Might want to consider editing misleading video title. Nowhere in his interview does Otis say the words - "I taught Elvis to sing". But that's jus me. I'd be embarrassed to have misleading title on a video. It's one of the oldest myths in Rock & Roll history that Elvis learned to sing this way from Otis Blackwell. It's ridiculous and embarrassing for people that keep pushing that. Many of Elvis's recordings prior to him ever doing Otis Blackwell songs are evidence that he already had that swooping hiccuping, Blue Note in his voice, going back to nearly 2 years earlier. Most people that research this realize that. This is exactly why Otis says in this interview "either Elvis sounded like me or I sounded like him". Otis also said in another separate interview that he was told by others in the industry at that time in 1956 "about a new singer named Elvis that had a very similar voice to his". That's important. Otis was convinced he should push his songs Elvis's way, because "... it would not take much for me to alter my style to get Elvis to record my song since we already sounded similar", another quote from one of his many interviews. Key here is Otis admittedly acknowledged that Elvis naturally had a similar voice to his own. One of the reasons is because they both had similar musical backgrounds both of them influenced by Country, Gospel and Blues. Otis demos were a "vocal guide" (same as with any demos done for any singers). But in Elvis case, not so much that he needed someone like Otis Blackwell for him to learn to sing like that, lol. But rather they needed "each other" as Kindred Spirits (as Otis implied in yet another separate interview) because Otis wanted to get his music out there, and felt Elvis was naturally one of the perfect people talent-wise to "put the same feeling into the songs as I did". Folks need to research / read / pay better attention to his interviews. No excuse for ignorance. They're all out there for people to look up and read themselves. The whole "Otis taught Elvis to sing" culture over years is funny. Otis was fantastic Talent and great songwriter, but people get carried away, bordering on sounding silly. It's ignorance of music history and disrespect to not only Elvis, but to Otis to twist his words to imply something he never actually said.

Even Quincy jones confirmed Otis taught him
@loveandloss635
@loveandloss635 2 жыл бұрын
@@mightybasedzao3057 uh Quincy Jones is not a credible source. He's a great legendary talented producer, but he's been known to talk a lot of s*** over the years. Meaning he ran his mouth in some interviews about stuff, but other people in the industry said Quincy got some things wrong, he wasn't always telling it accurate. He just told them the way he wanted to. When he brought up Elvis and Otis that was a prime example. Quincy completely made that up. Quincy's family members have said he's been showing signs of early dementia, (which would explain his silly inaccurate comments about Elvis and Otis in that interview last year). Otis himself said in many interviews he never even met Elvis. (Read that last sentence again. It's important) Otis couldn't have taught Elvis to sing since he admitted they never were even in the same room together. Quincy Jones doesn't speak for Otis. Otis spoke for himself. Otis never said the words "I taught Elvis how to sing". What he did say many times, including in this interview, is that he and Elvis had similar voices. That is true. He also said in another interview that before he even sent Elvis a demo, he had already been told about a new singer named Elvis that had a remarkably similar vocal style to his own. That's the whole reason Otis decided to start sending his songs to Elvis in the first place. Anyone that knows how to do basic research would know this. Going to have to do a lot better than using Quincy Jones as a source. As I already mentioned above, Otis spoke for himself pretty well. He said "Elvis and I had similar voices so he copied the demo close to my original Style", but Otis never said "I taught Elvis how to sing".

He did because Elvis mimicking Otis Blackwell
@loveandloss635
@loveandloss635 2 жыл бұрын
@ Willie Lee , gee that's interesting, because Otis himself said - "Elvis and I sounded alike. So it was really easy to write songs or do demos for him because I would try to sing them, like the way I thought he would sing them" ( - Otis Blackwell quote Source - Fayetteville North Carolina Observer Times newspaper 1989) "I always tried stay as close to that style that Elvis liked as I could when I made a demo, to give me the greatest chance of him wanting to record it". - Otis also said he was told by people at Shalimar Music and Hill & Range that Elvis was a new singer that had a naturally similar voice to Otis' so they convinced Otis he should start sending his demos to Elvis. (El Toro records interview 1979). ------------------------------ Sure sounds like Otis is admitting he would try to mimic Elvis' voice on the demo's. Especially since he acknowledged they both actually had similar voices. But keep pretending Otis never said this if you want.

Otis never met Elvis and he certainly never taught Elvis how to sing as Otis voice in no way sounded like Elvis's voice whatsoever. Elvis recorded songs before recording Ottis' songs and Elvis's singing and style has always been the same. Elvis himself said he sounds like no one! Ottis never gave Elvis Presley singing lessons as they never met in person. In fact Elvis was influenced by Dean Martin's singing style. It's obvious Ottis is not telling the truth as he knows Elvis was a better singer and had better range than him. No way on earth Ottis has the voice nor the talent to teach Elvis how to sing because Elvis was born gifted to sing like a King. Ottis singing voice on this video is proof he sounds nothing like Elvis otherwise if Elvis imitated Ottis' less than average singing it be evident in Elvis's voice and style thank God it wasn't. Ottis wasn't the only one that written hit songs for Elvis that produced a style of singing that Ottis never had in the first place because simply Ottis was not a brilliant singer and artist like Elvis the King Of Rock n Roll. Ottis was simply jealous of King Elvis period!

IF he sent sound demos then yeah Elvis patterned after him, and other artists-- its pretty striking. Did he pay him for the songs? IF so then I honestly think its inspiration, all musicians and visual artists too, do get inspired and copy, THEN you are to make it your own...and I think Elvis did that. Sadly because of rampant racism at that time- Otis couldn't have, and wasn't allowed to break through to a general audience. It was even enforced separation of races at shows... Even Elvis was pressured and called names to tone down his moves and music ....he toned down his appearances for TV and to break through. I would have liked to see Otis in his youth to see if he also had charisma as well as his vocal skill. Some black musicians were able to break through- including Little Richard, Tina Turner, BB King etc. and created change as times changed.... Rather than fighting about this now, why not insure that musicians and writers are paid fairly for their talents and given a chance regardless of race.

The title is clickbait as Otis never says, or ever said, he "taught Elvis how to sing." Blackwell was a great song writer but he wouldn't, nor could he, ever make such a claim as Elvis was singing long before he recorded "Don't Be Cruel" and had hits before and after he recorded the song that weren't written by Blackwell. Elvis obviously liked Otis' style but in the 50s songwriters would often submit demos to artists in the artist's style to show them the possibilities of the song.

It’s more important to examine why it didn’t work out. Why this black man wasn’t given the opportunity to release the songs himself, or given the same team and effort of promotion or marketing as Elvis or any other white artist. Racism, whether you like to acknowledge it or not, played a part. Elvis was famously sought after and signed by people who famously did not want a “coloured man”, but a white man who sounded “coloured”. We see this in todays music industry, black songwriters who aspire to release music themselves are continuously pigeonholed and held back as songwriters or backing vocalist, as they are encouraged to give their words and aesthetic to non-black artists, often without a single recognition or their permission. This is not up for debate. He may have been ok with it, he most likely didn’t have much - this was an opportunity. Not mad at Otis, but he and so many black artists are the true pioneers of rock and roll and they are not in the Rock and roll hall of fame. They do not have movies made after them, they are not mentioned in the documentaries, and most have died penniless while their white counterparts who they nurtured and to fame died wealthy.

@@rockinbones8508 But he only had those opportunities because he was white. And even then, there were many people who wanted Elvis in jail for “dancing like n***,” and that is a direct quote from my great grandma. If a white man who people were making a shit ton of money off had to go to war to clean up his image for “acting black,” you should be able to envision how impossible it was for actual black people to break into the music space. His music was not original, it was to white audiences, but he was not the inventor of this style of music. And you can look up Elvis saying that himself, a reporter once called him “the king of rock n roll” and Elvis said that he wasn’t the king, Fats Domino was the king in Elvis’s eyes. It is okay to love Elvis and his music, but ignoring the political climate at the time to justify that love is just wrong. Elvis became famous because he delivered black music to white audiences in a way that they could digest. He was only able to do it because he was a white man, not because he was original. What was actually original about Elvis was that he was the first white man to seek fame using music like that. He was not a racist man in the traditional sense, but he and his team did take a lot of advantage. He was a pioneer in the way that he was not afraid to show the world that he loved people of all colors, and that was frightening to many people. But just because he grew up with black people doesn’t make the injustices okay, there is inspiration and there is mimicry. Many of his songs were just that. Also, do not put down Otis Blackwell. Some of Elvis’s biggest hits were Otis’s. We would not know Elvis if it weren’t for black artists. You can deny it if that’s what you need, but you can literally look up who the writers and original artists behind his songs were. You cannot say Elvis was more famous because he was a better performer, when he wouldn’t have had anything to perform without black people paving the way. America owes a lot of credit to black people for pop culture, and Otis deserves credit too.

It was called Rockabilly. There's no problem with a white kid singing anyway he wants. You have a problem with that? Elvis said he listened to Rhythm and Blues all the time in interviews. He said his influences, both black and white. He wasn't just a white kid doing black music so white people cam enjoy it. That's simple thinking. White people loved Louis Jordan, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole etc . The problem is you couldn't be sexual. White adults didn't want Elvis anymore than they wanted Little Richard. @Joy Harrison Elvis Presley was already a huge and controversial star before "All Shook Up" & "Don't be Cruel". You really should do your homework before you make these kind of comments. Elvis Presley's first million seller and No 1 was "Heartbreak Hotel" , this was written by Durden/Axton in 1956. This was performed three times on national TV networks. Also "Hound Dog" was written by Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller and also sold a million records and was performed on the Milton Berle show. His performance of HD made him a hero to some and the devil incarnate to others, this performance made him world famous before "All Shook Up" & "Don't be Cruel" ever came into existence. And let's get something straight, Elvis Presley never even met Blackwell, who by the way before Presley hit the big time in 56) was a little known singer song writer. He couldn't hack it as a singer, so he began proffering his songs to Hill & Range the publishing company that handled songs for Elvis Presley. So as the title of this video suggests that Blackwell taught Elvis Presley to sing, it's absolutely ludicrous!😂

With Elvis, it was about "APPRECIATION" not "appropriation" because he grew up in black communities, went to black churches and was immersed in black music from an early age 1. He ended up singing the kind of music he loved and respected. 2. This is how the music business works. When an artist releases a song written by another songwriter, the songwriter is listed on the record and gets PAID by the record company. 3. Elvis did covers of black songs and did songs written by black songwriters. However, some of the companies did not pay the songwriters. That is their fault not Elvis the singer. In 1954, when a young Elvis Presley recorded Arthur Crudup’s “That’s All Right”, Crudup again received national recognition, but still was not receiving royalties. Eventually, Presley would record three of Crudup’s songs; “That’s All Right”, “My Baby Left Me” and “So Glad You’re mine”. 4. Otis gave Elvis his “style”. Including the hiccups, etc Through the demos. That’s right all you haterz. Otis indirectly taught Elvis how to sing Goddammit. That’s right. 💪👊💥🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫

Really? He gave Elvis his style huh? Hmmm, Interesting, because by May of 1956 Elvis was not only a national top-selling star in America, but also an International one. His records were popular & exploding across the ocean on European shores. So, he sure was doing good for himself ..... (*Considering Otis didn't even come along to give him his "style" until 2 months later in July 1956* .... after Elvis had already made his mark). Oh and also Elvis already had those hiccups & vocals in many of his early recordings at Sun Records long before Otis. Researched musicologists have made note of this decades ago. Sorry, he didn't indirectly teach Elvis how to sing. It's odd that when people get on the discussion of Otis Blackwell they sometimes seem to completely ignore the fact he already was singing like that. The people at Shalimar Records and Hill & Range told Otis about this. That's THE WHOLE REASON OTIS started to send his demo to Elvis in the first place. They convinced Otis since he and Elvis had such a similar style, that if Elvis heard some of his demos and decided to record his songs they BOTH would make a lot of money. And as it turned out Otis himself said it happened just like they predicted. By 1957 Otis had $100,000 in royalty payments. (And that was just the first check). But anyway, I know for some of you folks out there when you get on the subject of Otis Blackwell and Elvis, there's a desperate need to believe "Elvis didn't know how to sing like that at all until Otis came along", but honestly it's bad history and just not factual. Gonna have to do better.

🧐 How did he teach Elvis how to sing ?🙄 They have the same range. Did Otis write Good Rockin Tonight?? You don't think Otis might have heard that before he wrote "Don't Be Cruel"?

IF you do your research on the Sun recordings, you'll hear Elvis always sang like that. Thats why Sam Phillips signed him in 55. Long before otis.. Dont let a 7 minute video change 75 years of history.

I believe he did teach Elvis. And he also said he made ALOT OF MONEY off Elvis singing the songs that he wrote. Its the same in 2024...u have Excellent performers who sre extremely popular that people write music for so they can sing and bring the songs to a bigger audience... U still have the artists who do both but those are the taylor swifts etc who make the most money. Elvis Presley was able to bring the songs Otis wrote to an audience if teenagers that he never would have been able to capture. Its the truth...and its because Elvis performs extremely great AND looks like a gotdamm angel face when he was young. To those who are negative about Elvis....dont be so crazy as to think otis music was stolen or any of that BS thats been spread. Otis himself said he got RICH off of writing for Elvis. They were friends. Elvis didnt steal anything. They both had a vision for Elvis and created something extraordinary. Otis made a ton of money and he was happy about it.... atleast those were his words. Eminem wrote ALOT of dr dres best album (imo) chronic 2001 and nobody really gives eminem the credit because dre performs it so well...its his verses . .he bought them from eminem and in turn dre made Eminem famous ...a little like otis and elvis. They really did help each other..from what ive been able to gather...idk because i wasnt born in that era at all so my opinions are based off what ive read about. And my opinion supports both artists...not one over the other... I definitely give Otis credit for creating some of the most iconic music to hit this world...and i give Elvis credit for his iconic performances of those songs
