It's so interesting to me that Other Wybie feels bad. He's, presumably, a creation of the Other Mother, and has some amount of free will. If he didn't, he wouldn't be feeling guilty like that. Do all of her creations have their own thoughts and feelings? Puppets don't have feelings, and I kind of thought of Other Wybie as more of a puppet for Other Mother until now

Later, when the Other Father tries to catch Coraline during the game, he also says he is sorry. So the creations do have their own feelings somewhat.

Well the beldam does control things, but the world is powered by the kids’ souls. When the beldam isn’t directly paying attention/pulling the strings I bet the souls’ influence can take over.

I got this information from TV tropes and I think its correct: they were made to love Coraline unconditionally and that backfires on the Beldam as their love overrules her control.

The theorizer made a theory that because him and the other father require more soul sand (what wybie is sculpted of and we see the doll be stuffed with it) and it holds some sort of magical properties and we also know the souls power everything except the other mother (because it is assumed that she discovered the other world and is real rather than a magical creation) so if they require more magic, they might gain a “soul” of their own or of the ghost children and would either begin to understand the truth or maybe even know the information the ghost children know

I understand that it's common in burlesque shows to have the performers arguing about their... "features" and trying to one up eachother, much like we see Spink and Forcible do on stage, wich would explain some of the weirdness.

Hi Fangirl, please consider this. One way to interpret the monologue is that Spink and Foricible are expressing their love and admiration for humanity. When taken in context of the play, it may be that Hamlet is only saying these things cause he’s being spied on, yet the only part spoken by the puppets of the beldam is the portion praising humanity. If they are being controlled by the beldam, she could attempting to portray her love of human beings and especially of children for their sense of wonder and unconditional love. This ties into what the cat says, “She wants something to love, something that isn’t her”

This is fun. I see the cat as one of those wild card characters who wants Coraline to figure it out with a few helping nudges. He wants her to think and be aware of what's really going on but if she doesn't... Also, I can understand why some folks think that Spink and Forcible don't have a relationship. They come off more as one-upping siblings than lovers.

Funny you say the Beldam's new dress is beetle-like in the back; This is the first time I'm noticing there are red panels layered in the back part of the skirt, which is very Black-Widow-Spider-esque of her...And probably not a coincidence considering what we know is coming of the Beldam.

I personally think that book version of Spink and Forcable are a couple but I dunno about the movie version though we never really see them act this jealous in the real world soo maybe it's for contrast or to get Coraline's attention

Same! Cat is just in it for himself; he's playing a game with the Beldame. He'll do whatever he needs to do just to make sure the Other Mother doesn't win, including but not limited to helping Coraline when she messes up.

I also see the cat as more neutral, I think there’s a lot of room for theories (as the theorizer has made and I find his coraline videos so cool). But I kind of see him as a cat who knows a lot of about the other world but is just doing whatever he wants, sometimes he’ll help coraline a bit by giving her information through a “riddle” or by sticking by her side and sometimes he’ll just observe something he knows isn’t quite right but won’t bother to help coraline in that moment

I love your interpretation ! Being able to see things from a different angle is the best part of story telling ! To me the cat always felt like a this contrast to the Beldam. The other mother at first seems very trust worthy. She’s her mum but like way better , always saying what coraline what’s to hear and always giving her what she wants. While the cat is the complete opposite he’s this , he’s this powerless mangy little thing that she originally didn’t like. He’s telling things but never the things she wants to hear.

when I was a kid I always thought S and F fighting was such a strange thing and didn't understand it but now that I know more about burlesque it makes sense that it's only meant to be comical and not a real fight. at least in my opinion. burlesque is supposed to be comical (and sexy but in a silly way) to quote, Burlesque means 1. an absurd or comically exaggerated imitation of something, especially in a literary or dramatic work; a parody.

I love how you pointed out that Miss Spink has button eyes with blue eye shadow on them! I had never noticed that before! Side note: when I first saw this movie when it came out I thought that the reason the theater was filled with literal dogs was a play on how men were referred to as (word that rhymes with corny) dogs when viewing scantily clad women. I’m sure I was wrong as a kid but I will admit it was a theory way back then lol 😂

While you were mentioning the subtlety of the other world, I got to thinking what if button eyes=death? Let's say the Beldam is just after your soul, she can get it the easy way (for her) or the hard way (Limbo Pink Palace). This would also tie in the food of the dead (once you eat you can't leave), the just general afterlifey-purgatory vibe of the other world (time dilation, mortician tools, bugs, fog, ECT.) Edit: But it does feel like it has to be a choice either way, the Beldam can't just kill or trap Coraline. Coraline either chooses to die or chooses to run into the Limbo Pink Palace

Maybe the backstage dogs had a dog on stand by to remove the old lady skins. So while we are so focused on the ladies the dogs could quickly pull away the skin fabric. Coraline wouldn't notice because it's one of a few misdirection used by both magicians and theaters. They make you focus on one thing well doing another. Basically now you see it now you don't. I might be wrong and it was just edited out to reduce the clutter on set

I wonder if the old lady skins were dragged off stage by the terriers after falling to the floor? It feels possible with what we see the dogs do in the rest of the scene. Same with high dives, the dogs dragged them off stage somewhere.

I'm not really sure how your interpretation is Hamlet thinking he's being spied on; can you clarify? When I read this, he is lamenting that even though the world is beautiful, the air is clear, sun is bright, he has lost his joy and happiness; the people around him all seem to be perfectly happy and productive, but when he himself looks around, he sees nothing of value. He's being sarcastic when he calls them angels and gods. _Lately - though I don't know when - I have lost my happiness and stopped doing the things I usually do; and this lack of feeling within me is so strong that the entire world seems like a lifeless stage; the air all around - you can see the sky above you and there, the sun is shining so brightly - it all looks like nothing but polluted smoke. And look at the people! How talented they are, and how much they have accomplished! Look at the way they move about, perfect in shape and performance! They see and understand everything as well as any god! The most beautiful things in the world! The flawless creation! But for all of that perfection, it's all just dust._ Edit to clarify that I am certainly not a lit major; I have never read or seen this play, so I am looking at this passage as a standalone with no context.

Where do you think the other mother and other father are and what do you think they are doing, when Coraline comes in to them not being home? Another thing, I always felt that both the other old ladies sounded like the Beldam after they changed into the younger versions of themselves. It kind of sounded like the Beldem trying to play both parts and sound exactly as the old ladies sound, but doing so makes their voices sound off

The Other Mother's creations need to have some level of consciousness in order to appear more lifelike and believable to Coraline, which means they are able to deviate from the Other Mother's control.

The beings are more innocent, until they have buttons, and then they are dressed more provocatively. Like mom in the white sweater, then the polkadot pin up girl dress, and dad in dad clothes,then in a robe, or Spink and Forcible in stage dresses, then in burlesque costumes. Interestimg that their younger selves arent dressed sexy but the older ones are.
