Osprey Aura AG 65 Backpack review
I took the Osprey Aura AG 65 liter backpack on my 17 day Pacific Crest Trail trip. I hadn't worn it much before that, so I really got to test it out on the trip. It is an awesome backpack, and I recommend an Osprey pack for everyone, whether it be a backpacking trip or a day hike!!!

great review and yes, a great pack, too! personally, i like the versatility of those side pockets with the holes. coupled with the nearby straps, they provide additional options for carrying longish medium-size stuff sack items, such as camp chair (mine is a Monarch) or a sleeping pad (mine is a Sea-to-Summit ultralight). hike on!!

I love the backpack, the only issue I have with it is its weight. At 4 lbs it makes it VERY hard to cut down your base weight to be ultra-light.

Unfortunately, the Osprey aura, and other ospreys I tried were so uncomfortable on my hips. I’m short with a short torso. I ended up going for the Gregory maven which fits my torso perfectly, and has tons of pockets. I had noticed in my hikes that the ospreys fit taller people better, for shorter people it’s the Gregory maven.

@HikeOregon
@HikeOregon 6 жыл бұрын
+Anne Wu it’s probably not worth making a video about. I just fill up a large plastic tub (or you could do it in the shower tub too) and add some Dr. Bronner’s soap and then let the backpack soak for a while before hand washing certain dirty areas like the straps and stuff. Then just hang it to dry.

thanks for the video! I always heard, that the heavy stuff should be close to the shoulders and back and the bottom of the backpack should carry the light stuff like sleeping bag etc..
@HikeOregon
@HikeOregon 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, my sleeping bag sits at the bottom and then I have my tent, clothes bag, cooking supplies in the middle and my food bag goes at the top near my shoulders. You don’t want anything heavy above your shoulders because it’ll mess up your center of gravity.

HI , I have an ATMOS 65 that is very similar except it is the one prior to the AG .That strap you called an ice pick holder is actually one of two tether points for your trekking poles there is a lower one that is near the rear and is covered with clear vinyl, the top adjustable tether has a small picture of two trekking poles , well should I say mine does but yours should be the same , GREAT REVIEW , THANKYOU !

Yes I have. But I can't justify getting another pack for at least another 10 years. lol. I just bought the Osprey one last summer and it was very expensive. The thing I don't like about zpack is that they don't have a lot of pockets and ways to organize. That's one of the key points for me about the Osprey is that is has SOOO many pockets and places to store stuff.

@HikeOregon
@HikeOregon 7 жыл бұрын
Yea, I was carrying all sorts of camera equipment, more water than was necessary, up to 6 days worth of food, and I don't have ultra-light gear. So it adds up to 40 lbs pretty quick. But as the days go on and I ate more, that would dwindle. I think 10 lbs of what was food. I had no issues with the weight.
@GrottoGroveGroves
@GrottoGroveGroves 7 жыл бұрын
i bet the camera equipment does add weight quick . water can be tricky. i try not to carry much. but never want to be thirsty. luckily where i'm at now, has no issue with water so i can get by with about a liter, never more than two here. glad you carry the weight with no issues. subscribed .so get to posting those hike videos !

What size did you get and what size are you? I’m 5’3 and weigh 120 lb. I have a small waist so not sure if I should get the xs. Thanks!
@HikeOregon
@HikeOregon 6 жыл бұрын
I had the Small and I had the torso length extended all the way. I am 5’5 and around 125 lbs. the sizing was great for me and you can adjust the torso length to be smaller. The only thing is the hip belt was almost at its smallest which unfortunately doesn’t make a difference with the XS size as it has the same length hip belt. I would go into an outfitter and try one on, but my guess is you’ll want a Small.

@Hike Oregon am now looking at Atmos 65AG. It is mostly getting good reviews. Although there seems to be one recurring complaint. The anti gravity mesh that extends into the hip belt. Creates a sore spot on some peoples hips due to the cable that runs along the top and bottom inside the the belt. I take it these cables give the belt structure and support. Have you had the same experience with this pack?
@HikeOregon

Do you bike on trails? I like this pack and was wondering if the size or weight distribution would not do you well for bicycling to your camp site. I know Osprey makes bike specific packs, but they don't have room for all the camping gear (sleeping pad, sleeping bag, tent). Thanks in advance!

+RudyVII7 I Mountain bike but not with a pack. You would definitely want to get a smaller one, but you could go with a backpacking pack for sure. Mine is 65 liters which will make you feel very top heavy if its full. Get a 45 liter one at most.

How much weight can you carry comfortably in this pack?
@HikeOregon
@HikeOregon 7 жыл бұрын
+Sarah Maxe max I carried was 42 lbs. this pack carries weight very comfortably. But it really depends on how well your legs can handle the weight. The most I'd be willing to carry is 45 lbs. but this pack could easily handle 50-60 lbs if you were snow camping or something and needing to pack that much. Keep in mind, it's much more enjoyable to carry less weight. Right now my base weight is 18 lbs and it feels amazing!!!!

The new updated 2018 models have the rain cover with them. This is exactly the same as my pack and it is amazingly comfortable. I got mine very cheap when they brought out the 2018 models & had the previous model on clearance. First use was on Hinchinbrook Island multiday hike and it stormed and got soaking wet over a couple of days and I didn’t purchase a cover as we weren’t forecast rain however before we left I did line my pack with a heavy duty plastic bag (it’s actually a garden bag comes in a 3 pack for about $3 from Coles or Woolworths) and it kept everything dry that needed to stay dry.

Hike Oregon 4 months ago I bought Atmos 50L with S size but then I returned it because the hip part of the AG is too tight for me, I then replaced with Atmos 65L M size (50L version wasn't available at the time). This 65L might be too big for me as I'm 5.4 feet and 128.7 pounds, but this backpack is really tough with plenty of rooms. I'm still trying to get used to. How much weight do you feel still comfort enough with your Aura 65?
