On that sketchbook note; USE it and GET DIRTY with it! Make dumb drawings, make BAD drawings, and do it with ink so you can't erase. It will help you build line confidence and ability to iterate. Don't buy a super fancy leather-bound sketchbook if you aren't going to use it, and these are meant for practice, if you want to make a knockout piece, bust out the bristol board and erasers, or spend a whole day in front of your tablet.

Yeah that's one thing I feel like more artists need to remember. You aren't making sketches to make a finished product in one go it's just a physical kind of brainstorming or even exercise.

Hence why I have two separate sketchbooks, one for fvckin around and the other for when I feel like making a good piece but don't feel like drawing digital.

I'm prone to writing block, so one time for the sake of writing something, I wrote about a writer with writer's block, sat at his desk, how he felt, just painted the scene. I'd say it didn't help, but I was writing something, so it kinda worked as a prompt. And if this little exercise is repeated from time to time when the block strikes, it could be fun to look back on what you produced to express that block, what you wrote, or what visuals you painted. Main thing is it scratches the itch to produce something in a way that can be cathartic and fun :)

A little ago I had my confidence torn apart and for some reason I decided to create an alter ego to try and get through it... I honestly thought I was crazy for doing such a thing but the result was so many times better than I could've ever done under my usual alias (partially because I stopped worrying about what other people would say) that I'm glad I tried it and now, seeing that other people do it too makes me feel a little less crazy and more like it was a wonderful idea Thank you so much for your videos, they always motivate me to push through and keep on trying!

On the topic of making art for yourself and only yourself; for a really long time I've made art just for me out of that fear of rejection/harsh criticism and it's not until im getting close to the end of my journey in art school that im confident enough to start showing my work and working on projects to show to others. Art block is one hell of an obstacle and it can keep you down for years if you don't know how to get around/through it. Thanks for the advice Toniko, you've been a great help to me and alot of artists/animators the world over

Important note about the whole alter ego idea, it can certainly work but as was briefly mentioned in the video, its really important to make sure you know what you're doing with it. Personally I tried it and got myself into some pretty rough shit at a young age. It solved the artblock issue but it brought up some new ones. All in all I'd be careful with anything that involves messing with how you act for even short periods of time.

Committing now to lower my standards and make dumb stuff 🖐😩 I've found that I open up and have the most fun whenever I'm tackling a new kind of problem. It fuels my mind and gets me excited to do the work I "market" myself for and helps me look at problems I'm used to and bored with in a new way! I'm Learning 3D modeling right now and it has been really fun and mentally stimulating :D

Doing idiotic things is most of what I do , I probably could not make a single animation if I went full serious with it. Endless private jokes is what makes me create stuff 😅 That is why the vibe of my animations is horror humor.
