Peter Case. what can i say...His string of solo records are staggering. What a talent. Take a look if you never have. Got me through hazy days in Los Angeles when I was a lost east coast import. That was 36 years ago, and 3000 miles away, and I have not stopped listening to him.

I remember seeing The Plimsouls quite a few times back in the 1970s-early 1980s; the Starwood, the Whiskey, Cuckoos Nest (Costa Mesa), Golden Bear (Huntington Beach), 49er Tavern (CSULB) among other locations. Still have the 'Zero Hour' EP with the great version of Otis Redding's "Can't Turn You Loose', and the two Plimsouls LP albums. The first LP has the song "Now" he mentions in this interview when talking about Phil Seymour. Also got Peter's first two solo albums on vinyl and CD, I play both of those occasionally. Nice that he's still around, I thought he had some pretty bad medical problems.

I remember the first time I heard "A Million Miles Away." I didn't know the Plimsouls, but I was watching the movie "Valley Girl" and heard that song and I was like, "Wow, this is special." It was a nice movie, but I probably would have forgotten about it long ago if not for that song.

Yep - mainstays at all my old haunts - The Starwood, The Palomino, Madame Wong's, Perkins Playhouse, and of course the late, lamented Bear - down the 405 south in HB. But even if the 'souls weren't on a bill somewhere on a given night , there was all manner of legendary talent holding court in their place - X, The Blasters. Top Jimmy and The Rhythm Pigs, The Minutemen, Black Flag, Los Lobos, The Dickies, The Weirdos - and a little later the Textones, True West, and the rest of the Paisley Underground - the Dream Syndicate, Long Ryders, Three O'Clock, Rain Parade. Scarcely even seems real to me anymore - though I was in the audience on more nights than I can count.

I loved the Plimsouls too. The last time I saw Peter Case I think it was at a club called Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco, maybe the early 90's. The last thing I remember was the drummer (I'm pretty sure it was Clem Burke from Blondie) said "We'll be back!" and I remember thinking Yeah! Something to look forward too! I'm pretty sure the encore was "A Million Miles Away" and the band even did a Blondie song. It was a Rockin' show in support of a solo album. This was more than a few years back so I could be misremembering but I remember it rocked. Nothing quite like being there for a good band in a smaller club.

If you're thinking of 'Hangin' on the Telephone' - that weren't no Blondie song you were hearing. Jack Lee - Peter's songwriting partner in the Nerves (along with Paul Collins) penned that one - as well as 'Come Back and Stay' which later became a mega hit for Paul Young. Clem sat in for the sessions of the Plimsouls reunion album 'Cool Trash' of that era around '97 and toured to promote it for at least a year I believe

@williamneillgross3926 Yeah - listening to Peter spin some yarn or other about his travails in the industry is always such a mixed bag for me emotionally. Even 45 years later. There’s never any shortage of self sabotage and missed opportunities - and it pains me that life hasn’t led a shining light like him down an easier road. But to the great relief of many who have revered his troubadour’s heart for decades, he’s always pressed on . And Pete wouldn’t be Pete if it ever stopped being about having another tale to tell. He’d doubtless roll his eyes and scoff to hear it but he’s right up there in the firmament alongside Prine, Richard Thompson and Dylan himself in my book.

Cool stories about Petty and Dwight Twilley. Perer Case is another one of those great songwriters like Chris Bell. Like you either know about or you don't. They were kind of cult status like The Replacements when I moved to LA in 84.

I sure remember the Plimsouls, they were kind of kings of the Hollywood, Power Pop verging on Americana scene when I moved back to L.A. in 1986 from the Bay Area. They had already had a Million Miles Away as a big hit a few years before that…I liked them but by 86 it seemed they were in disarray or something..it was a great era in L.A. or maybe near the end of it! It had transitioned to hair metal by then too…different scene of course. Great hearing Peters stories.

I was upstairs at the Whiskey that night. A friend worked for ZOX Studios that designed the Album cover. I have the promo album marked "not for sale" and two ticket stubs from that night. I think it was 4.50 to get in. Maybe 5.50.

The Plimsouls were hired to play my high school homecoming dance in 1983, but they canceled for some reason. I like to think they were shooting Valley Girl instead. Got to see Peter Case play solo a lot during college, though.

A couple of weeks ago I attended a book signing at Leon's/Shelter Church Studio in Tulsa. Afterwards, I went across the street to the Ranch House Diner (currently the Freeway Cafe) where Tom Petty and Mudcrutch signed with Shelter. The story is that they were on the were moving to L.A. to sign with London records, but Denny Cordell talked them into stopping at the Church on their way. They spent a day recording and ended up signing with Denny. As far as I know, that was the last time Tom, was at the Church. Ironically, Dwight Twilley and Phil Seymour signed with Shelter in LA and where sent back to Tulsa. Leon basically gave them the keys and full reign alone at the Church.

I saw Tom Petty a couple of more times than the Plimsouls. But the Plimsouls broke up. The Heartbreakers never did. I wish they had stayed together.

Spent two days with Peter Case a few years ago while he was touring. 3 gigs in three nights. If there's such a thing as a songwriters songwriter then Peter is right up there with the best of them. Great stories, excellent guy to be around and one of the best you'll ever see live. If you don't have Peter Case albums in your collection you don't have a collection!

I did an interview with him in 1987, when I was a college student. Such a cool, funny guy. When a couple got up to get beers, he came really close to swapping our lackluster pizza for theirs. (He pretty much got caught when they returned too quickly.) When we talked about songwriting, he said the best ideas come to him while he's asleep and he's learned to get up and write them down because if he doesn't, God takes them away and gives them to Alex Chilton.
