I knew that you would either love or hate the album. Honestly, this watching was kind of painful, because I am a longtime Madonna fan but this album is my favorite, it completely moved the floor under my feet when it came out. There have been some hugely controversial Madonna albums like Erotica, American Life and MDNA, but in my point of view none of them have been so panned, controversial, misunderstood and talked about as Madame X. The artistic and structural approach is more akin to progressive rock and art pop. The use of vocal distortion has a different meaning on each song that has it. In general, the album is Madonna's most experimental and adventurous, and that is too much to say. It's world music, it's art pop, it's avant-pop, it's latin. It is crazy, not even mentioning the political weight that it has. All the things that surround this era were polemical among fans and critics, and that's why this album is a masterpiece. It mixes beauty and uglyness to convey a message, and each time you listen to a sound or effect, it will have a meaning. That is art pop. It is PROVOCATIVE and that is Madonna's essence.

I agree with you on many points of your observation. This album is incredibly smart/genius and most can’t get it. I’m rather ignorant when it comes to genre but, I’m almost positive she took it and exemplified it with respect and her special touch. I also believe that the album was made more than ever as a soundtrack while writing her theater show. Probably written at the same time.

Madonna moved to Portugal with her family, and when she get there something about the history of the place and the language and the arts and other things moved her, she said that she wasn’t even thinking about make a new album, something in that place touched her, as a brazilian, this album says a lot about us too, beautifully done Madonna!

This is the most multicultural and experimental album from Madonna yet, different from albums like Hardy Candy I think this one is the kind that will age best, but if you are looking for your regular pop diva lollipop album you will get disappointed, if you watch the video clips of some of those songs you can tell that Madonna was almost imagining a musical with this album, i Ithink she was aware that was not going to be a big commercial hit but that she wanted to do this album regardless so she could completly explore this path before going back to her regular stuff, just like she did with Erotica, that she knew was not going to be a super hit, but she needed to do it

I was at the Madame X theatre tour (twice) in London and whilst I love the album, it took on another life performed live and intimate. I was there too when she overran by 5 mins and the theatre put the curtain down and shut the sound off. So she closed with I Rise effectively a cappella and defiant which was amazing
@charlesvillacis

FYI, "I Rise" WAS the closing song for the standard album. Two more songs were added to the Deluxe Version, but I Rise was moved to the end to remain being the closing song. It's definitely one of the best songs on Madame X. This Album was created to accompany Madonna's Theatrical Tour which was the first time she played in smaller theater venues and not big concert halls and stadiums. That's why it has such a theatrical sound and such a different vibe to it than her other albums. She is always experimenting with her music, and her albums' sound and themes come alive in her concerts. You gotta watch the Madame X concert video to truly appreciate this album. Yes, It's very artistically experimental and very political. Works perfectly for good theater! She also made music videos for each of the songs and they were amazing story tellers!

I love Madame X, and think it's one of her best. The fact that it's so adventurous and different, and that she did things here that she's never done before, it brings us back to the Madonna of the 90s and early 2000s. That was the era where she experimented and didn't just make popular trendy music like on Hard Candy through Rebel Heart. Madame X also came with a complete concept for her petsona, several high production music videos for many songs (even if they weren't singles), and one of the most intimate and theatrical tours of her career. She was fully inspired and engaged here.

Finally enough Love! You made it to Madame X. I was afraid you were gonna have a lukewarm reaction to it specially after your take on Music and American life. Now Madame X finally becomes part of that holy trinity to those Mirwais produced albums. So contrary to what you said, I think most of us avid madonna fans felt this was a return to form for madonna compared to her previous few albums. And to me personally this stands as one of her finest albums. For some context on the album’s sound, it was inspired by all the music she was exposed to after moving to Lisbon during the aftermath of 2017 presidential election. So It’s a global album that incorporates so many different styles of music. I love how the album starts off with Medellin, with madonna singing “Ven conmigo, let's take a trip” preluding the musical and cultural journey she is about to take us on. From disco, fado, art pop, arabic ginwa music, house, trip hop, reggae, batuque, a quirky take on classical music, reggaeton and more. They all mix so seamlessly and sound like they belong in the same album. I wish I could go into each song because they are all so intelligently crafted. An amazing example of one you liked is God control. Even tho the message is clear, there are a lot of layers in how she conveys it. The way she delivers the song’s opening lines feels like her mouth is forced shut, while in the end she whispers the same verse, all eluding that sometimes it feels like you can’t speak this obvious truth. Ironically lyrically she is saying “everybody knows the damn truth”. Also sonically it’s so layered! The strings swirling so frantically giving it a sense of urgency, the choir lamenting the loss of gun control. All being incorporated into a disco track, now that’s genius! Dark ballet is another amazing track. The song is a literal re telling of Joan of ark’s story. But I think what Madonna is saying here is that her story is still relevant today because of the dance or “game” so many minorities specially in the LGBTQ+ have to play to survive in this world. How people outside societal norms are vilified for standing their ground. It’s quirky, dark yet comical and bizarre in the best way possible. And a song I know many of us can relate to. Another incredible track is Batuka, which is inspired by batuque music which originated in Cape Verde. The slave trade has strong roots there and the drums would actually be taken away by the church from these women because it was viewed as an act of rebellion. In the song madonna is singing with the actual batukadeiras orchestra. And it feels like a powerful rebellion in response to todays issues. It was incredible seeing it live with all the batukaderias on stage, such an female empowerment moment. I could go into so much more detail and talk for hours about all the music, lyrics and layers to this record, but I cant fit that all in here haha. It’s madonna being as bold and experimental as ever and I love it. Hope you revisit it sometime, give it another shot and go deeper.

Dark Ballet and God Control are, imv, rhapsodic in nature (especial the latter), and such rhapsodic compositions always sound a bit wild. Yet, these two songs work for me. In terms of Dark Ballet, if the main message of the song is to 'wake up' from the political nightmare we were living in after the 2016 election, then it makes creative sense to have that piano 'Nutcracker Ballet" (NB) as the center piece because we too (just like the child protagonist in the NB) have the power to make change and fulfill our own dreams.

This album is not made to listen doing tasks or just to have fun, with the exception of a few silly and lighter tracks like “Crazy” and the feats with Maluma, Swae and Anitta, it’s an extremely conceptual, political and poetic album, influenced by Portugal and Brazil cultures and their origins and variety. It speaks of so many important subjects that you just can’t sit down and listen to it as if it’s a mainstream album like Confessions or Hard Candy, you have to check for meanings of each song, its influences and the artists behind it. Basically Madame X requires THINKING and mostly THINKING OUTSIDE YOUR OWN BOX - which isn’t the tea for everyone, specially in North America, and she knew that while recording it, pretty much like American Life (no wonder this project made her get in touch with American Life again during the whole Madame X era), so yeah, not surprised with the reaction at all lol.

Exactly, it's honestly crazy to me that people have reduced Madonna to just a Disco Dollie ala Kylie Minogue. I mean no shade to Kyles but like, I mean, it's what's expected from her whereas Madonna has been known to shift and evolve musically. Madonna is an artist. Madame X is not only an experimental, and by experimental world music, but also a very political album. That right there tells you everything, definitely not a mainstream album at all. Always expect the unexpected from Madonna. I would think people would know better by now or at least her "fans" but you know...

I think time will prove how special and absolutely unique and bravely experimental and out of left field and honestly weird and strange this album is for the time it was released in. No one and nothing sounded like this before or since. Some of the songs on this album are stunning and timeless. Which artist after 40 years in this business will come out with an album this adventurous and unclassifiable and unexpected? The goddamn videos for this album was on a different plain and masterpieces all of them. They brilliantly bring out the songs they were made for and makes their scope and vision perfectly clear and inspired. Can't wait for you to watch them. This is an era, not an album. It needs to be heard in conjunction with the music videos, the documentary, "World of Madame X" and the Madame X concert video. You are correct that it encapsulates all her signature artistry, but I disagree with you when you say it doesn't work, or feel like a Madonna album. To me, this her Magnum Opus and Political Manifesto. Everything in her career led her to this album. This is not an American Madonna album, it's a World Madonna album. She chooses vocoder effects on her voice because these are not her stories to tell. She is highlighting global social issues, and puts herself vocally in the background in order to give space to the musicians and singers who's stories are being shared; or in the case of God Control, her voice being silenced; or Killers where she is an ally for all marginalised groups. Filler? No album filler for me except Bitch I'm Loca which is B-side material. Even the bonus tracks Ciao Bella and Funana are important to the era. When this album came out I thought if she never releases another album after this, I'll be happy. After the disappointing Hard Candy and MDNA, and the improvement of Rebel Heart, she FINALLY stopped singing about her divorce with this album and got back to what she does best: Experimental social justice awareness and personal self-reflection.

I love this album. Imagine refreshing your social media timelines, you’re hit & swing between hate, love, joy anger, frustration & confusion. Everything thing feels heavy, then very hollow, cold & doesn’t make sense. She hit that crazy feeling of multiple emotions at the same time or in quick succession spot on. Spend an hour looking at Twitter trending list, look at the stories & comments & the reactions it’s crazy.

It's my favorite madonna artwork. As a Brazilian it's very special for us, besides being artistically well done and as experimental as a true artist should be.

Yes, it is! I said this from the beginning, when the album first came out that she is a fkng GENIUS! I really LOVED all the different languages she spoke, I loved the use of the strings, the piano, the bongo drums, the accordion, and the different choirs. The political messaging really really hit home during the pandemic and the BLM demonstrations. It's almost like she predicted the future. It was the only music I really listened to for two years straight.

Bonus track Ciao Bella is amazing should have been on the standard to give it another lighter moment. This album takes a few listens to get in to, I appreciate that she’s still creative and experimenting.

Your reaction was identical to mine during the first listen, but now it's one of my favs. I guess it's one of those albums that need time. I still agree with your reaction to I Don't Search I Find, I highly recommend the Kue remix of it, it just takes it to another level! The International Deluxe tracks are good too, especially Ciao Bella.

I love how you said that "I Don't Search I Find" is the last track on the standard edition, since it's not true haha, "I Rise" closes out the album on both standard and deluxe editions; "Extreme Occident" and "Looking for Mercy" are deluxe tracks, alongside super deluxe "Back That Up to the Beat", "Funana", and "Ciao Bella"

Madamex is a visual album. She released 4 videos and listening the songs with visuals make them have more sense. The film The World of madamex needs to be watch also to understand the concept, meaning and use of different influences in the album . Vocoder is what is used here not auto tune. Mirwais is the responsable for the use of vocoder, also used in Music and American life.

Extreme Occident was the only additional song in the deluxe album that wasn't included in the standard version, which did also end with I Rise. There were 3 additional songs that were added to the European version: Funana, Back that up to the Beat and Ciao Bella which are worth checking out for sure.

This is her soundtrack album. It’s her play it in the background album. Diverse. It’s a theatrical acquired taste. Her world music album. Ciao Bella represents the whole vibe and should’ve been on the standard album.

I love the sound of this album. I don't particularly like it when some of the lyrics lecture on social issues, but I love the sound. The eclecticism reminds me of Blondie's AutoAmerican. The experiment with the sound and genres sometimes works and sometimes sounds iffy, but on the whole, it's still a significant Madonna album. It may not be a showcase of singles and hits, but it is quite fascinating.

What an amazing artistic statement! This is experimental, innovative, and passionate. Authenticity in its purist form-she was living in Portugal when these tracks were concieved, written, and recorded. I think this is her most mature, cerebral, and thoughtful cd of her entire career. She is still striving for artistic recognition and excellence. I enjoy your reactions immensely, Taylor, but it seems to me as though you have placed Her in a box, so that you can evaluate each cd as being too poppy, tooo formulated, or too experimental. I always appreciate any effort by any artist to be original and/or cerebral. The creative process evolves over time-it's just natural.
