There will never be an equal to Otis Redding in regard to his vocal style and excellence. No one!

Very nice video. My father was Richard Fraser, and I lost him that day. I had just turned 4 years old, but my brief life with him inspired me in so many ways, not the least of which was to become a pilot myself. It's true that the cause was never fully determined because the plane had been submerged, but based on the investigation reports that I read and the accounts of witnesses, I've felt that the most likely cause was the icing of the engine's carburetors which led to the loss of power. The weather conditions at the time, with temperatures near freezing and flying through very humid air, can cause icing in the carbs which disrupts the proper aspiration of the fuel going into the cylinders for combustion. Be good everyone. Make the most of your time here. You only get one chance.

We love Otis Redding and the Bar Kay's as kids and adults. That music was, and still is wonderful. I still play it to this day. Miss so many that have gone but their music lives on.❤

I saw Otis at Monterey -- many years and many shows later, still the best live performance I've ever seen by far. Your impression from the film of that show is correct -- I was on my feet shouting "Yes Otis, Yes!" and jumping up and down, like everyone was else in the audience. I'll never forget it.

Wow! I bet that was surreal to see live. I always thought just the video performance of Otis Redding at Monterey was the best musical performance I’d ever seen.

I can remember checking out Otis Redding's album "Dictionary of Soul: Complete and Unbelievable" in the stores in 1966, because I saw the pun on Webster's Dictionary and I thought it was clever('Unbelievable' instead of 'Unbridged') and it had song titles I recognized('Day Tripper' and 'Tennessee Waltz') and the rest of the cover was clever parody, too(Otis with a Graduating student mortarboard, and the commonplace Soul trope "My My My" across the bottom) so I thought that Otis had probably been involved with making the cover, which I thought was charming(what did I know, I was 12) and pretty cool. But while the cover songs were OK, when I heard "Try a Little Tenderness," it was "Brick upside the head" time! This was like a documentary about a foreign country, and REALLY interesting. So when I heard about his plane crash, it was in a music magazine a few weeks later, and I thought it was a tragedy, like later, when I heard about the Skynyrd plane crash - I and all my friends were in shock, and it was hard to go back to work, and we ALL felt that "we was robbed." But at the time I, was in an all-male Catholic High School, and most of my friends didn't listen to a lot of musical variety. I still remember being angry that the News didn't report his death because of his race(and his music was unimportant). At the time I lived near Newburgh, NY and our radio and TV all came from New York City, and the popular radio station we listened to was the great ABC radio line-up of the late 1960s. I never was into visiting the sites of the demise of someone I was a fan of, and so I can't imagine traveling to go there. But I recall quite viscerally the shock of hearing about the loss of some of my Musical idols - I'm STILL mad about Tom Petty's loss, except he had a long and hugely fulfilling life. Also, sometimes they hang on long after you might think they'd have died, and then you see them on TV talking about how "reports of my demise are exaggerated." Always glad to hear from you, Otis - take care.

in st Louis we saw "upbeat " on Sunday 11am and I saw that performance and that night heard the sad news. I was really moved by this being in a band that played his music. thanks Mr Gibbs for all the great things you do! and please don't get in one of those little airplanes. how many times has this happened. major airline or van , and sometimes a show just has to be canceled so the entertainers aren't. much love, your Son House cast was phenomenal ❤

Dang it! - I live in Madison Wi, if I’d known you were in town, I would have gone to see you - The Barrymore is a nice venue.. Until recently, I used to live three blocks away from Lake Monona - I used to look out on the lake and think about Otis all the time. Years ago, I gave a little bit of money to go towards constructing an Otis Redding monument on the lakeshore and I was sent a groovy poster copy of his last show at the Factory on W. Gorham St.. The opening act, ironically - was called The Grim Reapers, which contained future members of the band Cheap Trick.. I don’t know if they told you about another pop culture event that occurred in Madison - in 1977, six weeks before his death, Elvis Presley on his way to a gig got out of his limousine to break up a fight at a gas station, using his karate moves - the local papers made a big deal about it, and there actually is a monument about it on the site! Nice video, as always - take care..

Great stuff again, thanks Otis! Had my small transistor radio on my pillow every night as a kid getting in to Dock of the Bay and other tunes of his. Last band I was in we covered his material, it was fulfilling to play and got the crowd going without fail. While a sad ending, it’s great to look back on a gifted talent that brings us music standing the test of time.

Thanks for this one. I've been buying/absorbing music since I was about 10. Money was tight for a preteen kid so I'd bought 45s for a nickel or a dime at garage sales. I fell in love with Otis doing "Try a Little Tenderness". That was the first new record I ever bought. Must have cost at least 75 cents. I was in the dining room doing homework after school when I heard the news. My immediate thought was how horrible it must be to go into frigid icy water in A lake in Wisc in winter. We'd been to Wisc on vacation a couple of years before and I remember a camp we were at where the water was so cold you swam in essentially a metal cage in so you wouldn't go numb and sink..that's how I remember it. Still have some Otis vinyl from back then but mainly listen to him on CD now. Strongly recommend the book "Sweet Soul Music" by Peter Guralnick for an excellent examination of the origins and rise of Southern PostWar soul with a super chapter devoted to Otis.

Hi Otis. There's two great videos I know of. The first issue a 1966 TV studio concert made in Norway with the entire Stack records roadshow. It started with Booker T. and finished with a half-hour set from Otis. The other is a BBC documentary about Otis, Stax, interviews with his wife Zelda, and explored the man, his music, and his talent. There were also interviews with Steve Cropper, and other collaborators during his career. I didn't realized that it was only 1967 when he died. Too young, man. I think the pilot may have misread the altimeter reading or saw the flat surface of the lake mistaking it for the runway. We'll never know. God bless him.

In that era of the 60’s Otis and Aretha were my heroes. I grew up in a small southern town so I used to catch some grief for listening to “soul” music. You got it right when you said that nobody sang like Otis.

Yea his set at Monterey was legendary, we are lucky to have such good footage. Though of course, he was overshadowed by Hendrix, but who wasnt. It is sad, he was on the edge of really breaking through as a huge crossover artist. I had a tape of that set when i was a kid, i wore the hell out of it.
