I've been struggling with the concept of osmotic pressure for the longest time! I could never get the explanation of movement of water from low solute concentration to high solute concentration to stick. But with the way you explained the water moving down its osmotic potential gradients, it was so simple and logical! it was like a light bulb went on in my head! THANK YOU!

ok in simple layman terms can somebody please explain to me why osmosis occurs? why does the water chase the solutes? I have been wondering for years why putting solutes one one side of a semi permeable membrane causes water to move across. why does water "want" to "dilute the solutes" its been bugging me for so long thank you for any answer
@jermogofficial5 жыл бұрын
thank you this kicked my ass cuz I had no idea what it was until now!
@jejeoluwatimilehin89182 жыл бұрын
Great teaching here! My confusion is still in if the osmotic potential is water potential. From the resources I have, it is said that osmotic potential is also referred to as solute potential, which is the ability of a solution to draw in water from pure water owing to its (solution"s) high solute content. From this, it means osmotic/solute potential is inversely proportional to water potential, i.e., if the osmotic/solute potential of a medium is low, then it has a high water potential. Is this correct? I think the issue is that we sometimes want to use "osmotic"'in place of water
@alexandroochoa58587 жыл бұрын
Your video was very helpful, thinking about water moving because of a potential difference is very useful! Just wanted to clarify tho, doesn't the water have to be at rest in order for you to properly measure the hydrostatic pressure?
@wonderstruck.4 жыл бұрын
You can also think of osmotic potential as the concentration gradient of water! Water is simply moving down its own gradient, from a high concentration of water to a low concentration of water.

Is there any way to roughly calculate osmotic pressure difference housing only hydrostatic pressure differences? The problem I am trying to solve involves a grid dividing a U tube into two compartments. One compartment is just water and the other is water and a protein that is too big to cross the grid. The only information I am given is how hydrostatic pressure changes over time
