As a European, this car is by far and away the best car in the world. Good brand, luxurious inside, very rafined, reliable enough (and parts are cheap and easy to find), perfect dimensions for Europe, sporty in the correct trim, cheap to run and just great feeling in general and you look good in it everywhere you go. Golf 7.5 is the best car in the world in my opinion. Nothing beats it.

One of the best things about VW cars is their overall longevity. Unlike other brands, VWs don't go thru radical changes between generations. Koreans, for starters, even reach extremes sometimes, and even facelifts can bring mayor changes design-wise. The result? Your ride ends up feeling and looking older than it actually is. I'm a few months from getting my brand new Polo, and I couldn't be more excited.

Too bad we can't get the Polo in North America. I see from reviews and customers that it is a popular commuter car. A Polo would sure be better than some of the small cars we get here from Fiat, Nissan, or Mitsubishi. Fortunately we do get some good small cars from Toyota, Kia and Hyundai. I took out a Golf with the 1.4 TSI recently and was really surprised by how little difference there is compared with the 1.8 TSI. Yes, you have to put your foot into the accelerator more on highway on-ramps, but the 1.4 TSI has more than enough power for day-to-day use. Also, the front end seems a heck of a lot lighter now - maybe it was subjective, but the aluminum block of the 1.4 TSI likely weights less than the iron-block 1.8 TSI. The reviews are right - it has a dead spot below 2000 rpm, and then the engine seems to wake up. Likely it's the eight-speed automatic trying to put itself into the highest gear possible for fuel economy purposes.

Update: I just checked (June 16, 2019) AutoTrader and nation wide found 88 2019 Golf 1.4 turbo S or SE with manual transmission. Lots more with the automatic. They are out there, either your local dealer might trade for one or you may have to drive or fly to go get one you want. Most dealers have discounts on the Golf.

The base Golf seems to sell to a niche of buyer who appreciates restrained styling, a higher quality chassis, and a slightly more premium interior feel in a smaller package (but doesn't want the power and performance of a GTI.) It's not a huge niche in the United States, where getting a bulk of features on the cheap with more space seems to be how cars get sold, and saucy styling seems to help. But if you would rather have "a little less car", done well, it's hard to beat a Golf. I've always gravitated toward Golfs and have loved living with them in the long term...two MkIV GTIs and now a 2017 Golf Alltrack, they've all been great cars!

As a GTI owner I could (and have) go on and on about the virtues of the various Golf models. But sticking to the basic Golf, I'll just add a comment that applies to all three models (currently) sold in the US; the overall size and shape of the vehicle. Some find the Golf styling dated. I find it classic and remarkably versatile. As Alex notes, it's nearly a foot shorter than the Civic hatchback. Other rivals are closer to the Golf in size but only the Veloster at 166.9" in length and the KIA Soul (163") are shorter than the Golf (167.6"). That length is combined with an awesome amount of overall cargo space (53.7 cubic feet) that's over twice that offered by some rivals and rear seat headroom near the top of the category. And while it's definitely a personal and parochial advantage the Golf is one of the few vehicles that qualify for a significant discount on Washington State ferries with its sub-fourteen feet length. ;) The basic Golf is no longer the unique, standout vehicle in its class it once was. VW has found repeatedly that Americans prefer larger, cheaper vehicles and don't value the driving dynamics provided by a European sedan, particularly if it's not combined with straight line performance. With the introduction of the new generation Jetta and the GLI VW is even considering discontinuing the sale of the basic Golf in the US. (The GTI outsells the Golf two to one.) Were it not for the Golf's overall balance of driving dynamics and versatility I might look elsewhere in the category. But for a satisfying daily driver with the best bumper-to-bumper warranty in the industry, room for at least three adults and a big dog or a couple who doesn't want a crossover and still wants the versatility of one, and over 30 mpg's, it's an appealing choice.

We're not talking women's fashions here where designs much change annually to be desirable. Arguably the most beautiful automobile ever produced was the E type Jaguar nearly 60 years ago. It's is one of very few automobiles (Nine as I recall) included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.

Mike Morales The Mk VII Golfs are built in Puebla, but before that, they were all built in Germany. VW is moving it back to Germany starting with the Mk VIII. The current 1.8 TSI and 1.4 TSI are both built in Mexico as well. Furthermore, ALL Golfs are built at just one factory, so the entire world’s Mk VIIs came from Mexico.

I truly like the restrained designs implemented in the Golf. Smooth lines inside and out never go out of style. As well, I'm glad to see that VW hasn't jumped onto the band wagon of having a screen standing up at the top of the dashboard. Having the screen embedded into the dashboard as with the Golf here ultimately offers a more fun driving experience by eliminating the distraction of a screen being in your face.

What I've found with cars built in the past ten years or so has been that the many electronic functions such as steering wheel mounted and screen controls offer so much in the way of convenience and customization that a focus becomes placed on making adjustments and playing with screens because they have a way of calling out to us. For myself the result can be all but eliminating the simple pleasure of just driving. To me a top mounted screen completely demands being paid attention to, when I'd rather just enjoy driving. I was making a statement about myself and what I prefer. I probably should have altered my dialog, as I didn't want to offend anyone. I do understand what I think your response meant and if top mounted screens bring enjoyment to you that's good if it's what you want your driving experience to be.

The data shows these screens, in reality, allow drivers to focus on the road MORE than the ones away from the top of the dash, and for those who find the screens to be distracting during long drives at night... there are “off” buttons for them that turn them dark. Again, you show bias, though also a lack of actual experience with this technology. You’re showing fear instead of wisdom; ignorance, instead of insight.

I love the little turbo on the Civic. The engine loves to rev and pulls light a freight train. It has slightly more HP than torque unlike most other little turbos. That gives the engine more urgency when revving.

For what it’s worth, Consumer Reports still gushes over the now 2021 Golf TSI. Top score in the small car category (86) and nothing in the “low points “ section. Reliability is now considered quite good.

There are some differences to the european Golf. First be glad that you only got the 1.4 TSI with toothed beld and not with a chain. Because they made a lot of problems. 1.4 and 1.8 are gone in the european programm. The Radio/Nav is different. The hand brake is electronic and the filler flap at the passenger side. So that's about it on the first impressum.

This is probably a tough question to have answered in these very well done videos but it might be good to compare company track records of reliability in these models. Honda and Toyota in Canada for example always did very well in reliability rankings in the Lemon-Aid guide to Cars and Trucks while the German and American brands usually had pitiful results. Another thing to note is when the car does need a part -- the Euro cars were crazy often 10-30 times more expensive. So when discussions of cost to buy come up - sometimes I think it is important more to talk about cost of ownership. If you buy a $25,000 Honda and you buy a $24,000 Hyundai - that's fine but if in 5 years you can sell the Honda for $3,000 more than the Hyundai - the Honda is the car that costs less.

I own a 2016 Golf 1.8t with the 5 speed manual. A stage 1 tune with the 5 speed works very well and I prefer it over the 6 speed. It's one less gear, but 6 is not needed when tuned. Red line in 5th is a 174 mph and with the tune top speed is a solid 150 mph. I am glad I went with the Golf S with the tune over the GTI for cost savings from the purchase price to insurance cost. Almost four years and zero issues so far.

@@evang3943 I live in Idaho and lowering the vehicle does not seem to be a good Idea with some of the back roads around here. What I have done is stiffen my springs and keep the stock height for the most part by installing Sumo Coils that are maintenance free between the coils. Helps with handling and should prevent under carriage damage which it has so far by remaining at stock height.

I have a 2019 Golf se and my only gripe is getting the manual transmission out of reverse. It wants to go into third instead of first. I might just need more time with the car. Other than that I love everything about the car. The biggest plus is the leg room. I’m a six footer and I have more than enough leg room.

Evan G I have driven numerous cars in my lifetime but none of them had the legroom I wanted. Then someone pointed me in the direction of the Jetta. I drove it and found it to be very comfortable. Then I drove the Golf and fell in love. That was the car for me. Very roomy and fast enough for me. The 1.4t is all I need I do very little highway driving so adaptive cruise is not on my list but I can understand why people would want it.

Sorry, I just couldn't pick the VW with this new base engine with a turbo for long term ownership. For a hatch, it would be a tough choice between the Toyota Corolla in XSE trim and the Mazda3 hatch - The C pillar on the 3 hatch has grown on me and both should be a reliable and fun choice (with the manual at least). I would test them both on the same day and take the one that spoke to me the most with the best deal.

Same here the 3 and the Corolla seems to attract me the most in this segment. The Mazda styling wise seems to be a mini Alpha Romeo but with some reliability under the hood. The Corolla seems popular where I live, I'm sure parts will be cheap and you won't need to fix it very often. But what I like the most about those is.. the lack of turbo.

@@flakeu Exactly! For ownership (not lease) and best long-term reliability, non-aspirated (IMO), is the way to go and the Mazda3 and Corolla Hatch have good ones with right hp/tq to get the job done. VW had a good, reliable 5cyl. N/A motor fairly recently, but from what I remember, didn't make the mpg rating cut.

Great utility, design ages very well and park it anywhere. The 2019 is the most reliable being the final model year. The 1.4 steps up its mpg game. Same interior (not fully loaded obviously) and platform that underpin the GTI and Golf R. That warranty is icing on the cake.

Good review, Alex. Unfortunately, Volkswagen has stated it will no longer import the Golf into the US for 2020 due to sales, and federal certification for the new Mark VIII Golf that's just being introduced in Europe. The GTI and Golf R will apparently still be available in 2020. I'm not a fan of the big butt on the Mazda 3 hatchback, it looks VERY Alfa-Romeo-ish. I'm definitely a fan of the Soul GT Turbo.

Actually owned a ‘15 GTI. Traded it in for a premium Mazda 3 hatch with AWD. Obviously less power from the naturally aspirated 2.5. But other then that, in my opinion, the new 3 is much better then the older GTI.

Two month ago, I was on a market for a new compact hatch with MT. I was looking for a fun to drive car with blind sport monitor and Apple car lay. I tested Corolla , civic hatchback , golf , Subaru cross track ended up leasing 2019 Vw sportwagen S . ( 6MT, 1.4L FWD). I ended up with wagon for two reason - I couldn’t find regular golf s with 6MT within 50 miles from my home,. My second reason - wagon probably can better accommodate skis, fishing poles, bike rack,... Corolla hatchback was a big disappointment for me. Blind spot monitor and moon roof not available with MT in any trim level. The car lfeels smaller inside then outside due to a dark colored ceiling and a slopped hatch definitely make it less cargo friendly. Golf interior stile is 3 levels up compare to Corolla or civic. I am also averaging 38.8 mpg within first 2.5K miles. Just to build some credibility - I used to own golf mk2 and mk4, as well as 6 Toyota and Lexus cars within last 15 years. I also was in a go kart sport years back. In a golf I feel more connected to a car in civic. Also civic hatchback is more like a lift back. Maybe it should be directly compared with golf sportwagen.

Kia Soul is CHEAP! I have owned two VWs (Golf & Rabbit). The fit and finish was worlds above the fit and finish of a Kia Soul. I now own the Kia Soul GT Turbo and I'm amazed on a daily basis at how cheaply made it is as compared to the solidly built Golf/Rabbit. From it's tinny sound when you close the doors to it's cheap interior materials. I would remove Kia from that statement.

I' surprised you didn't include the Elantra GT. I own a Elantra GT Sport, and when I bought it I did look at the Mazda and the Golf. I like all 3, but the Elantra won for price, equipment and fun to drive. Would definitely recommend a trip to a Hyundai dealer if you're looking at a Golf.

Great review. In many ways the Golf is following the Beetle philosophy.......why change it for the sake of change. The photos of the generation 8 Golf show it is the same basic shape and proportions, but looks like the designers have been using a wind tunnel more....cheating the wind is a smart way to improve fuel economy and reduce noise. And the new digital instruments and dash appear pretty nifty. No matter which hatchback (or liftback in the case of the models that have more extreme slope to the rear opening) you compare the Golf to, for many buyers the styling may be the biggest factor. The Japanese and Korean models keep changing their designs every few years, but the Golf has stayed with what is practical. Wonder what the next generation of Civic and Corolla hatchbacks will look like?

@@BossBoos697 Hi, I would not go quite as far as hideous, but ever since the fad of huge black plastic grills (mouths) and non-aerodynamic angles, fins, fake vents, fake scoops, and whatever other silly sculpture has been added, I agree that many front and rear of vehicles has gone too far beyond Buck Rogers styling excess. US car styling got over chromed and over finned from 1957 to 1962 and it looks like we are enduring another wave of design madness that will eventually return to normal. I appreciate that VW has so far mostly avoided this copy-cat design trend, but the fake exhaust ports are dumb.

Very thorough, as always, and awesome review, as expected. Mazda 3 Hatchback: initially I had reservations about the design, now I appreciate the effort Mazda did for this car. I really like it, better than some premium brands. I know the Civic HB is closely matched to the Golf, I believe that the almost polar opposite styling cancels any cross shopping for these two cars. Restrained German tailored lines, to the forward edgier Japanese design, there is too much distance style wise to think one would debate one or the other.

Now have 55,000 miles on my 2019 Golf Sportwagen S with manual transmission. I've owned a lot of station wagons and this has been the best. Always 40 mpg on long drives and it carries an EM pinball game (250 pounds) and still gets over 40 mpg. The original eco tires were not great, but now with a set of Michelins it is better than ever. Uses no oil between 6000 mile changes. Only issues was faulty wiring in both front doors, but repaired under warranty. I cannot believe the automatic gets better mpg on the highway. My Golf was one of the last ones built in Mexico and the build quality is excellent. Too bad VW does not sell the PHEV Passat wagon in NA, but they want you to buy one of their SUVs. Oh well, I'm looking forward to going 100K miles in this lil wagon.

The Golf is the most sold car of all time, worldwide. I believe it just surpassed 35 million units sold, since its introduction in the 1970's. This 2019 model maybe the last of the base versions sold in the USA. It looks like only the GTI and R will continue to be sold. VW has not made a final decision if the new 2020 base S and SE model will be sold here.

Yep, it appears if there is a 1.4 turbo 2020 Golf (made in Mexico), it may just be the 2019 will be labeled as 2020. According to news reports the 2020 generation 8 Golfs will be available in Europe in Fall of 2019, but North America not see any of those until late 2020. Because the S and SE Golfs have seriously declining sales we may only get the GTI and R from Germany. The SUV and CUV market is where it's at. At least VW is still making sedans.

That would be the Crosstrek in the US. And you're correct, it is a competitor in terms of specs. Its advantage is Subaru's full time all wheel drive but that means it weighs more than 200 lbs more than the Golf and is significantly slower with much lower fuel economy.

Honda's adaptive cruise with manual transmission doesn't disengage if you change gears, either, as long as you don't take too long to do it. I know. I have one. I just searched online about VW's behavior, and from what I'm reading, it doesn't disengage, either, as long as you do it within 30 seconds. I hate "leatherette" upholstery. A vinyl seat by any other name is just as sticky in the summer. I wish they'd offer a cloth option on the higher level trims instead of that plastic.

A simple solution I have used for years in cars with vinyl upholstery: fabric seat covers. Protects the original vinyl and is much cooler in summer and not so cold in the winter. The are many good seat cover brands. I dislike black vinyl, and in so many cars that is the only option. Ugh! I miss the days of the fifties thru the eighties when you could get lots of colors in the interior, either vinyl or fabric.

They are driven hard and they are operating 24 hours a day. Lots of idling too. They are rare now because they stopped producing Civilian CV back in 2009. I think it was sold as police car for a few years later than that. I'm pretty happy with mine.

For about the 10th time, I will ask that you put the seats down in hatchbacks. Do the seats fold flat? How is the lift over height. Backs don't like having to lower something into a poorly designed hatch opening. I suspect seats down, the hatch space would be very competitive to other small hatches (except Honda). The conservative, high end styling appeals. A lot. Thank you VW, for not using the awful fake black mesh that we see all over most Japanese cars (Honda Civic hatch rear end, for example). The fake exhaust outlets, IMO, are fine. VW has so many nice little touches. For example, the strut instead of a prop rod to hold up the hood. Yes, it's not the reliability champ that the Toyota is and doesn't perform like the Civic, but were it my money, it would definitely be on the list.

I honestly think the new Corolla Hatchback looks better. It has a more unique and modern styling while this Volkswagen looks bland and boring. This is EXACTLY the car/engine type that would benefit from a CVT. That transmission could keep the revs in the boosted sweet spot during acceleration and quickly drop the RPMs once at speed, saving fuel. Small hatchbacks with tiny engines are the CVT sweet spot, not SUVs, off-roaders or high performance sedans.

Cyril Matthew When it comes to cars, yes. The regular Golf comes with only a single engine, and has, since the Diesel was banned. It was a 1.8T and is now the 1.4T. Our cities have much wider streets and much more parking than in Europe or Asia. The suburbs are much less populated and most roads will go a km or more between intersections. We drive MUCh more on motorways as well. Together with our fuel prices being about 4-6 times less means we drive larger, mpre comfortable cars that are faster on the straight. That means the Golf is not a popular car class. In fact, they sell twice as many GTIs as they sell Golf hatchbacks.
