Namely me.) Scooby - Heart (If the gang ever really breaks up, they normally get back together because of Scooby. Yes, they value the bonds they have with each other, but Scooby is usually the one to go and nudge them on the arm so they want to make up.) Velma - Smart Person (Again, duh) Daphne - Big Guy (This is the one that rocked me. Anyone else notice that any time the gang gets into a real physical altercation, Daphne's the one who handles it? Shaggy's too scared, Fred solves problems with his mind and traps not physical fights, Velma thinks more than she fights, and if Scooby fights it's for laughs rather than to show his strength. In defense of Sherlock Holmes' place as S-Tier. He was literally the pioneer for an entire literary genre for an investigative technique that didn't even exist yet. It's like rating the works of Jules Verne, Isaac Asimov, and H.G. Wells as bad Sci-fi for not really knowing science like we know it today. Additionally, I think there might be symptoms of Seinfeld Syndrome at work here. There are so many tropes that started here and were copied by so many people that they look bad once you look at the source material that started it all. But maybe I'm just biased... okay, I'm definitely biased. I love the works of Sir Doyle, and I grew up reading Sherlock.
@feltrix3343 жыл бұрын
Also definitely biased, but I feel like Sherlock is to this list what Kronk was to the himbo list. SO MUCH of detective literature has been shaped by the character that it feels wrong not to put him at the top.
@tskmaster38373 жыл бұрын
In this tier list, Sherlock isn't a regular Sherlock. He's good... damn, just the two talk about Sherlock makes me wince. "For the time..." My own favorite show of Holmes deduction skills is at the start of Hound of the Baskervilles when he describes the visitor only from the cane he left behind. Watson told us everything he saw, Holmes told us everything we missed. But to call him out for such things with "It's not detective work, it's just observation... with style!" is kind of petty. Holmes is a consutling detective and he's best there is, in fact he's the only one who is. The rest are, you know, ACTUAL professional detectives. I wouldn't go as far to say it was just Holmes' hobby but I would say it was his passion for which he received some compensation from time to time.
@chrisrudolf98393 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. If we are talking about detectives as a literary trope, Sherlock Holmes is THE detective and therefore belongs into S tier. The Sherlock Holmes novels were the first crime novels that fully followed the detective as he figured out the crime and were written to make the reader try to solve the riddle alongside the detective. Not all of the stories did it equally good and I get that he is not necessarily everyones favorite character, but beside of founding the whole genre, he is brilliant and most of the time very convincingly written as brilliant.

Also, very disappointed Morse didn't make the list, as lead detective of one of the longest runnning and highly rated serious detective dramas ever.

Love the show when it was on Cartoon Network right with lupin the third, really hated when adult swim pulled both off the schedule. That said case closed did start to get a bit stale in my opinion when some of the cases already show who the murderer is at the start, yes I know other shows and media did it too it just felt out of place in case closed, along with having some that get rather ridiculous or convoluted, like the early stuff you can start to pick apart as well and understand how it happens when later on it’s just…..huh???

I would say he is a good enough Detective, im just not sure if the writing is as good as it sounds. There is often a Gimmick and Conan just happen to know trivialfacts about exactly that Field. Archery, Shogi, Stonegardens, how Phones work, Flagsignals.. Its not very fair if you don't know anything about this specific Themes. The Number of Suspects is often pretty limited to, and its not very clear why Conan considers only these People as Suspects. Im thinking of one specific Case here. Also Murderer get away whit some dangerous Shit, most of the Time based around Strings, or no one is comming in at the right Time. Like Murder at a public Toilet. It does not realy make the Detective worse, and the Storys are nice for a limited Time, its just not the best type of Story.

So what happened to the “married couple as detectives” trope? Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence (Thomas & Prudence Beresford)? Nick & Nora Charles? These are two examples that gave birth to later variations of this theme like the classic TV show Hart-to-Hart. On the subject of Batman's inconsistency as a detective, there was a fun mini-series (maxi-series? Idk terminology; it was the 12 issue run where Alfred shot a cannibal in the face from point blank range and then told Bruce he'd never find all the guns hidden around the Manor) called "Grave of the Bat," or "Batman's Grave," or something like that with Grave in it. It starts out with Batman getting to do some really fun detective work that was in that zone of partly forensic, partly psychological profiling. It was really good. By the end it had become more of the "Batman gets to punch things and zap them with his fun toys," thing that dominates most Batman stuff nowadays, but there was a thread of real detective work throughout as he did have to figure out both the motive of the guy causing trouble in Gotham, as well as who they were. And the best part was, it wasn't an already established member of his rogues gallery, so he actually got to do detectiving. Very much recommend it, if you can find it.

Surprised that Conan Edogawa aka Shinichi Kudo from detective Conan isn’t on the list, personally I’d put him at around maybe high B to low A. He’s an interesting character that definitely shows an intellect that’s inspired by Sherlock Holmes, which is funny cause in one episode there’s like a fan club group for the Conan Doyle books and he just starts acting as lively as a little kid about the topic of Sherlock Holmes, that said there are times where he does drop the ball or despite on how good of a detective he is it would take him longer than expected to figure something out, I get it pacing and running time of an episode will do that, but it does get annoying as time goes on in the series.
@ccnyao98063 жыл бұрын
I was also surprised that he wasn’t put on the list, or maybe he was but they were never able to get there. I don’t remember which detective they were talking about but I find it interesting that sometimes Conan will get those Eureka moments when he’s stuck on a missing piece of the mystery until another character speaks up on something that’s not completely related to the mystery but low key is in some way or another. Definitely feels like an A

I ADORE the concept behind Detective Conan, I managed to watch over 600 episodes just because of that, but to know that that there's actually a plot that simply refuses to move forward for hundred and hundred of episodes (and tons of movies), it simply gets too tiresome to wait for actual development.

Gumshoes detective skills are best seen in one of his themes names and that’s “I can do it when it counts, pal!” He so often does not hit it on the nail but he can… sometimes.
@Bobb118813 жыл бұрын
Consider: Dexter Morgan, Richard Castle, Kaname Date, the Doctor, the SVU, Misty Knight, Osmosis Jones himself, Carmelita Fox, Team Chaotix, Pennington from Paper Mario, and Cole Phelps. Of the ones I'm qualified to speak on, I'd say Date is a solid B. He solves a few mysteries during the game, and he's pretty much spot-on with everything he deduces, except for that one thing. He solves the mystery the best he can when you consider that key details are being hidden from him, and when he finally gets said details he solves the mystery really quickly. He's also the only Team Zero Escape protagonist to actually figure anything out in his game without being told by the culprit except for arguably Junpei in 999 and Diana in ZTD. The only thing that holds Date back is that his emotions occasionally get in the way of rational thinking, and he does consider abandoning the case a couple times because he's horny, but that part's not even really his fault. The Doctor can range anywhere from A to C depending on the incarnation. Doctor Who mysteries also fall into that area where the audience isn't presented with enough information, more often than not. It's kind of weird that Osmosis Jones isn't on the list, considering that Indigo mentioned him. Solid A. He's reckless, but he's also the only one who ever figured out what Thrax is up to, and it's implied that Thrax has already killed at least a dozen people. Carmelita... C. She's way too fixated on Sly, and she often misses out on the bigger threats because of it. She also only ever manages to take down criminals that Sly already left beaten up for her. The ending of the second game implied that she was letting go of her obsession with Sly and opening up to the idea of working with him, but the third game reset her character development completely, and ironically made her more obsessed with catching him than ever. And as far as I'm concerned, the fourth game doesn't exist. Again, kinda weird that Team Chaotix isn't on the list, given the big conversation about Sonic. I'd assume someone in chat would've mentioned them. I'd say B. Vector is easily the best detective of the bunch. The way he goes about figuring out that Eggman was the one who hired them in Heroes is good. Had future games expanded upon their detective skills, they could easily be an A, but it's totally forgotten about after Shadow and now they don't do anything at all. Pennington is an F, and I really don't think I need to explain why. Cole Phelps is in a weird area. The nature of the game makes it so that he's only as good a detective as you are, but in-story he's easily an A. The only cases he ever gets wrong are during the homicide desk and arson desk, and even then he keeps every avenue of investigation open and eventually catches the real culprit. For all those cases he does get wrong, a major factor is that the higher-ups are pressuring him into not following the avenues that would lead to the real culprit. The homicide desk is where his detective skills truly shine, even though he gets the wrong guy most of the time. In certain cases, he does actually believe that the suspect he's currently chasing is the culprit, but it's only because the evidence points that way, and even then he holds onto the possibility that it's the same killer for all the crimes.

A point against the BAU that doesn't get brought up, in a ridiculous number of episodes they reach a point where they state out loud that they can't investigate further until someone else gets killed. Miss Marple is a lot better than B tier, I think the problem is going by the clips on Red's detective video she's only seen the 2000's series and that was a bloody awful depiction, the earlier Joan Hickson series from the mid 1980's does the character far more justice, showing a far subtler character and in episodes like Nemesis hints at a far more ruthless character with a deeper background than appearances would first suggest. He's easily flustered and outsmarted by the androids and comes of more as a working-man who has a dangerous job out of desperation and his most impressive skill is bailing himself out of tight spots. In context it makes sense because previous android models were stupid and mostly gave up when found so all they needed was a single-minded hunter who can read a Voight Kampff test. Edit: The finale where he assaults the android hideout really shows this, especially from Isidore's perspective who just sees a scary predator stalking through the dark.
