Amber, I am coming up on 60 years with an Ostomy! Also am watching your travel post and wanted to share that I started traveling overseas after turning 60. My friend and I made 8-9 trips mostly to Europe with no problems. Am enjoying your videos. Will text more as I follow your videos. Thanks for your upbeat attitude. I agree with you. Pat

I fly about twice a week and I have just started lifting my shirt to my ribs when I walk into the scanner. It seems, to me, to feel more empowering and frankly it seems to catch them off balance a little. The most important carry on for me is a large bag of patience with a pocket of humor. Cheers! Love ur videos! Real life stuff.

After my surgery, I had to fly with an ostomy and catheter. Talk about TRAUMATIZING! I was literally in tears when it was over. Between the attendant asking me if I wanted to be pat down in a separate area and my mom yelling at the attendant because she thought it was a "get out of jail free card," it was sheer chaos. I was not prepared!

It can definitely be overwhelming one time in Dallas I was exhausted and she did a pat down and the agent was new and almost jerked my bag off. She pulled it!! It was awful.

You have no idea how blessed you were during the tsa process all things considered. I have an ilieostomy and flew quite a bit while I was pregnant. Every time I flew (at least 3 trips), I got pat down because I was pregnant. It was absolute misery. I either got felt up by a tsa agent (like, she needed to buy me a drink afterwards kind of felt up, if you get my drift) or dealt with an agent that acted like I was such an inconvenience and would make me pull my bag out of my underwear so that they could see it. Mind you, this was all done in public because I didn’t have time to do a private pat down. It. Was. Lovely.

This is a positive outlook on flying and how to deal with staff. I've often wondered if security would stop me thinking I had a bag for smuggling and whether my bag would balloon instantly with the air pressure! I like your videos and have shared this on Stomanner - as part of community contribution to bring the best channels together. I've featured this video in Best 5 'Stoma' series - so I hope it increases your views and is a terrific way to continue your presence in search ranking.

I have a catheter and I was screend only once at Kansas City International. London and Chicago only had me go through a metal detector. I had a positive experience with TSA altogether.

Before leaving for the airport change your ostomy bag for a fresh one. It would be better to not eat anything the day before and even on the day of your flight. Just plain water should be enough. Having an accident leak on a plane would be my worse nightmare. Good tip about packing al your bags with ostomy kit.

I highly recommend getting global entry. It is $100 fir five years. You do not have to go to the same screening process and makes travelling by air so much easier!

I’d recommend getting TSA precheck for frequent travelers. metal detector only no pat downs unless metal flags, and bags plastic shouldn’t flag.

Thanks for the video - great tips! Any feedback on what your bag did while actually flying - did it balloon, or was it fine? Did you feel you had to empty it while on the plane? Some people have told me to empty right before you board and as soon as you have taken off - did you feel that?
@OstomyDiaries

It didn’t do much of anything. It seemed fine the entire flight! I emptied once on the plane, but I was drinking a LOT of coffee haha!

Just a heads up that there's no liquid size requirement if it's part of your medical supplies. You can also take an additional medical supply bag. I bought a red bag from target and added a medical patch to it so that there was no question about what I had inside. On the inside, I have a letter from my doctor and all of my supplies.

Dallas International Airport still checked my medical bag. They even tested all liquids (ostomy barrier spray) for hazardous material. It was intense. When I presented a medical card signed by my doctor the agent basically laughed at me. It’s different everywhere and with every agent!

They can not touch your bag. They can pat you around it and have you pat it, then swab your hand. If they try to touch your bag, ask for a supervisor. But let them know you have a bag.

This was awesome, thanks so much. I’ve only flown one time with my ostomy and I wish I had these tips then. My experience was smooth but I was a nervous wreck the whole time-even wondering if the air pressure would make my bag explode or do something strange. (It didn’t) next time I fly I will for sure get some travel containers to put my liquid supplies in...I was in a wheelchair last year so I’m really surprised they didn’t pat me down. But good to know for next time. Thanks Amber 💓
