Otacon is Huey's son (You'll see Huey in TPP) Solid Snake (Big bosses' clone) killed Big Boss before MGS1 took place. Thats basically all you need to know to get into the console series.

While he may physically resemble his father, I love how Hal couldn't be any more different from that selfish old monster, and ultimately succeeds in his aspirations where Huey failed and earns his own happy ending just by dint of being himself.

How the fuck Hal didn't grow up to be a psycho is a damn miracle. His dad was an utter piece of shit while his mom had an unhealthy obsession with a dead woman and only gave birth to him so she could play her imaginative lesbian fantasy with said dead woman (who was likely to be straight, mind you). His step mom groomed him, and caused his dad to off himself. No one gives a shit about Huey, of course, but the bastard HAD to try to kill Emma as well out of spite. She didn't die, but she ended up hating Hal and traumatized for life. In a story with badass soldiers and cyborgs, and most strongest man is a geeky scientist who never gives up despite all those bullshits thrown at him.

Well Hal had people like Snake and the others to help him from falling too deep into his work and not lose his moralities. Huey became so obsessed with his strive for success that he was willing to sacrifice him and his wife just for that. If you played Phantom Pain, you know what I mean.

We get to see from the very start that Huey blames every single problem he has and every single fuck up he makes on everyone but himself. He abdicates blame all the way to the very end of Phantom Pain, calling Snake and the others monsters after he basically handed Sahelanthropus to a child and nearly caused a world-ending zombie virus. Meanwhile, when Hal finds out that Metal Gear is going nuclear, he doesn't pass on excuses, he just works to fix it. It's not Snake that made him better. In fact, it's probably Otacon that helped Snake not become as jaded and destructive as Big Boss.

4:09 one of my favorite shots in any game ever. It's just so genuinely cinematic, and yet so simple. No one else could have pulled off using a purely black background in a game like this and made it feel so purposeful. And thematically it totally works. You are at the climax of Disk 1, wandering into the literal darkness from this point on. Especially the shot of Snake just standing in the dark, looking over his shoulder back at Otacon, it feels like a frame from a manga like Berserk or something, it's just so memorable and iconic.
