Volkswagen Golf - Is it still the benchmark hatchback?

This much improved version of the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf might just be all the car you'll ever need.
Volkswagen's Golf is the family hatchback against which all others are judged - and in seventh generation form has proved to be the best selling version of this car ever made. Now it's got a smarter look, an all-new 1.5-litre TSI engine option, more sophisticated media connectivity and a range of important detail changes. If you're shopping in this segment, you might be asking yourself why you should buy a Golf. But perhaps the more pertinent question is whether there's now really any reason why you shouldn't.

SOLD! Yes I'm sold on the VW Golf, have owned 8 of them over the years. All fine cars and although I own an Audi A5 at the moment will be ordering a 2019 GTI. Don't listen to the people talk about reliability, treat the Golf well it will also treat you very well, just my thoughts.

Karl P Nothing to do with being smart or not if someone simply does not like the Golf, but of course the sheep will follow and think anyone who doesn't like VW is not normal. Your comment says so much about todays society. For the record ive had brand new Skoda, VW and Audi and ALL had major faults within a few days of leaving the showroom. Never again, what a waste of money. Subaru for me next. A brand that knows how to make tough reliable cars.

I bought my VW Golf S with the 1.8T gasoline engine in Feb. 2017 and paid $17,500. I compared it with the VW GTI and actually felt the basic Golf didn't give away that much in acceleration to the GTI, and as for road manners, was a more comfortable ride. Today, I have over 16,000 trouble-free miles, have achieved 49 mpg on the highway with it, and around town driving I average about 31 mpg. In my view, it is an outstanding automobile, a handsome, timeless design, and thank God, does NOT look like the garish sheet metal originating in Asia. I plan on keeping this car for many, many years and couldn't be happier with my purchase.

I am driving my moms golf mk7 2016 for 3 years now because she doesnt drive much and all in all it is a very reliable, comfortable car. I did my driving test on a mk7 gtd and drove my moms golf with 110 ps. Because i love the mk7 so much i bought myself a mk7 but this time the 1,5 tsi with 150 ps. The mk7 just looks so good in my eyey especially with r line. Even though i know that the mk8 wass 1 month away i still decide to buy the mk7 facelift. I didnt like the interior and exterior of the mk8 . The Golf 7 facelift is definitely the best golf for me.

Excellent Review. After owning mini vans for several years, it was time to buy a small affordable car. I bought an Elantra about 5 years ago, brand new. I was quite happy with it. Then in 2017, it was time to renew my car and instead of another Elantra, after reading several reviews, and for a bit of more money, I bought a new Golf TSI 1.8.. If I were to rate the Elantra, it would be a 6, and the Golf a 9. I think the GTI would get my 10, based on a couple of test drives I did. There is no comparison: the suspension is way better; the turns are super nice, the power is amazing, you just feel the kick; the interior is super much better, the visibility and maneuverability are just superb compared to the Elantra, the practicality, of just bringing boxes from Home Depot or Costco, much more convenient. The Sound System, much much better; the cabin noise, it has much less noise than the Elantra. Driving in the snow is not a problem with the Golf, the Elantra does not feel that secure. Anyway, there is no way I can complain about my Golf TSI. I now want to get a GTI, but it's a bit more, but I'll get it. Cheers.

I've owned one of these for about 18 months now - it's very good overall, despite all the haters on here (who probably can't afford one!). A well made car which is very good to drive - my only slight reservations are that the 7 speed DSG can be a bit hesitant sometimes and road noise is higher than in my previous mk6 Golf - possibly because this one has Kuhmo tyres? The Carnet applications are a bit clunky and not really of much use. I love the adaptive cruise control, which works superbly. Overall, the Golf is still the definitive small family hatch - but dare I say I do find it a touch boring!

This is a very good car, a superb all rounder if you're in the market for a front wheel drive, comfortable and roomy hatchback. My only problem with cars these days is the fact that everyone is obsessed with soft touch materials and cars filled with technology instead of just enjoying the way a car drives and handles. Most problems these days on modern cars are now related to tech issues. They are too complex, and the blame should lay firmly at the door of the manufacturers for not assembling or testing the vehicles properly before putting them on the market. Its an absolute disgrace that we still get so many reliability issues in 2020, yet cars are constantly increasing in price ! The public are being made mugs of.
@loukili63

Can't confirm this. My MK7 TGI facelift has the full technology pack an it makes the difference compared to my former MK6. DSG, auto distance control with stop and go support, active lane assist, trafix sign recognition, automatic heating control, adaptive light, cornering light, heated windshield, parking heater, rear camera, parking assistent, emergency brakes, navigation system with voice control, comfort steering wheel, dynaudio sound, automatic dimming mirror and much more. All is working pefect and makes this care so nice, safe and comfortable to use. Before I bought it I looked in detail to other care maker offers but even the premium care makers couldn't beet for me the MK7. In the some of it's properties, it is not beatable. For it's price you get a lot of value.

The Golf has a 2017 plate...! Guess this video was made some time around then? There's a new mark 8 Golf coming soon. Hopefully VW will improve on the IMO cardboard box styling. [edit] PS if you are not UK-based the car's registration plate "KX17 PDY" (1:47) shows the year of registration. The "17" in "KX17 PDY" refers to a March 2017 and if it was a "67" (17+50) refers to a September 2017 registration. Then again the title of this review is "Volswagen Golf 2019..." Yeah but you have to spend serious money on an A Class because the standard engine and standard trim cars are all built with Renault engines the exact ones that went into Renault Meganes and when you are spending over 20k on a hatchback you really don't want a rebadged Renault.

What reviewers don't tell you: the TSi engines are hesitant at low revs and progress can be jerky in heavy traffic, the steering is incredibly numb; it literally has no feel. The dreary, unimaginative interior has the occasional trim rattle, the cruise control is fiddly and unergonomic, the dashboard reflects badly in the windscreen, the shiny trim on steering column reflects badly and the front seats lack thigh support if you are slightly taller than average. Another problem is wind noise from the door mirrors.

@netiturtle
@netiturtle 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I don't agree with any of the points you made Engine, we might have experience with different engine or gearbox, DSG does have issues at low speeds, across all manufacturers, but the new 7 speed DSG should be much better. Manual with 110kW engine is excellent, despite utilizing a small turbo, I can't complain about lack of power when needed even at low revs. Manual gearbox does give more control over engine stalling than current DSG gearboxes do, reason for some premium carmakers to revert to traditional gearbox. Steering doesn't have the best feedback but, in my opinion, is better than average and very precise. Interior is better than competition, hands down. It looks and feels good, controls are well positioned and logical. I've yet to hear any trim rattle or see a reviewer mention it, I took a long time to watch reviews of potential cars before buying one. The mk7 and 7.5 have been out for so long it should have surfaced it was a real issue. Cruise control literally takes one click with your thumb. Speed adjust, disengage, with further single clicks. There's grooves for your thumb to help locate the buttons without help of visual confirmation. Dashboard reflection is what it is on every other car, black matte plastic reflects minimal light. I have yet to see a steering column reflection. What I do sometimes see, is side-vent silver decoration trim reflection on side-windows. I'm 187cm and I can't complain about lacking thigh support. There is some noise from mirrors but overall, this car is quieter than competition. It's unexpectedly noisy with studded winter tires though, maybe VW focused insulation on frequencies generated by summer tires and not winter tires. I have no experience with stud-less winter-tires.

Crash test ratings. Acceleration(torque) in high speeds for overtaking safely (80-140km/h) 0 to 100km/h is pointless to me. Regards!

I cant afford one. But wouldn't buy it anyway or a focus. Why? I really hate electric brakes. Unfortunately for them, so does a friend of mine who bought a Qashqai, and another who has a Golf. Experience of an Insignia hire car with one of these horrible things put me off for life! i30 handbook: 2 sides for manual handbrake, 10 sides for electric brake+hill assist. Read it twice, still don't understand it. Why replace simple perfection? Why remove a major control and replace it with something with so many non-instinctive operational variables. Note that the control algorithms vary between manufacturers as well, and some even have 2 buttons! If you've been driving a while you have to re-train your muscle memory. Sure you can learn, but what about the hire car scenario or a company pool car? You get in and drive a car you can't fully control straight away. All for somewhere to put your coffee? DOH! More complexity = worse reliability, it's a well known engineering rule. If it goes wrong, you can't fix it, neither can your average garage..main dealer only. With a handbrake, it's simple, it's easy and you can feel what's happening. With a switch you rely on hope. For me, a deal breaker. Lovely car otherwise!

The sophisticated suspension is not enough to overcome a poor reliability history - the dealer network will fight tooth and nail to deny any chronic problems that occur - they are abnormally expensive to maintain - after 3 - 4 years they become a "money pit" of repairs.
