her accepting the role the industry as pushed her into of working with others and whats best of the show instead of trying to do whats best for her acting career. I think the confusion comes from kana and akane having different ideas on what they are competing on. Kana thinks akane hates her more adaptive and dynamic style of acting in comparison to akanes more immersive, were in actuality akane hates how she falls in line and matches even with those worse then her instead of how she used to be and the type of acting akane seems to now follow of trying to be in the spotlight and be the standard and have others match her

Kana has fear of abandonment. That fear is connected to feeling of confidence or showing off. So she closes up when the spotlight comes. Her attitude also doesn't help that she say mean things and lash out when emotional.
