charles complaining about slider acc is a reoccurring joke that will never get old

I imagine the OD change isn't to meant to be a new mechanism of expression in mapping but a way to enable new mechanisms of expression such as 1/4 jumps (I used these a lot if called for when I used to map). There's 2 ways you can use this. You can create positive spikes in OD where an objects OD will be higher than the consistent base line OD of the map or you can have negative spikes where an objects OD will be lower than the consistent base line of the map. The latter helps make patterns like cross screen 1/4 jumps or spaced streams a less punishing patterns (these patterns are far more punishing than they should be) and enable more expressive mapping. If you take a step back for a second this new invisible variable isn't that new at all since it's actually not the first invisible variable... That would probably be Slider Velocity.

I imagine variable OD wouldn't be very damaging if the mapper were to clearly show where OD changes are, or have a consistent pattern with their OD changes.

An indicator would help, no idea how that would work though... Even without an indicator, OD design could be done well if handled consistently and carefully. I worry that it'd only take a few poorly made maps to condition people to expect the worst, though.

@@lCharles445l that's true. i think if it were to be implemented there would need to be strict rules in the ranking criteria about how you could use it, not just suggestions.

it'll be just like Charles said with the patterns changing from 1/4th to 1/6th being shown as the distance between each note and being hinted at with a slider before the actual stream. except it's for cs, and not polyrhythms. Extending a mapper's mapping arsenal is a good idea only if it's regulated the same in the ranking criteria

This was a really good video! Progressively establishing map identity has become a rare art nowadays in my opinion, I think too many modern maps try to set their rules for player conditioning instantly / too early / without warning, which makes things unnecessarily harder for the player. The thing with the variable OD is that it could nerf things like slider-acc or people that start a map with a circle instead of a slider by having the object that is supposed to be lenient to hit ( by the classical use of a slider ) set to a lower OD, however I am sure that it could also be (mis)used like in your example, in which case mapping standards that introduces guidelines regarding leniency could ( should? ) be in need.

Some maps set the rules instantly and without warning, yes, and there's been arguments on whether that's an acceptable way to do it or not. An early retry doesn't waste much time, but having to retry at all might feel unfair... v2b's Byakuya Gentou is the poster child of this issue. Everything I ever did swing related was made in response to that diff.

Huhh, that variable OD thing is pretty interesting. Imagine if mappers use lower OD to do the same things as how they used slider leniency to make gameplay fair for players. I think that would be a pretty cool addition if we're going to implement Score v2. Although, OD by itself is confusing imo, It'd be so confusing how hitting earlier or late on some circles would score 300s while others dont.

I don't see an easy way to message you but I did opt out of the unlisted thing. That video among a few others of mine embarrass me but I don't like taking down any of my videos because there's always someone that likes even my least favorite videos and I am an advocate for media preservation. You commenting just proved that point that someone somewhere likes my videos I made 9 years ago even if I am embarrassed by them. I don't trust Google for shit so the moment this was announced I redownloaded my entire upload set cus many videos I don't have the raws for anymore, and after seeing your comment I changed all my unlisted to public cus who knows if there's another "privacy" update in the future when I am incapacitated or long gone and can't opt out. I also have a couple of videos people made using my 9 year old laughter as a source for some joke videos. One of which is unlisted and runs a chance of being privated by this change. I'll post a link to it when I get home. Thanks again.

Glad you got those notifications, yt's been quietly removing any comments of mine that aren't on my own videos. I've sent some stuff into yt support but I'm not holding my breath on that. Awesome to hear you're moving stuff to public, I still get a laugh out of them even today. Keep up the good work man.

@@lCharles445l Yeah I was confused why your comments only appeared in my feed and not on my videos. They aren't being withheld by my studio as suspicious until checked like I expected, and the video counts your posts in the comment number but they are literally not visible in any form other than the notifications section for me. If you didn't see I reposted that message on your discussion, but couldn't link the two videos as they got filtered out. I made a public playlist on my channel of the two videos people made sourcing my really old videos, one of which is unlisted and runs the risk of disappearing with the change. The playlist is called "Videos that use my laughter" I appreciate you reaching out to me for the unlisted thing, and I only wish I knew this was coming, cus I'm sure countless videos I love became unlisted over the years and will eventually disappear.
