I’m of the opinion that your vlogs have never been better/more entertaining. I enjoy the Seattle content…so many others are in LA and I also like your more mature content like your DIY projects. As for the main channel, I like hearing about your Airbnb because it’s been a saga, but don’t care much about random rentals around the country because I use hotels when I travel.

Personally too, even though the rentals are really cool, they’re way out of my price range and I don’t own an Airbnb so it’s just not relevant to me.

I think the lower vlog views are a combination of 1) shorter story lines and 2) story lines that don’t have as many highs and lows which makes them less engaging. Examples of old story lines: renovating the Palm Springs house, jaw surgery, and picking a place to live (LA, NY, or Seattle). They were all story lines that spanned many videos and had a lot of engaging highs and lows. Compare this to recent story lines: building a shelf, getting Botox, and picking tile. Storylines that only last a video or two and don’t have the stakes that the older storylines did.

Such a great point! also the relatability - everyone can relate to creating your dream, picking a place to live, medical stuff - but a shelf, botox, picking a tile, finding the relatability in that story is what could get more views. Not a criticism - noting this for my own content stuff.

Personally I like the vlogs better and don’t really watch the main channel much anymore because the house/real estate content is getting repetitive (at least to me). I’m more interested in the tech (gadgets, cars, etc) and the videos of like if something is worth paying for (like equinox, cruise, private airport experience). I think doing videos that aren’t strictly like rentals for the main channel could help, and possibly changing the thumbnails for the vlogs so it’s not the same look for each thumbnail (like different location, different colors, font, so that it when someone first sees it, it doesn’t look like the same vlog they watched 3 days ago). Just my opinion.

Yet ALL Shelby’s videos are worth watching (heck, even just to make sure she doesn’t stop 😂). Sometimes my feeling about the Checked-in vids are: the thumbnails don’t do the videos justice (or aren’t focused on the ‘big thing’). For instance: that power-couple in ATL, [IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THAT (“This treehouse makes $700k/yr”) DO WATCH THAT ONE!!! IT WAS SO MUCH MORE!!!] It’s was a WHOLE VILLAGE OF WTF? CREATIONS…ONE WAS A DAMN BUS IN A TREE LOL…like (5-7?) different, unique, eye-popping concepts & the story of how this couple created it (& damn, the wife’s sense of decor was 🤯). It was a mini-master class in business/time-efficiency. I watched that & was a little saddened Shelby’s thumbnail didn’t communicate how amazing of a discovery that was (& they were) & HOW MUCH was in that video. (Shelby girl, we love that you’re so humble 💁‍♂️ so talented, such an impressive content creator & discovery sleuth). There really is something special in every find you show us (I don’t actually care about, first & foremost, how much $ the owners made). I hope you don’t lose sight of how unique the stuff you find (& your enjoyable presentations are)! EDIT: oh, you’re talking about this in the vid (I’m just watching now). Your thumbnails!! My thoughts about that ATL video were “oh no, people are going to miss out on seeing this because the thumbnail is totally underselling it” (& therefore, some people might even skip it just because, even if they WOULD watch it & WOULD like it…they’d also naturally-assume a lot of people aren’t going to see it …& also therefore will have less people to talk about it with…so there’s yet another reason to skip it in the first place). If that makes any sense? 🙄 I’m probably more likely to click on something I can tell is going to other suck people in with FOMO (including those who don’t know you already). Heck, there’s a political news channel I watch who’s titles are so-incredibly-clickbaity….there’s always good content in it…but omg the titles are soooo stretched. Ultimately, I don’t even want him to change & I’m much more happy knowing the algorithm will push it. Also another successful content creator (I forget who, not someone I watch) was talking about how he “thinks of the thumbnail first” & then creates the video around THAT (so he’s not trying to slap it on at the last minute)…this is simply his process focused on videos-that-succeed. One thing for sure: I don’t think you need to clickbait anything (but definitely don’t hold back touting these original ideas you find!) YOUR VIDEOS ARE NEVER A LET DOWN.

It was really interesting reading the comments on this video and seeing what other people think. Personally for me, you are one of the only KZbinrs I watch consistently and definitely one of my favorites. I’ve always enjoyed vlogs more than main channel videos, so I watch those a lot more frequently. I actually love your content since you moved to Seattle it definitely makes my life and where I am as a 25-year-old feel a lot more normal. I also love your candor, your openness about money and how much you make and how much the Airbnb makes, etc. and things like that is really refreshing. In general I’m just interested and so I pretty much watch all your vlogs. As for the main channel videos, I don’t watch those as often, and maybe like you said because you give snippets of things in the vlog channel I don’t always find that I need to, but the content itself is interesting. I also disagree that you’re chasing views and popularity. I don’t see that, I just see that you’re trying to find your niche and it’s actually really cool to see you explore a bunch of different things. I hope the overall feedback is more constructive than condemning and helps you figure out what to do next ❤

Vlog Channel Thoughts: For me, I find the content to be pretty repetitive so I'm starting to watch less of them. I sometimes feel like all the vlogs follow a similar formula of packing for a trip, making breakfast, editing/video planning, making home reno decisions, going shopping, a workout and then one additional piece which ends up being what you title the vlog. I still try to watch as many as I can but I'd be lying if I said they weren't feeling redundant. Main Channel Thoughts: The real estate/airbnb/investment properties just doesn't resonate with me as a 27 year old. You did do hotel review videos that I actually enjoyed - that's usually what I book when traveling so it's useful info. I also thoroughly enjoyed the apartment hunting videos, the cruise video or just interesting tech

I personally like your vlogs. They’re authentic and you don’t try to put on an act. You speak candidly about regrets, money, business drama etc which is I think what people enjoy hearing about. Your videos about ‘Airbnb drama’ or ‘why I regret this’ etc will just do better because it’s more juicy. People love putting on a video like that in the background and just listening to the story haha. But obviously that can’t be every video.

I think you should have a "worth it" series on your main channel. You can choose something like food, dessert, airline classes, airport lounges, widely used products, etc. Have three price point and compare each to one another and give your opinion on which price point is the most worth it. Similar to the way BuzzFeed did with their worth it episodes.

Honestly I like the vlogs of yours better than anyone else. I have been watching all the vlogs and main channel videos since 2020. I find it entertaining. Being a seattle resident I love to see seattle through your lens. Like many have already pointed out the main channel is becoming more of rentals which I feel is not your experience and something that you are reporting on. I feel more of your experience on things would be something I would love to see (like tesla charging situation in seattle or something like that). I love your newbie approach to building a new furniture (again your experience is what I like).

Shelby, I adore your vlogs and I don't feel any less interest in them regardless if you're based in L.A./Palm Springs or Seattle. Views may be down currently because a lot of vloggers tend to produce a lot of content at the end of the year (Vlogmas, etc.) and therefore it becomes a bit more difficult to keep up with videos when there's more of them vying for your attention. I appreciate how sincere, genuine, and honest you are and I hope you don't feel too compelled to change your already winning formula. I'm sure there's a natural ebb and flow to viewership, so it may not be worth it to get too worried about numbers.

I feel like the videos that do well on your channel from my own personal observation are the ones where you provide your opinion on an accepted idea/trend (moving from CA to TX/ van life) or where you have some "secret" information (how much videos make, your airbnb setbacks, how this airbnb makes so much money)... and so forth. I think you do those videos really well because you are personable and offer interesting information or a new perspective on something.

I have been an avid viewer for years now, and i watch all of your vlog videos and most of your main channel videos. I honestly love how raw and mature your content is on your vlog channel. I love learning about Seattle and seeing what it's like to live there. I really enjoyed your travel era, it's cool to see different areas of the country. I also loved the renovation videos when you bought the Palm Springs house! Your main channel videos are interesting and very good quality, though I tend to lean towards more raw and unrefined content. It's interesting seeing different types of Airbnbs, though most of them are unattainable for me and my budget. For your main channel, I would be more interested in travel content, like airport lounges, different modes of traveling, nomadic lifestyle, and finance.

As a 27 year old I find myself spending more time on tik tok and less on KZbin because I just have less time in my day to consume content since I’m working full time. When I do get on KZbin I gravitate more towards everyday vlog content and steer away from more “curated” content like your main channel videos, not sure why but it’s just what I want to watch right now.

Someone else commented that your vlogs don’t seem like you’re our friend, but more like this is your job, which really describes the issue in my opinion. Someone like Tara Michelle has amazingly well edited vlogs that feel like she’s just a friend you’re catching up with. It feels like she’d be vlogging even if she didn’t make money doing it. It’s also her main focus, she doesn’t split her time and viewers between a vlog channel and a main channel. You might want to consider consolidating your channels and putting more effort into your vlogs (which I feel are better and more fun to watch than you main channel content) and you can sprinkle in “main channel” videos whenever. There is a sense of feeling like you are really just doing this for the money that makes it not super fun to watch for me, even if that’s completely not true. It’s just for some reason how your videos comes off for me. It’s possible your outsourcing editing, obsessing over the best shots, trying to always do something cool and new is actually backfiring and making you seem less authentic. It’s hard to pinpoint it, but just some thoughts!

The difference between your NYC vlogs and your current vlogs, I feel, is that the 'exploring' element is missing. People LOVE NYC vlogs and videos because it's a fun place to explore. When you were there, you were constantly exloring and filming. But Seattle is also a great place to explore (especially outdoors, it beats NYC and most states any day). But you don't showcase much exploring of the Seattle or pugent sound area. I know that's hard to do right now with the weather (I'm in Bellevue), but even vlogs showcasing places like Bainbridge, or Snoqualmie falls, etc. I think throwing in some content (especially in Spring and Summer) exploring beautiful areas, small towns like port angeles, etc. could help to bring in a new audience, too! The amount of unique airbnb's you can find in Washington is insane (since we're surrounded by so much beautiful scenary). It could be interesting to start a little Airbnb series where you stay a couple nights in unique places in Washington and adventure around the area. People LOVE watching stuff like that!

I think moving to Seattle could be part of why views are down. I started watching your videos a couple months before COVID started, and I loved your LA content. Angelenos are often stereotyped as being unrelatabke and kind of vapid, but you stood out because your content and personality is genuine. Despite many flaws of LA, there is still something so beautiful about the vibes it gives off. I’ve never been to California, but SoCal nature and landscape is incredible, and I think a lot of us liked experiencing that through your videos. No matter where you live, I am still going to stick around because I like you, and I like your content. Also, your videography is out of this world. I mean, for instance in the room makeover video for me it was really fun to watch the vlogs about it, but if I were new to your videos and had only watched that one, I wouldn't even know you have a vlog channel where I could watch like a "behind the scenes" of all the makeover! Or if you make a video about how much your airbnb makes etc, make sure to link on the screen other videos about the palm springs house... I think that's a way to get more people engaged in the type of content you're trying to do

Something else to note: if your whole video was about renovation content, it likely would do well. But the reason your last video about picking tile didn’t do great is likely because the entire video was about completely unrelated stuff, and at a random point you talked about the tile for like a couple minutes. A lot of people who clicked for that likely didn’t stick around to try and find where in the vlog you were finally going to talk about the tile. And even then, it wasn’t truly renovation content. It was just talking about different tiles, which is like such a small amount of content compared to, for instance, a whole video discussing in detail what the plans are for the Reno, why you’re doing it, timeline/pricing, etc.

Maybe you could do more things in Seattle/WA rather than so much renovations in your apartment? I feel like most people don't do renovations in their apartment since its not their forever home, so its not as relatable. I found some of it interesting, but I think travel and experiencing new things is more fun, enjoyable, & relatable since many people travel to have experiences; I think humans in general are wired to want to experience new things. There is a lot of hidden gems in Seattle & the overall state of WA (I went to school at Bastyr University in WA); would love to go back and explore more there!

I think it's that the airbnb stuff is repetitive now. Airbnb in general has been forgotten because the hotels are becoming more competitive. 2 or 3 rooms at a hotel are still cheaper than an airbnb in my experience. And with money being tighter for many it might be better to share cool budget friendly getways. Just my 2 cents.

I always watch your vlogs, sometimes it's going to just be in the background. As a creator, you motivate me so much to get more done in a day. For your main channel, honestly, I'm just not that motivated to click titles about AirBnB or how to make money with property. It was interesting at first but after a few of those, I think we get the gist. I like when you explore new products/ technologies that seem like they have some relevance to an ordinary millennial's life. And of course, some more aspirational technologies as well. That said, I love your videos and appreciate the work behind them. So I even watch the videos I'm not that interested in...eventually. Bottom line, make me wonder "do I want or need that?" and I will click.

Part of the problem with you in Seattle is that maybe you know it so well that it doesn’t seem fascinating to you, like being in LA or a new city does. When in New York, you seemed wide-eyed and excited about your new surroundings, and since I like to travel a lot, I like to put myself in the position of whatever KZbinr I’m watching. And I am always curious about where you will go next- I LOVE the urban nomad stuff! I would love to see you travel more. The DIY Craft stuff is also more fun to watch. I notice the same kind of enthusiasm you have about that. Maybe visit with some expert crafters and artists and film some of that, you trying your hand at it and learning a skill. You are great at being low key and down to earth, with no fakeness, but if the subject or location is visibly dull to you, it will be dull to us. In short, we’re excited when you’re excited. I guess I'm saying have more fun! Another thing I’ve notices with various KZbin personalities is that once they get into relationships, their behavior changes, and often the relationship becomes a big part of it, which can be problematic. When you watch a couple onscreen, it’s possible to feel like you’re intruding into their relationship, or that the audience-presenter relationship is now diluted or inhibited with a third party that may or may not enhance the experience. Episodes that build toward a goal are more compelling, like your Palm Springs videos. It’s all about stories and storytelling, which you are great at, so maybe pick your stories better with that in mind. Keep at it though, you’re one of the greats! ;)

I picked up watching the vlogs again once you moved to Seattle (personally kind of over the LA scene). I love the city and it's fun getting to see it through your and Monica's eyes! It definitely felt like you weren't into the city at first, but I've loved seeing you get more comfortable/more excited about the city and really leaning in, like you said. Anything about designing, DIYing, buying furniture for, or renovating your spaces is always fun to watch! I also really appreciate your openness and candor about the financial side of things and even the lows of your Airbnb experience. More Q&A's too - those are fun to watch or can just have on in the background if doing other things! :)

You are one of the few KZbinrs that I watch everything that gets posted. Your vlogs are actually my favorite because they are calming, interesting, and motivating at the same time.. watching these get me in a good head space! I originally started watching because you had info on living in LA when I was preparing to make the move out there but I'm still watching mainly for the vlogs. The only reason I don't watch for a while is that I have busy periods of time where I forget KZbin exists.. but then I come back and watch everything (like I am now!) I often forget to like or engage so reminding us to do that might help? I don't think it's annoying to ask for that stuff. Algorithms are so frustrating but I hope this doesn't stop you from making content!

I'm subscribed to both the vlog and the main channel, I live in Seattle, I'm 28. I wanted to provide some candid feedback about why I think your videos aren't doing as well. I think that like you said before, you need to find a genre and stick to it so the algorithm knows who to promote your videos to. I started following because of your Palm Springs renovation because I follow a lot of interior design content however that content has been few and far between since. I also find that sometimes your videos are a bit click baity and I don't love that or they're overhyped in the description and then underwhelming. I also don't want to be rude but I'm not sure I relate to you as much, mostly because your lifestyle and spending seem wildly different than the life I live. Another thought is that you run your channel like a business, which is fine behind the scenes and then mention its not doing well. I feel like a customer rather than a friend who's catching up on your life

The videos have become singular and formulaic. Having videos that leads you one into the other in a series, can draw the views in and make them stay. Your smart you’ll figure it out. Getting past these moments are what make the artist.

Hey Shelby, I’m one of the people who haven’t watched for a few months but I am back now 😅 I just wanted to say that I haven’t stopped watching because of the quality or quantity of your content. I’ve stopped watching because I’ve been busy with assignments, exams, and working which leaves me with no time to watch any KZbin videos, not just yours! The actual quality and content of your videos are my favourite and you are one of my favourite KZbinrs because you’re so creative and genuine

I think one pattern of why people like to watch others is that they like to learn from other people, especially amateurs rather than professionals. This is because they can relate to them and think they can do what the person does. This is why I was so attracted to your vlogs when you renovated your Palm Springs house. I am of the same age and gender as you, and I was amazed to see you tackle such a big project without any prior experience. People love to see when people without experience tackle and accomplish something big, and it is even better when they show the mistakes they made along the way. KZbin stars that show their imperfections and are honest are very liked and make people feel good about themselves, as they can learn valuable information from them.

Have you ever worked with one of those youtube reps? Not exactly sure of their exact title but I sometimes hear other youtubers talking about working with youtube reps that give them tips and tricks on how to improve their yt performance. Personally, I love your vlogs and think they are consistently entertaining. I love that you show so much of your content creation process. You’re so intentional with your videos, and I love watching your process. So many other vloggers content have been reduced to TJ hauls, watch me work out, look at what I bought…which you throw in here and there but it’s not a highlight reel of your consumption. I hope that makes sense 😅 I say keep asking us all to like and subscribe. I forget to like videos but always do when reminded and hopefully that helps!

I enjoy both your vlogs and your main channel but really enjoy your vlogs for the everyday content. I really enjoy the renovation videos and when you are building your own furniture. I’ve enjoy the Checked In videos showing Airbnbs even though I can’t afford those right now. I think it’s great you are showing a lot of Seattle because there aren’t as many Seattle vloggers as there are in New York. It’s nice to see more of the northwest not just because I live here but because it isn’t always shown how beautiful it is here. People still think it rains all the time.

Hi! Follower for a few years now. Your vlogs are definitely better than ever! But I don't really watch your main channel stuff anymore. I agree with what someone already said, that the content seems repetitive and also unrelatable. I know some people come here and watch things for the fantasy of it (ie you traveling all the time and staying in cool places) but I'm ready for your next move. I think it would be cool for you to do a series on non-traditional jobs/careers that are more easily attainable than going to college but still lead you to financial success (honestly thinking of my own career as a piano technician.) If you need other ideas on this topic you if this interests you, let me know :)

I enjoy your vlogs! I'd love more exploring Seattle content! I think we don't get enough of the city :) For me, it feels like we get a lot of at home content, which can get repetitive. I was excited to watch the vlog about choosing tile for the palm springs house, but I felt it was a very short part of the vlog. Maybe more content from what the title is selling viewers Also, I'm not interested in Airbnb or random properties I'll never stay in, since I stay in hotels, so those videos aren't appealing to me. But I love traveling, and I like when you explore the areas around the Airbnbs you're checking out

Solar panels would be a great addition for sure, but just make sure you are doing your due diligence and research on the companies that install them (specifically the fine print in the contracts). There are plenty of horror stories on local news channels about how these companies rip people off. I would personally piece together a system by buying each components from a high quality manufacturer separately (i.e. German and European manufacturers in general have a better track record since they focus their houses to be net zero for some time now), and just get a reputable electrician to install everything for you.

I just read through all the comments and the thing I realized most is that you cannot please everyone. Some people said they liked the tech stuff, but I personally wasn't that crazy about it. Some say the main channel videos are better because of the quality, but I feel like they are so overproduced it feels like a mini documentary I sometimes don't want to watch. That's a compliment on the quality, but also just that everything isn't for everyone. I'm a consistent watcher of your vlogs. I like the casual feel and I don't mind the repetition. It's just you living life and you can't ALWAYS be doing something huge. It's not anything to do with Seattle for me. It's possible that you haven't been attracting NEW viewers at a very fast rate and older viewers are losing interest? As people might naturally tend to do over time. That's the only thing I can think of. The main channel is similar to your life (and the vlog channel) in that it has cycled through different topics based on your interests. So the people who came for Tesla may no longer be interested, but some of them become interested in your new topics and you attract others with those. If you go 100% one topic niche you lose steam so I don't think that's the way to go. Your 10/10 video got 1.8 views in an hour! There is so much content out there and you got 1k people to be interested in you in one hour. I will never get that many views on most videos in my lifetime. You are doing great! The algorithm, trends, and people in general can be finicky, but I think the only thing you can count on is just being true to yourself. Do what brings you joy and if you can please as many people as you have been along the way that is great. PS: I think you don't sleep well in a house because you have spent so many years in apartments. You will have a house one day that you live in full time. You'll get used to it and it will be FINE!

I enjoy the Seattle content because I live a few hours away and find cool places to go on my future day trips. When I first subscribed to both channels, your content was about photography, being a youtuber etc. I like your vlogs because watching you be productive by shooting and editing gives me motivation to do those tasks. Making more videos about your gear, editing process etc would interest me but not everyone who watches your videos is a creator.

I always enjoy watching your vlogs and I watch you because you’re a self starter / female powerhouse . However , I do think that the videos are getting repetitive and lack engagement. I noticed myself being ok with missing a vlog at times because it’s likely similar to the one before. Seattle , LA ,and Palms springs all have really fun things to do and I think that you should start to explore a bit more and let us in on the journey 😊 I don’t think it would hurt to have you engage more in the comments or do giveaways … even if it’s just a Starbucks gift card.

Hi, I don't think it is because you are in Seattle (i personally like for you that you settled down a bit) but I think your problem is that you don't have a niche. Your videos are all over the place ( esp. main channel) whereas before you had one steady projet (the Palm springs airbnb) that we were all excited to follow and interested in the updates. Now you just travel and make one video and move on, like yes that is nice but no offense, i feel like you are talking to us all the time and i would rather see you actually do something or have conversations with people while you are on these trips (sam, monica, your assistant, your parents etc) rather than an internal monologe..

I think viewers would appreciate seeing a more personal side to you, at least that’s what I’m drawn to in more vlog type creators. When you are only showing clips of you editing, doing makeup, or talking about what you want to do (film for main channel) it is harder to connect and engage your audience. Getting personal is scary, for sure. You’re putting yourself out there. But if you want those views, being vulnerable is what an audience connects with. I think a Q&A video with Monica or Sam would be somewhere to start.

I’m really sorry to hear that your views are down, it breaks my heart to hear you ask why! I’m biased because you’re my favorite KZbinr, I watch every single video you put out. I do prefer the vlogs because it makes me feel like I’m hanging out with a friend. I feel like the subject matter of your videos is really interesting, and I can see how you’re growing and becoming a better editor/producer. I think big life changes are always more fun to watch because change is more interesting to people. But I’d hate to see you change your life style to accommodate to the viewers. I personally just want to see you happy and living the life you enjoy. I realize this comment probably wasn’t helpful….but you’ll always have a viewer in me! Maybe more interactions on socials and commenting back more on KZbin. A lot of KZbinrs have been doing "small business hauls" which are always fun to watch. We can connect with you, and each other! Another cool idea is doing a challenge with you. Workout, renovation, building an item, anything, really. Don't stress about it too much, the views on youtube always have their ebbs and flows!
